  • Heavy, Handsome, and Fast: My Honest Take on the Acer Nitro V
Capacity: Ryzen 5 240 | 16GB+512GB Style: RTX 5060
My desk setup got a serious upgrade the day this Acer Nitro V arrived. The matte black chassis with orange backlit keys looks genuinely sharp — the orange really pops against the black — and unlike a lot of gaming laptops that feel plasticky and cheap, this one has a reassuring heft and rigidity to it; it feels well built throughout. Yes, it's on the heavier side, which is worth knowing before you commit to hauling it in a backpack daily, but for a desktop-replacement machine, the tradeoff makes sense given what you're getting under the hood. Under the hood is an AMD Ryzen 5 240 processor with 6 cores and 12 threads, more than enough for intense multitasking, streaming, and gaming, plus an integrated NPU rated at 50 TOPS that positions this as a laptop built for the future of intelligent computing, not just gaming. Graphics come from the next-gen RTX 5060, powered by NVIDIA's Blackwell architecture, which delivers a massive leap in performance thanks to DLSS 4 and ray tracing support. The 17.3" display is a big part of what makes this feel like a real desktop replacement: a Full HD (1920x1080) IPS panel with an ultra-fast 180Hz refresh rate and 3ms response time, which makes for fluid, tear-free gameplay and a real competitive edge in fast-paced games. Paired with 16GB of high-speed DDR5 RAM and a 512GB PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD, the system stays responsive even with a lot going on, and boot times are lightning fast — I clocked it at 16 seconds from power-on to login screen. The high-bandwidth memory setup is ideal for both heavy gaming and content creation. Even with all of this, battery life remains good. Typing and everyday use is a genuine pleasure here. It's a full-size keyboard with a number pad, and the keys are quiet with good tactile feedback — no mushy or clacky feel. The touchpad is large and comfortable, mouse clicks are quiet too, and the whole input experience feels premium for a gaming laptop. Sound quality is also better than I expected for a laptop this size. Rounding out the hardware, you get a built-in webcam and a 3-mic array, both solid for calls and streaming. Connectivity is genuinely future-proofed: USB4, HDMI 2.1, and Wi-Fi 6E cover pretty much everything a modern desktop-replacement setup demands, whether you're docking to external monitors or need a fast, stable wireless connection. Cooling is handled by a dual-fan system with a quad-exhaust design, which keeps things running smoothly even under sustained load. A couple of small things worth flagging. The charger has no LED indicator, so there's no visual confirmation it's actually plugged in and charging — a minor but slightly annoying oversight. And the included Planet 9 software is set to be discontinued by the end of 2026, and honestly, it already seems non-functional as of now, so I just uninstalled it entirely — save yourself the confusion and do the same. Overall, this is a beautiful laptop with a genuinely nice design, and it delivers strong performance across the board. ... show more

  • Budget friendly gaming laptop that leaves you wanting more.
Capacity: Ryzen 5 240 | 16GB+512GB Style: RTX 5060
I really wanted to like this Acer Nitro V budget-friendly gaming laptop. While I understand that current RAM and GPU prices constrain what manufacturers can offer at this price point, Acer still could have done better with quality control and basic features. Out of the box, setup was rough. On initial boot, the laptop took nearly 5 minutes just to turn on (despite having an 80% battery charge). Immediately after finishing the Windows setup, the system crashed and spent 30 minutes in startup repair—a red flag for a brand-new device that raises concerns about long-term reliability. On the positive side, performance since that initial hiccup has been solid. It runs cool, battery life is decent, the screen quality is fair, and gaming performance is respectable for a budget PC. However, it cuts too many cheap corners: Keyboard: The backlight is locked to a single orange color with no customizable options. Numpad: The number pad is awkwardly cramped and tight to use. Biometrics: There is no fingerprint reader or Windows Hello support for fast logins. Chassis: The outer shell is a massive fingerprint magnet that desperately needs an oleophobic coating. Overall, the core performance is fine, but the early system crashes and lack of basic quality-of-life features make it hard to recommend wholeheartedly. ... show more

  • Great Gaming Laptop Option
Capacity: Ryzen 5 240 | 16GB+512GB Style: RTX 5060
The Acer Nitro V 17 Ai Gaming Laptop tries to be a more affordable alternative to the likes of Alienware. It offers a traditional desktop replacement 17in laptop chassis designed specifically with gaming in mind. Out of box: The laptop shipped in a basic brown box and included a barrel charger and simple documentation. The Windows setup process was mostly standard, except there was an option to register your PC for warranty support and create an AcerID in the process. Since my laptop was manufactured about a year ago, a good bit of time was spent grabbing updates. Build Quality: This Acer is fairly large and heavy, though on par with most other 17in laptops. The build is plastic, but is put together better than I expected. That said, it still isn’t going to seem as nice as metal laptops or other higher end plastic laptops. You can open the screen/hinge with one hand, which is a nice attention to detail. The outer finish looks slick, but seems like it’ll attract and show fingerprints and other dirt easily. IO/Expandability/Serviceability: This laptop includes several USB-A ports, one USB-C (with display and charging capabilities), one HDMI, a microSD card slot, a 3.5mm headphone/microphone combo jack, and a barrel-style power plug. To clean or upgrade this laptop requires unscrewing ten Philips head bolts and prying somewhat sharp plastic; less than ideal. That said, once you pry off the underside cover you do have easy access to the SSD, RAM, and battery. This laptop does not have a lot of room to expand. There is one M.2 drive slot (occupied), and two SODIMM RAM slots (one in use, one free). The wireless card is also user replaceable. Screen: Better looking than the specs would make you believe. 