  • Great gaming laptop that packs the punch of a $1000 laptop for under $800
Style: Old i5-7300 Obsolete
General Overall Review Before In Depth Review Pros: *Powerful graphics card at a cheap price *Decent processor will get everything you need done fast *Comes with a SSD over a standard HDd *1080p resolution to watch Full HD content *Backlit keyboard to operate in the darkness *Not too heavy *Has a nice exterior design *Computer distributes heat well and fans keep it cool *Can expand hard drive storage with HDD or SSD Cons: *Plastic material can make it feel cheap *Fans get loud when playing graphic intense games *Battery life is mediocre but if you use it as a gaming desktop alternative you'll keep the power plugged in *250GB storage (I won't say it's a con exactly because of the price and because its a SSD. But if it was a 250GB HDD then I would list it as a con) I paid $699 for this laptop. And for the price I paid I'm thoroughly impressed. This computer performs like that of a $800-$1000 computer. Has enough RAM to execute all your programs, 1080p screen, a decent i5 processor and a pretty powerful graphics card for the price. Everyone always worries about needing an i7 processor for gaming but in reality if your graphics card is insufficient having a powerful processor will not compensate for a mediocre graphics card. What people don't realize is an i5 is more than sufficient to game if you have a great graphics card. In comparison to my i7 Lenovo there's really not much difference in performance rather the difference lies in the graphics card. About 4 years ago I paid $1100 for my Lenovo Y50 which had a NVIDIA GTX 860M and an i7 processor. And because it broke I was looking around for a replacement. I was not really expecting much in regards to the graphics card especially because how cheap the laptop was. But surprisingly not only does it perform just as well as my previous laptop, it performs much better (new graphic card architecture and technology) at almost half the cost. At the time the 860m (the graphics card in my previous laptop the Lenovo Y50) was a mid range graphics card for laptops. But back then the laptop version of graphics card (m) was not on par with it's desktop counterpart and in most cases only performed about 40-70% of what it's counterpart could do. But now with the new architecture and technology the laptop counterpart performs at 75-90% of it's desktop counterpart. The NVIDIA GTX 1050TI although a mid range card performs so much better than mid range cards back in the day. On a side note, if you plan on ordering this laptop make sure that it's the 1050 TI version and not just the plain 1050. The TI version packs a bit more of a punch which does make a difference. Because some people have complained and rated the laptop poorly because they received a 1050 version and not the 1050TI. My only complaint is, the plastic material in which the chassis is made of vs the metal finish of my previous laptop. The plastic makes it feel cheap (well it is) but obviously it's more of an aesthetics issue than a performance one. Some people complained about the hard drive space being insufficient. To be honest if you're using this computer for anything but gaming the space will be more than sufficient. But if you plan on using it for gaming then the space will run out quickly, but for the price you're paying it's still a steal. Sure it's not a 1TB drive like a lot of standard laptops nowadays but because it's a SSD it will increase the overall speed and performance of your computer unlikes it's HDD counterpart. There is an extra hard drive slot so you can always expand the hard drive with a standard hdd if you're on a budget and need extra space or a 2.5 m sata II SSD if you want extra space with the continued faster performance. If you wish to add another hard drive you have to call Acer and request for an hard drive expansion kit, which they will provide to you free of charge (once you provide them with the laptop's information). Aside from that the only other con is it can be loud sometimes when playing graphic intense games but can be remedied by wearing head phones. The fans although loud does keep the laptop cool despite the plastic chassis. Overall this laptop is a great purchase. lt packs a powerful punch for the price it goes for and looks nice as well. ... show more

  • Great Mixed Reality Travel Laptop
Style: Old i5-7300 Obsolete
I hope everyone had a great holiday and this is one of my 2017 Holiday gifts to myself. As for background please check out some of my reviews I enjoy tech and have reviewed several types of systems. I brought this system for one purpose to match it with my Samsung Odyssey VR Headset for Windows mixed reality. From a price standpoint you would be hard pressed to find another Gamming Laptop in this price range with these features. I searched the net and the pricing was the best here on Amazon. I set up the laptop with the Samsung headset on Christmas and it passed all the test with flying colors I used it most so far to play Space Pirates an excellent VR game. I also have installed Star Trek Bridge Crew and Arizona Sunshine for non VR I have the Division on it running at full 60FPS. The laptop allows my VR to run at the full 90hrz on all my VR Games I can confirm mine does have the 1050TI not the 1050. The Laptop came with no bloat wear and was easy to setup by voice. I am certain the one I got has the drive holder for me to add an additional drive to the system I did not get it to use it on battery power for any long periods of time I understand these laptop are not made to game for hours on end with just battery power Even with the speakers faced down I still get great sound from them and the screen being matt is a pleasure glossy screens are to me over rated. Start up time is very fast and if you want to really use this laptop you will need an additional drive the included 256Gigs will fill up fast. This is I think one of if not the best first Gamming Laptop you can get and still be under $1000.00 If you have the cash and can afford a $1000.00+ machine then go for it but for me this hit a very nice sweet spot and it means I can take my VR on the road to let friends play with it. ... show more

