  • Very heavy duty winch, solid power in a compact package! Very heavy duty winch, solid power in a compact package!
Size Name: 5500LB Synthetic Rope Winch
I like to order items that are heavy duty. They typically last longer and tend not to break. This is a very heavy-duty winch and line, with all the controls included. Looking forward to using it for years to come. I installed this winch on a vintage 4x4 crawler and so far it's performed just the way I had hoped. Setup took about 2 hours, including mounting and wiring. Your time may be less, since I was working on a 4x4 that's nearly 60 years old, I needed more time. If you've installed winches before, there won't be too many surprises. If you're new to winches, be prepared to read the instructions carefully. They are well written and can be very helpful. The winch I ordered came with a synthetic rope. This was a plus for me because it's easier to work with compared to a steel cable. It's 50 feet long and plenty strong enough for my rig, which weighs in at about 1,000 pounds. I haven't stress tested the full 5,500 pound capacity and probably never will. Still, it's great to have a winch and rope that's stronger than needed. The winch comes with two wireless remotes, which is great when working alone. I didn't experience any connection issues while working at a safe distance. The winch includes a stopper, which is a nice detail that helps protect the hook during retraction. Line speed under load is decent. Not lightning fast, but smooth and consistent pulling power. I tried the dynamic brake once, and it held tight on a moderate incline. This is a good value for a strong unit. Compact, and works as it should. Well thought-out design, highly recommended. ... show more

  • Good for the money
Size Name: 5500LB Synthetic Rope Winch
I have not used this winch a lot yet, but so far, so good. Remember the pull rating is with an empty spool, as you add layers of rope to the spool, pulling capacity drops down. In fact, the last wrap has roughly half the rated pull as the innermost wrap. All winches are this way, just something to keep in mind. I can say that I will never own an ATV or UTV winch with a steel cable again. The synthetic lines are a huge improvement in my opinion. They don't 'spring' at you, they don't 'hold' a kink, if they fray, they don't have sharp hand stabbers along their length, and they are enough lighter that they tend to float on water instead of sink. Yes, they are cut much more easily, but IMO that is a small price to pay for all the advantages they have. I carry a short length of chain to wrap arond anything that could potentially cut the line. In addition, it is a very 'bright' color, so you can see it more easily and won't be as likely to trip over it. Installation is pretty straighforward - do yourself a BIG favor and get a mount plate specific for your machine, it will make things go far better - it will be the right shape/size for your needs, and the holes will already be drilled in the right places to match the ones on your machine. Use is straightforward, there is a toggle switch that controls the in/out, as well as TWO remote controls that do the same. At first I wondered if a remote control was needed, but after having it, I will have to say YES. If you are by yourself, you can stand outside of your machine, watching the winch work, while still being able to control the winch action. It also has a spool disconnect, so if you need to pull out any length of line, you can just disconnect the spool drive and pull out the line without running the winch. Twist the knob the other way, to re-engage it. All controls work well enough, the insructions are brief, but well illustrated with color coded wires so hooking everything up is easy enough to follow. All wires were more than long enough to reach where they needed to go on my Polaris Ranger. If you are unsure about things like how to best route the wires, where to attach the control box, etc, it is easy enough to find a Youtube video that shows how to best do all that. Other people have said that they didn't even hook up the toggle switch control, and just use the remotes. When installing the winch I figured I was wiring it in anyway, I just as well add the switch, but now that I've had it installed for a while, I would agree - you don't need the hard wired toggle switch. That switch took almost as long to wire in as the winch itself, and I can't say I used it more than once or twice. Most of the time, you will be using the winch when outside of your machine, so you can better see what you are pulling. When you are rolling up the line after use, it works best to stand in front of your machine so you can stop the winch as the hook hits the end. The only time you will use it is to winch yourself out after you get stuck, when you are sitting in the driver's seat, and you can use the remote for that just as easily. I guess it would be an advantage if you had the remote batteries go bad, but it comes with 2 remotes so if one dies, just grab the other. Overall, a decent winch, at a very attractive price. ... show more

  • Powerful And Compact!
Size Name: 5500LB Synthetic Rope Winch
Powerful And Compact! A powerful and compact winch with simple to use features. I installed this winch on a 4 car gooseneck trailer at the top mount. It allows me to get a vehicle onto any part of the trailer from there. The winch fit the trailers standard winch mount holes perfectly and the included cables are actually long enough to mount the relay and still have plenty of cable to get down to the battery box. The cables are very long compared to most winches I have used, 3 feet from the motor to relay and 8 feet from the relay to the battery, giving lots of flexibility in mounting and wiring. The clutch is a big green knob that is easy to see and easy to grab with gloves on to switches between engaged and disengaged. The synthetic rope is lightweight and makes pulling it out and rigging it a breese. The included remote is the perfect setup for a trailer, as it lets me pull out the cable, get hooked up and then walk along with or ride in the vehicles I am loading, a great feature for both safety and convince. The winch woks well in the hot Florida summer, loading 4 cars in a matter of a few minutes without getting very warm at all. A good winch and great value compared to the older band names that would have you pay double for a steel line version with a similar weight rating. ... show more

  • Poor written installation instructions.
Size Name: 5500LB Synthetic Rope Winch
The installation instructions are extremely difficult to read and lack step by step instructions. If I hadn’t installed a winch previously this would have been a difficult installation. So far the actual winch and controls work as you would expect. Longer term operation and reliability is TBD.

  • Great little winch for most projects.
Size Name: 5500LB Synthetic Rope Winch
I mounted this on my utility trailer, and it was much easier to install than I had originally thought it would be. The wiring is super simple as it's all color coded, so you really can't miss this up. I would recommend using some pretty stout bolts when mounting it to the plate, as cheap bolts won't be able to hold the full potential of this winch. Using the included mounting plate, even if your trailer isn't perfect, it is nothing that a little welder in your garage can't make fit. My trailer tongue is spaced pretty good, but I was able to weld a piece of square tubing and then weld this mounting plate to it without any problems. For the price of this you can't beat it. I have never had one that was a rope instead of a cable, so we will have to see over time how it holds up. It is out in the weather so that could be another factor over time, but we'll just have to see for the time being. So far I'm very pleased with the functions of the winch, the ease of convertibility of the wireless remote as well as how it looks mounted on my black trailer. ... show more