1080p resolution (more than sharp enough for portable gaming) and a high 180hz refresh rate. It has decent color reproduction without being too noticeably deficient in any one color. Brightness is acceptable indoors, but a bit more brightness would be appreciated to fight glare. As expected for an IPS panel, this has very good viewing angles. This is not a HDR or Quantum dot or OLED display, so certain content can look dull comparatively. One issue with my unit is that there is a little bit of backlight bleed on the bottom right of the display. This is only noticeable with dark backgrounds. Keyboard/Touchpad: The membrane keyboard is sized well and has a decent layout. The typing experience is similar to most laptop keyboards I’ve used, with somewhat reduced key travel and a tactile feel. It is also backlight in a single slightly orange color. The touchpad is massive and perfectly responsive. Audio: This laptop comes with two speakers and DTS software enhancements. Volume was sufficient, though some content could have used a bit more headroom. Audio quality wasn’t too impressive with or without the DTS audio enhancements. Weirdly, DTS enhancements didn’t do much in this application when I’ve seen them do wonders for other laptops. A lot of the speaker issues could be due to the bottom firing placement of the drivers, but it still gets the job done either way. Headphone audio quality is good through the analog headphone jack. Software: No issues with having all required drivers installed and the computer being configured to fully utilize its hardware within the UEFI (BIOS). This Acer comes equipped with quite a bit of bloatware, some of which caused error messages to appear. Most of this added software I ended up removing expect for Nitro Sense which allows you monitor your CPU and GPU temperatures, as well as adjust fan speed and power plan settings (dedicated button for this). Performance: This computer is well spec’d for 1080p gaming. During my gaming sessions, hardware utilization among the processor, RAM, and graphics card were pretty even with each other. On Turbo mode (plugged in), It was easy to run games like BeamNG on full Ultra settings at around 60fps. 1440p gaming on another monitor brings this down to about 30fps. The laptop cooling worked well and kept the computer at a comfortable temperature. The fans can get somewhat loud on Turbo mode, but their noise wasn’t too bothersome when wearing headphones or using the speakers. Battery Life: On balanced or performance modes, 2-4 hours seems to be expected. Eco mode brings this up to 6-8 hours. Acer rates this can technically get up to 10 hours of usage, but it didn’t seem realistic in my opinion. Overall, this is a great option for a slightly more affordable 17in gaming laptop and one I ended up liking a lot more than I initially expected. Rating 4 stars due to the bloatware, serviceability, and lack of expansion slots. ... show more

  • Excellent build quality and still quiet
Capacity: Ryzen 5 240 | 16GB+512GB Style: RTX 5060
I try not to spoil my thought process by looking up what others have to say about a product, but when I saw the specs and the price on this, I thought it sounded just way too good to be real. I did a quick search and got the gist of how this company is related to another and how they keep their prices low. That was probably a month or so ago at this point, but I'll start by addressing the few basic concerns. One of the points I saw was that the display on these is good, but not "super premium". OK, I can see that. Had I not read that, I probably would not have noticed, but on a pitch black screen, you can see some minor lighting (white-ish spots) around the four corners where the backlighting must be. You barely see it on colored screens. Really a non-issue in my opinion, and obviously not at all if you use an external monitor. It's 1080p, so no chance of dropped frames with this hardware, and you can't really justify a higher resolution when sitting as close as you normally would to a laptop, so I think this screen specs/design is just right unless you really want to throw money away. They must have made some inroads on their fans and loudness factor over other models. You can hear fans kick on quietly sometimes, which isn't something you get with "Internet browsing-only" machines, but when gaming at full power, it's going to happen. The packaging claims to have addressed this, and though it is my first Acer, I'm guessing they did, because there is no obnoxious noise here. I gather they use hardcore, but just slightly older hardware to create the value you get with this machine. With a processor PassMark score closing in on 30,000 beside a discrete GPU, I can't find a way to bog this thing down. Another reviewer had