  • Best budget gaming laptop on the market with the 1050Ti
Style: Old i5-7300 Obsolete
I want to say that Acer has done extremely well in marketing what is essentially a mid-range gaming computer for a very good price point indeed. Including shipping, I was able to get this machine for about $725 all told, which is an excellent for a computer with a quad core i5 and a 1050Ti; other machines with identical specifications retail for upwards of 900 dollars. I have yet to be disappointed; I've thrown almost all of the best games I have, including Gaijn's War-Thunder (2013) and Idea Factory's Cyberdimension Neptunia (2017) at this computer, and it handles them almost flawlessly at 1080p on maximum settings; in Cyberdimension Neptunia, which uses the Unreal 4 engine, there are a few hiccups down to 57fps when new effects come into play, but otherwise the system holds stead with barely any noticeable noise or heat; Warthunder never drops below about 77FPS. This is the machine you want if you want a budget gaming laptop that truly lives up to the advertising hype; the Nvidia GTX 1050Ti will be able to handle most items coming out within the next few years on medium-high settings at 1080p for at least the next 3-5 years. With that said, the computer gets four rather than five stars for a couple of reasons. First, because while the chassis is solid and well made, the IPS screen itself is a bit dim, and the plastic frame for it feels a bit fragile; it's certainly not made of as durable a material as the actual chassis. Second, because the audio seems a bit off; while this is a function of the extra subwoofer/ bass settings they seem to have added to the audio card, it makes the audio a bit less clear than on my older computer, an HP Envy 17 S143CL model, which was purchased for $800 in December 2016. ... show more

  • Runs Great
Style: Old i5-7300 Obsolete
I've waited a few months to write an honest review so here it is. I purchased this laptop because I wanted a 15 inch screen and a laptop that was capable of gaming. It doesn't feel too cheap and i don't thinks its terribly ugly, I mean its 650$ you got to give and take. The computer is fast, the keyboard is nice, Track pad is decent enough, back lit keys are nice, battery is good. If you game at all you'll want to be plugged in. The screen does flex if you use two hands trying to flex it but no issues. My only real gripe with this computer is the screen could be brighter. It actually ran the dell VR headset just fine, hasn't over heated either. I still think using a real desktop is a better choice for any gaming but this laptop can run them just fine if need be. At it's price point its the go to computer, Time to time its get brought into the workshop where we search up part numbers or info for whatever were working on with greasy dirty hands and so on, I mean at 650$ im not too worried about it, for the minimal traveling i do, its the laptop that comes on the trip. Zero wear on it so far and looks like the day i got it minus the finger prints. Now the plastic body does show finger prints regardless if its actual grease or just oils from your skin. Easy enough to wipe off if it bothers you. If you're looking for a computer to do school work, surf the web, youtube, or occasionally game i would definitely consider this computer. If you want a hardcore gaming machine go buy a desktop. I do wish the screen was as nice as my older 2011 13 inch macbook though. All that said i would buy it again, for 650$ its got some great hardware, the 1050ti is solid gaming card capable of playing 90 percent of the games out there, paired with decent amount of ram+ ssd hard drive make this laptop very pleasant to use. Thought i would be adding more ram but have yet feel the need to do so, I have an extra ssd laying around that 1 day i will get around to installing but so far so good. ... show more

