Who knew something so simple could be so amazing! I purchased this because I live at over 8k feet in Colorado, so plenty of kindling is needed to make it through the long winters. Using an axe is too much for me and I don’t like the kindling making task to fall solely on my husband. Enter this awesome little tool. Took 20 minutes to fill a 20 gallon trash can with kindling of various sizes. So easy and safe to use! I used a four pound mallet with it and it worked like a charm. Some reviewers recommend securing it to something so that it doesn’t shift around while you’re using it. I might do that but still felt it was fairly easy to use/did not slide around too bad, without that step.

So this is okay if you are using 8-12" wood for your kindling. All of my wood is cut to 16-18" because I have a large wood stove. Just when you get the wood to where it is splitting, it gets hung up on the ground and you have to pull it off the splitter, flip it over and then try to align the wood so that it will split in roughly the same place from the other side. If this unit were about 12" taller this wouldn't be an issue. It does have holes on the bottom, so in theory you could mount it to some type of platform that would get it up off the ground, but in my opinion they should make them in different heights, and that way you can pick the one that's the right size for the wood you will be splitting with it. Overall, still better than trying to cut kindling with a hatchet, but not as convenient as it could be.

I've literally only had this firewood splitter for a few hours as I just received it in the mail today. I already created quite a lot of kindling, which will help in making the winter a bit easier to get through! I purchased a hammer/sledge hammer {make sure you get a solid one that is one piece, rather than a handle and hammer/sledge head) at my local hardware store for around $8.00! I think this will definitely be a money saver, and will pay for itself in no time! I think it's also a good arm workout as I'm sure it strengthens the arm muscles, so it has several benefits. I definitely recommend this product and not receiving anything for my review. I just want to pay it forward in the hopes that I can help someone else's life to be a bit easier and a little more informed about a great product.

Opened the box and thought 'my toy is here'. Nope, it's a very good tool. The quality of this tool is the best I've ever seen in a cast iron device. I used to fight with hatchets, mallet, wedge, and severe cuss words from trying to stabilized wood and get the right angle to get it to split. WIth this, it's a matter of a couple small taps to start, then 3-5 hits with a small mallet and the wood is split. If a piece it too big, just split it again. I would recommend stabilizing it, made a big difference for me. Keep it indoors when you're not using it, and it should last a lifetime. Makes splitting kindling a breeze. Highly recommend.

I'm not sure what people are reviewing but it sure isn't this item! It doesn't split easily at all! The blade isn't sharp at all and you need a full sized sledge to split ANYTHING!