mentioned having general issues with the computer freezing. I have not had issues with this at all (it's been about a month), but with another brand that is sort of related (but not really), I started having major issues long into owning it. I simply removed all the crapware that came with the machine associated with the brand, and it lent new life to my machine immediately, and included the battery having more life (or being read correctly by the computer). I normally always take that type of software off (you know, the kind that does the same stuff that Windows does natively, but always seems to cause problems) but I didn't for that computer because I wanted the keyboard backlights to work, so eventually I did the workaround of adding the open source OpenRGB software, and it cleared everything right up. I am fully prepared to do that with this computer as well the moment I sense I'm having any issues whatsoever. And I may want to do that anyway, because I have found one reason for annoyance with this laptop: the backlit display stays on always or a set amount of time since your last key press, but does NOT stay on when you're moving the mouse, so I find that pretty annoying, because I want it on when I move the mouse so my first press is easy to see. Why they'd have that extra software and not provide more options, I have no idea. But I suspect this can be tailored to my needs in OpenRGB. Oh, the build quality was the last thing I remember some people saying was lesser on other machines. I don't see that as an issue at all. I'm very impressed with its looks and feel from the moment I opened the box. I took the approach this review of stomping out the potential negatives rather than looking specifically at the positives, and I hope that will convince you it's a fantastic machine worth looking at more closely. Especially considering todays elevated hardware prices, the value here seems pretty excellent. ... show more

It's fine when it is working, graphics are great, speed is adequate. But after 2 months it has begun freezing EVERY day. Sometimes it lets me restart on my own, other times it crashes completely. It is beyond frustrating and I am honestly so mad.

  • Solid Gaming Performance, but Not Out of The Box
Capacity: Ryzen 5 240 | 16GB+512GB Style: RTX 5060
The device itself has a rather large footprint, which is expected with a 17.3-inch laptop. The CPU and GPU are well ventilated and, as long as it's on a flat surface, doesn't have any issues with overheating. The power brick is standard and similar to other modern laptops I have used. It is rather small and is easily stored in a laptop bag. The operating system was a major hassle. Windows 11 kept asking me to sign up for an account, even though I was setting it up without internet access, so getting said account was impossible. It left me in a situation where I simply wasn't able to proceed with setup. I did eventually talk to a friend who advised me on how to bypass the requirement, but it took some technical know-how to do it and I was able to get it set up without starting a Microsoft account. It was not easy at all, though. The screen quality is excellent for a 1080p screen. The refresh rate is locked down at 60 Hz out of the box, so I did have to go into Windows to adjust it so it would run at 185 Hz. Games, such as Hearthstone, had great frame rates when they ran. Running games on the device was also a hassle at first. I loaded Hearthstone, which is a very lightweight game, to see how it would play. Upon starting the game, the computer completely crashed and restarted. Once it had restarted, I tried loading up the game again and again, and it lept crashing. I eventually checked all the drivers and got them updated with the latest versions, which took about 90 minutes. I once more loaded Hearthstone, and once again, the machine crashed completely. I went through all the included software that came prebundled on the machine. There was quite a lot of bloatware, so I ended up removing all of it. Once I did that and restarted the laptop, I loaded Hearthstone one more time, and the game did play. When it first started, though, there was a significant amount of hitching and frame rate drops. The GPU seemed to be having trouble loading up textures, so I gave it a few minutes to do that and once it did, the game played just fine, with high frame rates. The keyboard is alright. It's not the best one I have used on a laptop, but the backlighting definitely helps with low-light situations. The button presses feel fairly good and not too squishy. The speakers sound somewhat tinny, as if the music and game sounds are being filtered through a tunnel. When I connected my Bluetooth headphones to the laptop, which was thankfully easy, the sound worked just fine and it sounded far better. CPU performance is limited. I checked the included 16 GBs of DRAM and saw that it was just a single stick, working in single-channel mode at 5600 MT/s per second. That significantly limited performance. When tested using Cinebench, the scores were not at all what I expected, performing lower than what I had anticipated. I did notice the computer automatically downclocks the CPU when it is running on battery power, which is fine. On battery only, the CPU maxes itself at about 4 GHz. When plugged in, it does hit the advertised clock speed of 5.3 GHz. However, even when plugged in, the CPU still underperformed. The SSD does work well and I was getting over 5000 MB/s read and write speeds. The battery life is pretty good when using it just to watch videos or browse the web, lasting several hours. When gaming, it was significantly lower, which was expected, lasting about 2 hours. While this machine can be made to be decent, there are too many problems with it out of the box. If I didn't have the knowledge I do with computers, this might have ended up being returned because of the constant crashes when trying to play a game. Given the middling performance, though, I don't feel the value is there, not for the performance you get and the problems you will have to deal with. To their credit, Acer does include documentation for the machine and a place to reach out if you have issues, so that can be helpful. ... show more

