I've had the 5' x 10' version of this tarp for a week or so and this is what I've observed: The tarp itself is 12 oz, single fill, cotton duck. It's plenty durable. I wish the seams were double stitched instead of single stitched. Single stitched seams will finally fail when the wear is bad enough. That's why this review rates this item at 4 out of 5 stars. It does smell pretty horrendous when you first open the package, but a few days in the out-of-doors, especially in the hot sun, will attenuate the smell to acceptable levels for most people. The reason it smells is the Canvak waterproofing they apply. It smells like an army/navy surplus store. BUT, it is waterproof. I'm going to use this tarp as a bed cover for inclement weather, rain and wind. (I spend a lot of time out-of-doors.) So, once I got it ready I took it outside, covered my cot with it and turned on the sprinklers. Several hours later I turned off the water. The sprinkler puts out a lot of water, shoots it up high and lets it fall. My bedding was perfectly dry after hours of being subjected to a drenching downpour. The tarp is indeed waterproof. But, if one sleeps under it, it "breathes" enough so you don't soak your bedding in your own moisture as one would if sleeping under a completely waterproof plastic tarp. IF I COULD I'D GIVE THIS ITEM 4.5 STARS. I want to take off a little for the single sewn seams.

This tarp is very heavy duty. I find it hard to believe there could be anything better out there. Time will tell how long it holds up but It should last for years. The stated size is correct not 6 inches less like on other tarps.

Purchased this tarp almost a year ago for a "project" we finally got to. Refurbishing my children's 25 year old swing/fort for my grandchildren. I always used the heavy duty plastic tarps over the fort but not any more! Went with the 8x12 Heavy Duty Canvas Tarp with Reinforced Grommets and it does the job. Yes, it smelled at first, I have kept it outside since purchasing and prior to putting on the fort and eventually the smell dissipated. Actually, as someone else mentioned it was very nostalgic....it took me back in time the "minute" I smelled the tarp! Loved the flashback to Girl Scout camp and the big tents we slept in and....we had a similar tent in our back yard as a child and it smelled just like it! I believe the tarp will do the job and do it well!

This is a sturdy old fashioned canvas with strong grommets. I covered a sailboat with it and am confident that it will last for many years which is unlike the flimsy fiberglass coverings that shred after a few seasons. Great product!
