Description

Audible Studios presents a brand new recording of Charles Dickens' timeless seasonal story A Christmas Carol, performed by Hugh Grant. First published in 1843, it tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a mean and unpleasant man who dislikes people generally and Christmas especially. One Christmas Eve he is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come and given a glimpse of the many homes and lives which Scrooge has touched in his wretched life to date. After their visits, Scrooge is transformed into a kinder, gentler man. Read more

  • If you've never read it, you will be glad you did
Format: Kindle
I think we all somewhat know the story of A Christmas Carol, but there is so much to be gained in reading it. It's a beautiful story and it's beautifully written. Perfect for a quick read at Christmas time. It will make you think about your own life and maybe even others you know, including a Scrooge or two. I've always thought of Scrooge as a bad guy, but I feel sympathetic towards him and thankful for him to experience the view he gets to have of his life and influence. ... show more

  • A Thoroughly Modern Remake
Don’t let the cover of this version deceive you: Frederich March is not in this one. In contrast to most other “Carols” that take place in your sentimental Victorian times this one is a bold new treatment. Not only is this “Carol” in a modern setting, it is also Modernist in it’s approach. It all takes place in a bleak, cheerless housing project that makes it pretty hard for any sort of Christmas spirit to penetrate, a great way of keeping up with the times. Old Scrooge this time is a large, bald young tough, a loanshark who muscles people into forking over what they owe him, including an old couple living on their meagre pension and the TV set of a destitute family which he promptly drops over a high balcony, just to show that he means business. But the story regulars are still there: Marley (who is gunned down in the beginning by whoever it is that he and Scrooge work for), the Ghosts of Christmas Past (his own father), Present and Yet To Come (a mute boy) and Bob Cratchet, who’s son Timothy (no more silly Tiny Tim) is in hospital with cystic fibrosis. Eddie Scrooge manages to pick up a girlfriend, who is repulsed by his “profession”, and has to deal with Marley’s unforgiving mother, who is singing Christmas carols with a small group. Eddie Scrooge can be just as callous as Ebenezer, and he does have his change of heart in the end, but the time between ghostly visits is stretched out as he tries to convince Alice and Marley’s mother that he is starting to have second thoughts about things. One problem I find not only with this version but in others, is how to convince Scrooge, and the audience, of the impact of his impending death, not only that he will die but that he will also be unmourned, unloved, alone, his possessions just thrown away and his passing regarded as “Good riddance”. Eddie Scrooge may have stolen stuff as a kid but, like Dickens wants us to believe, he basically still has a good heart: it just had to be forced open for him to recognize it. “Christmas Carol” has never been regarded as one of Dickens’ best works -- as I understand it, he was a bit strapped for cash at the time and had to produce something fast and dirty to get some money -- but then the high-brows tend to overlook that this is mostly meant to be an allegory and not as realistic as his great novels are. Dickens’ intention has always been not only to show us the horrors of the conditions of lower-class Victorian society but also to change men’s hearts so those conditions could be more readily resolved without resorting to revolution, which he abhorred (you just have to read “A Tale of Two Cities” to realize that). But it is powerful as well as it is popular, and seasonal, as it helped put Christmas on the map of the collective conscience. And it is a testimony to Dickens’ greatness that it can be told not only in it’s original Nineteen century setting (where I’m afraid it has been too sentimentalized) but also in our more cynical Twenty-first century when its’ true meaning can hopefully be rediscovered. ... show more

  • A Christmas Carol
Format: Kindle
Wonderful story. Historic tale that sets the tone for modern celebration of the holiday. Much needed perspective on humanity in these times of political turmoil, greed and petty self-interest.

  • Warm narration for a cheerful story
Format: Audiobook
We've likely all seen at least one, maybe even multiple versions of A Christmas Carol, but it was great to hear the original words of the story, as narrated by Hugh Grant. His narration doesn't have terribly distinct voices, so there were one or two times where it took a moment to realize which character was speaking, but overall Mr. Grant has a warm delivery befitting of the story. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing the story and may listen to it again during a future holiday season. ... show more

  • Awesome
I have watched an awful lot of Scrooge movies and knock offs and I like a lot of them but I have to say that this is one of my favorites. I know that many complain that it doesn't follow the story line but even great ones like Scott's version changes things around a bit. I really enjoy the acting and a lot of the changes. I love Marley and his portrayal of the ghost of Christmas present. I love the fact that it is his future potential kid who is the ghost of Christmas future. I even enjoy that Groundhog Day vibe as they give Scrooge a chance to evolve. Overall a fun film. ... show more

  • about time I read this
Format: Kindle
After 67 years on this earth it certainly was time to read the source material for so many adaptations, rewrites and twists of this story. Glad I did. Well worth it.