  • Solid gaming laptop at a good price, with room for extra RAM and a second SSD
Capacity: Ryzen 5 240 | 16GB+512GB Style: RTX 5060
Update: I feel like I had to come back and remove a star. Given the lack of biometrics sensors on this device, the login PIN really should work flawlessly, and on all my other devices it does. And yet since owning this laptop for six weeks, three times I have received the message "Something happened and your PIN isn't available". This is after installing all Windows Updates, so it shouldn't be caused by outdated drivers. That's just not acceptable. Worse, hoping to fix this with optional updates in Windows Update (some firmware updates are hidden there) and running those, I was confronted with the Bitlocker Recovery screen on reboot. Tip: make sure you save your bitlocker keys to your MS Account (I think this is done by default), because otherwise you could find yourself losing all your data. Not great. I keep it at four stars because it still works and I enjoy the performance, but I don't recall having this many niggles with a new system since .. Windows Vista? Since forever basically. _____ Original review: Given the current high cost of RAM and SSD storage, building a gaming system has become expensive. With the ANV17-41-R8ML Acer has put together a solid gaming laptop for a decent price at $1200. This particular model gives you 512GB of SSD space and 16GB RAM, with a well-matched AMD Ryzen 5 240 CPU and an RTX 5060 NVIDIA GPU. I'm not a hard-core gamer so I can't provide detailed performance metrics, but I am impressed with the ease at which the system runs Half-life Alyx VR over virtual desktop to the Quest 3. What an awesome experience! It all runs smoothly, with acceptable fan noise levels. Be sure to complete all windows updates and firmware updates before judging the performance, because those may contain important fixes and improvements. One great thing is how easy it is to upgrade the RAM and storage. The plastic bottom shell of the laptop is held in place with only standard Philips head screws, so it's easy to get to the internals. After removing all screws the shell is still held in place with plastic clips. It did feel a bit scary to pop the shell off one clip at a time, but everything survived fine. It has a SODIMM expansion slot, so I added 16GB DDR5 module for $200 which doubled the RAM. The added RAM was recognized and ready for use after a single reboot. The first boot after the upgrade took longer than usual (don't panic..) supposedly for an initial RAM testing cycle. It also has a second SSD slot, so it's very easy to add more storage without having to image the OS drive. I popped in a spare 1TB SSD that I happened to have, and it was also recognized immediately, no need to configure anything. Closing it up the shell snapped back into place easily. Below I have listed some of the pros and cons. To really make up your mind look at some benchmarks (I read that it performs well, but that it is tuned to be a bit conservative in power use. Upside: controlled thermals, steady performance) and read up on the display (apparently the color accuracy is modest for some of Acer's panels, not sure if that applies here). Positives: - fast CPU and GPU, fast Wifi module - decent amount of RAM at 16GB - strong fan with a pleasant whoosh sound, no annoying whine here - quite thin for a gaming laptop - easy to upgrade RAM and storage, see description above and labeled picture of the internals - nice large display with wide viewing angles and a matte coating, so glare is not an issue - 180Hz display, a very fast refresh rate that should be useful for fast games - good selection of ports, with 3xUSB3, 3.5mm audio, microSD, 1xUSB4, HDMI2.1, Ethernet - gamer looks, but nothing too outrageous, cool colored logo on the metallic (?) lid - cool orange keyboard backlight (no RGB here) with reasonably quiet keys - full size cursor keys with sensible placement Some negatives or points to note: - no touchscreen - no biometric login (no Windows hello camera or fingerprint reader) so I'm using a PIN for quick login - the large display is only 1080p, so people with sharp eyes will notice pixels - the screen has decent but not great brightness. It's fine for indoor use, see pictures - heavy, but not overly so for a gaming laptop - on mine the right-click position on the touch pad requires a pretty strong push and the click is a bit loud - only a single USB-C port, and it's in the back - power plug connects at the back - fingerprints do show on the lid, but they're fairly easy to wipe off, see before and after picture - all-plastic bottom shell - no privacy shutter I still rate this system five stars, not because it's perfect, but because basically all the cons are simply design choices to keep the cost down, except for maybe the trackpad which I don't love. It's performed perfectly so far, and overall I'm very happy with this system. ... show more
