I ordered this 9pcs Petrol Engine Cylinder Compression Tester Kit to replace my 30 year old one that didn’t come with many adapters. The engine compression tester comes in a standard plastic blow molded case. The hinges are in good condition and so are the snaps. It should hold up well for home use. Most of the items just sit in the case. They don’t snap in, but when I opened the case, nothing was out of the place. The rubber hose that attaches to the adapters is assembled well. I flexed and tugged on the hose and it will hold up to normal use. The rubber O-rings on the fittings are a good condition and look high quality. The brass fitting themselves look good. The threads are cut well and they thread on smoothly to the hose. Very nice! The gauge fastens onto the hose by a quick disconnect fitting. It’s a little rough to attach at first but the more I use it the smoother it got. It comes with the basic set of instructions, which is good because nothing seems to come with instructions anymore. My opinion is if this case would be very good for the home mechanic. It isn’t professional quality, but that’s OK. As often as a home mechanic would use it his, it should last for many years.

Mechanically-savvy people talk about checking engine compression to evaluate engine health and a kit like this one from Marvelity allows that. Growing up I didn’t have such a tester so I used other ways to judge this like how the engine sounds and how much smoke of what color came out the exhaust. With this kit I can finally do things the right way. The kit includes a dial pressure meter with dual scales of 0 to 300 psi and 0 to 20 bars. 1 bar equals 100 kPa. The meter has a push button pressure relief valve and a female quick connect fitting. Also in the set is a flexible hose a little longer than one foot that has a male quick connect on one end and a male thread with o-ring gasket on the other end. There are 4 individual fittings that have a female thread on one end and four different sizes of o-ring gasketed male threads on the other end (which is what screws into whatever engine cylinder you are testing). Also included in the set are a straight and angled rigid metal tube with tapered rubber ends that can be used to manually push into the engine cylinder without the need to thread into the cylinder. The push to test method is good for getting a quick but less accurate measurement. The entire set comes with a decent plastic case. A bonus in-line spark plug tester with an incandescent bulb is included. You simply insert this unit in series with the spark plug wire to spark plug connect and look for the lamp to light when turning the engine over which confirms that the electrical path and coil is working properly. This kit appears to have what is typically needed and the price is reasonable. It's common to wonder if there's something wrong with an engine but now you can quantify the health of each cylinder. It's much better to know for sure than to guess. Recommended.

I've got a motorcycle that needs periodic valve lash adjustment. As with many modern bikes, lots of stuff needs to be removed just to check the valve lash (seat, fuel tank, valve cover, etc.). I thought that a compression test is a whole lot easier and can give me an early warning that the valve lash is too tight. If the valve lash is too loose the tappet sound is prominent. This set has everything you need with four spark plug hole size adapters and two rubber tip push-on tubes. I prefer to use the push-on tube to save the spark plug threads but I couldn't get it to seal well enough (probably operator error) so I used the threaded adapter for my bike (12mm). I wasn't able to test the pressure gauge accuracy against other gauges I have as the coupling is not the standard 1/4 inch air couplers as my other gauges. But if repeatability is any measure, running the test twice I was within 1 psi on both readings so I'll call it good. Now I think absolute accuracy is not as important as the difference between cylinders to detect a compression problem. In my case, my bike is a single cylinder so this test will serve as a baseline number if any trouble occurs in the future. Most review readers for a compression tester will probably know this but for any newbies reading, be sure to factor in your elevation relative to sea level if comparing your compression reading to any published specs. I live at a high elevation location so the difference is significant. The gauge is encased in a rubber bumper which will save it from damage knocking about in use and provides something to grip for using the push-on tube. And they throw in a spark plug tester! The quality of the set is good, it comes in a sturdy hard case, it worked well in my test, so it's five stars all the way.