  • - Fantastic value for the cost
Style: Old i5-7300 Obsolete
Having had this unit for several months now, here are my impressions: - Fantastic value for the cost. Build quality is solid, while the entire unit is plastic it avoids feeling cheap like other laptops can - Excellent gaming performance. No, its not an uber-powerful desktop, and no, it wont unseat a top-of-the-line Razer Blade Pro, but it will play modern games at medium-high settings with a solid frame rate. More than powerful enough for casual gaming - Surprisingly good sound quality - Surprisingly quiet cooling Overall ive loved this laptop. It gets the job done and done well, and is priced extremely competitively. As mentioned, modern games like Destiny 2 can be played at 60fps on medium settings, hardly a powerhouse but plenty for casual gaming. The keyboard is nothing to write home about, ditto the screen, but they get the job done with no fuss, which is really all you need most of the time. Battery life is OK, but nothing to write home about. Casual use gets about 6 hours, though while gaming that number drops hard. No 12+ hour life here, you want that go shell out for something without a dedicated graphics card. There are a few negatives though; - Fingerprint magnet. The finish on the lid and around the keyboard shows every possible mark. - Connectivity. Not horrible, but you are limited to 3 USB 3.0 ports, and while there is a USB-c port, its not the latest standard that would allow you to power the laptop or connect a monitor (that i know of). The headphone jack is a combined headphone/mic port. Hardly a deal breaker, but i still wouldve like to have a seperate mic port. Puzzlingly, there is an SD card slot, i cant help but thing that space would be better used for more USB ports, or at least the aforementioned mic jack. Theres a few other smaller issues as well. The keyboard, for example, is fully backlit, but controls are limited to on and off, with no user control. The backlight is on at all times with the laptop plugged in, and shuts off after 5 seconds of inactivity without the charger connected. There are no other options, unfortunately, like it or leave. The trackpad is another point of contention, it works extremely well and is plenty sensitive, but the bottom edge is extremely close to the edges of both the keyboard and the unit. Accidental mouse movements are abundant, particularly in gaming unless you disable the trackpad Overall though, the good outweighs the bad by a fair margin on this. If youre looking for a relatively inexpensive laptop with a dedicated GPU that can handle relatively modern games, look no further. Just remember that this is an $800 laptop, it wont compete with a $2000 Razer, or even a gaming desktop ... show more

  • Gamer Lite - Superb Hardware
Style: Old i5-7300 Obsolete
This is an excellent laptop for gaming, basic productivity, or even some coding for a Comp Sci/Technology student. It has a bright, somewhat color-accurate IPS display, a nicely spaced, back-lit keyboard with very quiet keys for typing, and of course the beasty combination of a 7th gen Core i5 processor, a GTX 1050 Ti GPU, and 8 GB of RAM to keep it all humming nicely. This is of course considered and "entry level" platform for a serious PC gamer, but this isn't really for a serious PC gamer is it? Just for reference I am coming from a Lenovo IdeaPad y410p with an intel i7-4700MQ processor, a GT 755M GPU and also 8 GB of RAM, and that is a really nice mid-tier gaming laptop from about 5 years back and a great machine. Though the cheaper i5 included with this machine is still outstripped, power-wise, by my 5 year old i7 (with hyper-threading) the overall build of this budget acer gaming PC absolutely destroys everything else on the Lenovo performance-wise. The newer i5 is neck and neck with the i7, but the "budget" GTX 1050 Ti with 4 GB of VRAM (vs. the GT755M 2 GB VRAM) and 256 GB SSD make a gigantic difference in how games load and play. Why do I call this "Gamer Lite"? Well because this laptop really only comes with the bare minimum required for a PC gamer. You only get a 256 GB SSD, and 8 GB of RAM. The real excellent upgrade is the GTX 1050 Ti GPU, which is freakin stellar for a PC priced under $1000 USD. Basically, you get everything you need to run most AAA titles at High settings, ON A LAPTOP THAT COSTS $750 USD! 256 GB isn't gonna give you a lot of space for a huge library (obviously) but the fact that it is solid state makes it so quick. Win 10 boots in seconds. Steam opens literally instantly. Instantly! Not exaggerating. Kiss those long load times goodbye. I did a lot of research before I decided on this laptop, and there are a few reviewers (YouTube and website reviews) out there talking a lot about heat. It is true, this particular laptop doesn't have the best design for cooling, but it is totally fine for normal use. I mean if you want to run a AAA title on Ultra settings for several hours then yeah, your CPU and GPU are gonna get hot and start to degrade. But this thing isn't for that. That's what a maxed out gaming tower with 10 fans and liquid cooling is for. Go buy that if that's what you want to do. I've seen external heat tests on this thing that look totally in line with what you would want from a performance laptop. If it gets hot then that means its time to go outside and talk to people LOL. Honestly, great value for an excellent setup. Not the best. Not even by far the worst. At this price point your options are quite limited but this is really the best bang for your buck. And also, pretty nice to use just as a PC. ... show more

