This winch arrived in decent packaging, and it was in excellent condition. For me, everything about this winch speaks quality. It's ruggedly built. It cranks very easily. The gears mesh perfectly. The webbed strap, which I pulled out to inspect along its whole length, is well made. I saw no imperfections in it. The hook works/latches easily. This winch is replacing one that I have used to hoist my 155 lb tandem kayak/trimaran (Hobie Tandem Island) out of the water. The winch is attached to a swivel hoist that is typically mounted in the back of a pickup to lift loads up to 1000lbs. See my attached photo. I've attached it to my dock so that I can lift the boat, swivel it out over the water, and lower it, without breaking my back. This strap winch replaces one that had a galvanized cable that rusted anyway and kinked tightly over time. It was very unpleasant to use. This web strap is a huge improvement and I'm looking forward to using it. I didn't have to make any modifications to my hoist to accommodate this new winch. The holes in the base aligned exactly with the holes in the previous winch. The replacement was done in less than ten minutes. Since this winch is rated for 1600 lbs it's made to retract more slowly. It'll take more turns to pull my kayak up out of the water (four to seven feet depending on the tides) but that's OK since it's so easy to crank. Also, I'm a little concerned about the strap fading over time. It'll be in direct sun all summer long. As long as that doesn't weaken it, I'm OK. I'll keep an eye on it. I ordered this winch for a trailer, not to haul in a boat but for self-rescue of an off-road camper trailer. I am going to mount this to a hitch to attach it when needed but keep in the tongue box when it's not needed. I hadn't used a hand crank winch before, but after a little bit of practice I was able to ratchet in, ratchet out, and free spool. (Yes, these are on the product page, but there isn't a manual included with the winch.) It worked smoothly and seemed solid. The only thing I would change with the design is to have the solid part of the crankshafts extend a little farther. The bracket gets a solid section but when you put the crank arm on, half of it extends over the threads. While the slot still works, it seems like it would be a little more durable to have solid metal, especially since there is a little slop between the bracket and the arm. In other words, the bracket turns the crank more than the arm does. It's all solid enough, though. See the photo showing the thickness of the arm versus the section of the crank outside the bracket. Winch showed up and was exactly as shown in the listing. The winch felt nice and solid, the frame is a decent thickness so it seems like it should hold up well. The green strap is the only thing I wonder how long it will stay nice and bright before the sun bleaches it out. This was purchased to go on a car trailer to be able to drag a rolling chassis onto the trailer, for the price it's a great deal and far cheaper than trying to get an electric winch and battery. For it's listed use of a boat winch it should work perfect as well. ... show more

My husband's older fishing boat needed a new winch so I got this for him. I am clueless as far as anything about a winch other then you need to let the boat float off the trailer by doing something with the winch and this part I do know cranking it to get the boat on the trailer to go home. It has been a long time since I have gone out in either of the fishing boats so excuse me if I did not get that particularly correct. The winch comes with the handle off and it is easily put on with a 3/4 " socket. After that it is an easy change over to your boat. ... show more

I haven’t installed this yet because it turned out to be a little larger than the one that it’s replacing. It is powder coated black and the strap is pretty heavy Duty. There is a good hook and the loop through the hook seems to be stitched well. It seems like it will be good for the price.
