As a tech support specialist at our school, I've ordered over 10 plus Aspire 5's in the last few years for both school and home users and the Aspire 5 has always been a solid, stable performer. Good, commonsense configurations combined with great pricing, make this Acer model perfect for general home & school usage. I always like to add 8GB-16GB memory to help with multi-tasking and multiple browser tabs, but the onboard memory usually suffices for most users. ... show more

First, Pros - boots up very fast, under a minute almost always. Light weight. Very good processing power. I'm a mobile DJ and karaoke host. Bought this as a replacement for aging laptop and has been great in that role. Second, Cons - only 4 gigs RAM, but is expandable... so I bought 8GB sodimm same speed memory and installed. Worked great, but then wouldn't boot up later. Became chronic issue that it just just plain wouldn't boot up, or gave black screen. I was very unhappy... called to get service (which they were great about, but was going to have to send away to get worked on... which wasn't great. I had barely had it and not even really used it) Before I sent it in, I removed the RAM I added. Booted like a champ. So for whatever reason, it did not like my added memory. Have been using for months now and works great on the 4 gigs it came with. So, if you're upgrading RAM, apparently buy upgrade when you get it or you have to send laptop to them to upgrade...and whatever cost associated. Other con, laptop locks up intermittently... perhaps once or twice a week at worst, during a 5+ hour run (I have a couple shows weekly) not sure why, and it is inconvenient, but reboot has it up and running in less than a minute and my karaoke program remembers all programmed songs and starts at beginning of song that hung up. Now I can't say for certain if this is laptop issue or karaoke program issue... so just be aware that it MAY be a laptop issue. Lastly, the charging cord is very lightweight... the cord from the power block to laptop is very thin and I'm already having issues with it. So handle gently or you may have to get a replacement right away. (Also no built in cd/DVD player, not the end of the world but something I miss) Bottom line - is it worth the money? Yes. The one I bought was from Amazon when they had it for $599, which at that time this computer was a steal. It's really rapid in terms of processing etc. The fan(Acer Brand) came on rarely, although I only had it for like 2 weeks. One thing I really loved about this computer is that it's wireless card for Wifi/Bluetooth connectivity is 100% solid. And also unlike other computers that ive purchased in the same year, it's extremely easy to add on different devices such as printers, or to broadcast to TV or to even add drivers. Never had such ease with any device in terms of connectivity as with this one. Being that it's a 5500u, the U denotes low power version of the chip. The only area I find scary, because of a thing called CPU frequency scaling is when the chip is scaled to maximum frequency, which the housing may not be designed for. Personally I went for an H series chip, more power, and for me means housing built to take heavy loads. It's like having a V6 Camry, but driving like somebody's grandma, if you have no accidents the product is going to last alot longer. Also if you need the power, it's there. Oh and yea the main reason I even returned this product is because I was sent an open boxed item directly from Amazon, so watch out for that. ... show more

This review is delayed, I bought this laptop over 2 years ago. Since then, I've recommended it to most of my friends (three of which own this now) and even bought one for my little sister as a college must-have. I've been able to do most of everything with this machine-- I managed to complete my degree, store thousands of songs, video-edit, graphic design, and even play Minecraft with no issues at all. The fans will kick on and the speakers are what you would expect for the price, but I have never had issues with it not booting up or handling my course load. It was between this laptop and a MacBook when I retired my old laptop, and I've never seen any of my stuck up Macbook-using friends ever handle what I've been able to accomplish on this device. I own an external speaker I use for when I'm playing music or watching Hulu, I use an external monitor to multi-task flawlessly, and even though the camera is fine, I use a Logitech camera for the late-night Discord calls with my friends. My only complaint is that the battery is not consistent, but I'm also unsure of that is due to my usage or due to the manufacturer. Some days I can get use for over 72 hours, other days I might get about 12. Sometimes I push the multi-tasking, and it struggles handling both a video Discord session (screen-sharing) with my friends and a Minecraft kick. Usually, when this is the case, I turn off my external monitor and only use voice (instead of video) and it'll return to its regular wear. Since I realized that it does struggle with RAM (only 4GBs is a shame but expected for the price), I usually use Discord over my phone instead and multitask other things on the Acer instead of pushing it and possibly wearing it out. I used to hate Acer, but now I will die on the hill that this laptop is something that won't only get your kids through college, it'll outlast your descendants. Still works the same as the day it arrived, and I have no plans of replacing it. ... show more