  • Customer Service is a nightmare
Style: Old i5-7300 Obsolete
Honestly, the laptop is not too bad, but I want to bring to light the worse customer service experience of my entire life and why I do not recommend Acer products. I was using my laptop just fine when 4 months in from buying the laptop, the battery in my laptop stopped working and would not charge anymore. I think okay, Im just going to take this to my local repair shop and get this fixed ina couple days maximum. I go there and they ask me if I have a warranty with Acer. I look up and see that the laptop does have a 1 year warranty with Acer, and the representative tells me that they are not allowed to repair acer laptops under warranty (that is right, it is literally bad that the laptop is under warranty). I proceed to call acer customer support who ask me to ship my laptop and charger across the country to Texas because it is THE ONLY ACER REPAIR SERVICE CENTER IN THE WHOLE ENTIRE USA. Not only that, but I had to pay $50 just to ship my laptop UNDER WARRANTY to the Texas repair center. My laptop was gone for two weeks counting the shipping and time spent in the repair center which is already a ridiculously long time for a repair to be made. But it gets EVEN WORSE. I receive my laptop after two weeks and when I open the box my laptop screen was cracked and no charger was included. I am pissed at this point and rightfully so, acer stole my charger and returned the laptop with a whole new problem. I call acer repair center and this time after 30 minutes of complaining The lady tells me she wants me to ship my laptop back to the texas repair center. She tells me they will fix my laptop screen and send a charger back with it. Luckily this time they sent me a shipping label so I did not have to drop another $50 for acers incompetence to fulfill a repair, but I was never refunded the initial $50 which guarantees I will never buy another product from Acer again. Between the time the laptop had been sent the second time, I called the repair center again to make sure they get the order correct because my trust in Acer to send me back my laptop in one piece with my charger is at 0 at this point and they tell me I have nothing to worry about (lol) I get my laptop back after another two weeks and the laptop seems to be in repaired fully now but I still did not get my charger returned to me. On the service order sheet that came back with the laptop says that a charger was supposed to be sent to me but of course there is no charger. I call acer repair center again (now the fifth time I have called the repair center) and give the acer representative a mouthful. He tells me he will send the charger fro texas to me. I ask how long that will take and he says 3-8 business days. I told him that I had not have my laptop for a month and he wants me to wait 5 days for acer to lazily send me a charger because they cannot fulfill an order. After pulling some teeth he finally says that he will expedite the charger in two days. Which is nice but should not have been needed in the first place nor should I had to argue to get that. Why do I have to send my laptop across the country to get it fixed? Why did I have to pay for my laptop to be sent to the repair center if it is on warranty? Why did I not get two day shipping on literally any of the times that Acer screwed up. Why did I not get any compensation for having a repair take a month to complete? TLDR: If you do not want to have the worse customer experience of your life, then do not buy any acer products. I learned that lesson the hard way. ... show more

  • Just get it already
Style: Old i5-7300 Obsolete
UPDATE (9/7): The laptop still works incredible, and for the video games I play, it still works terrifically. Big flag was that I dropped the laptop and the back plastic behind the screen cracked-- replacing it cost me about $80. I'm still saving money, and it's still awesome. I work on my laptop and work remotely-- and I love to play games. My old laptops universally sucked at it-- I was a little bit trepidatious about buying this laptop with some of the reviews coming down a bit on this, but if your budget says, "Hey, I can't spend $1200 on a laptop", I have great news-- this one works well, has some nifty stuff on it, and games great! Just pull the trigger on it. Pros: - The backlit keyboard works great! - The manual fan control built into it "NitroSense" is pretty comprehensive and helpful. - The computer seemlessly runs the type of games i love (haven't had any issues with The Witcher III, Divinity Original Sin 2, or any of the other weird RPGs and RTS games I love) - The laptop I bought had a room for a second hard drive, so I moved over my old SSD into it and it works seamlessly (obviously no guarantee it would for you, but it's super nice to not have to reload everything from scratch). Cons: - The plastic does feel kinda cheap, but hey, I splurged a grand total of $690 versus the $1200 on some other laptops I was looking at so 🤷♂️. I did manage to crack the base when I put it down quickly on a table, but it still works just fine and I'm not worried about it (just know that you aren't buying a durable rock laptop kinda thing) - The keyboard had some issues for me-- I then bought a super cheap keyboard vacuum and haven't had a problem since (just make sure to take care of it and clean it). All in all, you're sitting there going, "Man I should spend double the money--" nope. This is what you were looking for. It works and doesn't look ridiculous in a meeting-- grab it. ... show more
