  • This Cuts Up and Would Be Better With A More Thorough Manual
Model: CUT55P
The media could not be loaded. I am a devoted do-it-your-selfer and this is my first experience operating a plasma cutting torch and I’m impressed by its capabilities and not as impressed by the lack of thoroughness in the accompanying manual. My initial project was altering a bracket that attaches to the back of a television screen for hanging on a wall. I removed a little paint to help with ground continuity and clamped the bracket to a steel workhorse along with the ground and a steel straight edge to keep the cut straight. Setting up the machine is straight forward using the manual as a guide, however once I began cutting, the arc flame operated and cutting began but continued for only a few seconds then cutting stopped. Consulting more with the manual I adjusted the PA (Pilot Arc) setting to its maximum of 15 seconds and then cutting continued for 15 seconds at a time then stopped each time requiring another trigger pull to start again for an additional 15 seconds. After thinking this over a while I changed the PA to 8 seconds and tried cutting a scrap of stainless steel. I don’t know what was different other than the PA setting, but cutting continued until I released the trigger which was exactly what I expected from the beginning. My cutting job with a straight edge was straight enough and to complete the job I used a grinder to clean up the edges and painted it back to its original black before reinstalling it. I do appreciate the Guider Support which helps keep the torch tip the proper distance from the metal being cut while serving to keep a uniform distance when using a straight edge or other pattern material. I would like more detail from the manual, especially a troubleshooting section. ... show more

  • A Great Starter Machine with Some Practice Required
Model: CUT55P
The media could not be loaded. Although I'm practiced with welding of various styles, this was my first experience using a plasma cutter. When it comes to steel or aluminum, there are a variety of tools and ways of cutting depending on your needs. This 55 amp plasma cutter by ARCTAYLOR is a sophisticated tool with a lot of cutting features, especially if you're a beginner like me. This machine will allow you to cut through any material that can conduct electricity so it's very versatile. This type of cutter definitely has its strengths and weaknesses when it comes to cutting steel or aluminum. Generally speaking, you'll get a much rougher cut with a plasma cutter vs mechanical cutters, so there's usually some post cutting clean up to be expected. I'd highly recommend watching some instructional videos if you're new to plasma cutting as although it’s relatively simple to jump right in, the quality of cutting can be highly influenced by the current and air settings along with cutting speed and basic technique. I still have a lot to learn but I've been very pleased with the results so far. It's best if you have a reliable air supply and for cutting thicker materials at a reasonable speed, it's best to use this directly from a 220V outlet. With that said, I've still had success using it with the 110V adapter cutting through steel up to 3/16" (5mm). When it comes to replacement parts, the consumables for this machine are not the most common but can still be found with a little online digging. The tips are not labeled and only appear to come in one size. In most cases, with repeated use, you eventually need to replace the cutting tips and/or the electrodes. The ceramic shields comes with a metal guide which is very useful for positioning the nozzle at the correct height and when using templates to help guide the shape of your cuts. Technique videos are also very helpful when it comes to getting better and more accurate cuts. This plasma cutter includes a filtered compressed air regulator which will project the operating pressure on the main display when it is adjusted for your cutting profile. The instruction manual is fairly basic but does include some charts for cutting different metals and thicknesses. Other than the air supply, the machine comes with almost everything else that you need to get started. Other items not supplied are shaded cutting glasses (typically shade 5 or higher) and protective gloves. Welding helmets can work fine for cutting but if they are not auto-darkening, they will be too dark for you to see your cutting line well. There are also a couple of extra electrodes and nozzles included but if you're doing a lot of cutting, you'll definitely want to have more replacement consumables on hand. Overall, at the current reduced price of $169.99 for this entry level plasma cutter, it is a fully adjustable machine and you can achieve some great cutting results. 5 stars. ... show more

  • Initial impressions+ update
Model: CUT55P
Update upon first use: There was an old metal heavy outdoor table that previous house owners left under my deck. I decided to try this plasma cutter for dismantling the table. First of all - I plugged it into 20A outlet I use for my 110V welder. After about 10 min of work on maximum for 110V amperage setting - 40A, the circuit breaker tripped. So, my takeaway - you may have hard times using it on 16A outlet. second of all - I used my small 5 gallon Husky air compressor and while it seemed to be enough to feed the cutter, but the compressor was pumping constantly and at times the plasma stream was shutting off by itself. So, as expected, small compressor is barely sufficient, but you can make it work if you work slowly. Third observation - the length of the main wire was enough for the table which is about 7 fee long, but if you work on something bigger (unlikely), you may need to move the machine around too. All in all - it took me longer than I though it would as cutting oddly shaped parts like table legs take a lot of different angles to cut through. And forget about cutting clean lines while working on something like it - it will be close to impossible. Caveat - the table was made of painted alloy, seems to include AL and potentially ZN. So it is not your average piece of steel. Still, if I was using angle grinder - it would took longer. So, I am pleased with this machine so far. And it comes with everything you need to get it going out of the box. Note, there is a plastic air tube that needs to be connected from the drier filter to machine - manual does not say anything about it, but it wont work until you insert this tube that comes in the box. Another thing - to hook up the wires, you need to attach the 1) positive terminal with the cutter 2) black control switch wire attached to the cutter 3) red arc pilot wire, that is attached to the cutter (it has round washer on the end and it goes under red painted terminal with a nut on the machine 4) and black ground wire with an “alligator” to the black terminal on the machine. I wish the manual was a bit more clear on all these attachments. Original review: When unboxing tools I pay attention to small things - packaging, markings. This tool does not disappoint. Soft foam and not styrofoam. Everything is packed well, accessories in a separate carton box and not loose. The next thing I notice - certifications of electric components. The plug and the adapter - both UL listed. I did not find UL listing markings on the wires though, so not sure if all components are listed or only some. But that’s already sign of if not top notch tool, but at least a decent one. The wire for the cutter attachment is about 8-9 feet - see photo. Not the longest available on the market, but long enough for most tasks and considering the portability of the tool itself - anything longer is not justified. So far only positive impressions. Will update the review upon first use/testing. Note - it takes 150 l/min of air for both 110v and 220v modes. That’s a lot, most compressors are below this flow level. So, taking breaks between cuts will be a must for most DIY applications unless you have a high flow CFM compressor. ... show more
