These are sponge material, not compressed peat. They seem to work ok for hydroponics, but are not as good as peat cones for starting a plant hydroponically that will then be transplanted to soil. These tend to keep their shape even when planted in soil, and therefore if exposed to air at the upper surface they can dry out. more than the peat cones.

Oops. Nothing wrong with this product per se- I purchased back in January when I I was excited about my new Aero garden purchase and I quickly flipped through the images and when I saw the image showing what you can grow, I assumed it came with those seeds. I just opened the box now in April to start new seedlings thinking I had these but to my surprise I have no seeds. And I am out of the return window since I never opened the box because I didn't need them yet. Five stars for what the product is... It is as advertised, just don't be a dumb dumb like me and assume it comes with seeds. 😂

Let me preface this review by saying I love my Aerogarden! I have had it for over a year, and was able to grow bountiful harvests! However, after I ran out of Aerogarden pods, I purchased these as a cheaper alternative. Since changing out the pods, I have struggled to grow anything. Half my seeds didn't germinate, and the ones that did were so stunted and wouldn't grow. Now, I think I've figured out why. The pods are dense, they are very good at holding water (hence the algae), but the walls of the pods are so thick and rubbery that the roots cannot penetrate to get into the water. It's so rubbery, I struggled to pierce them with a needle! When I used Aerogarden pods, the plants would grow MASSIVE root systems that almost filled the water tank. As you can see from the pictures, the roots are struggling to get through the pod walls. I am going to give them another shot - after poking multiples holes in each pod using a needle, and hope that this will give the roots a fighting chance. If not, I think I'll just spend the $& and invest in Aerogarden pods 'coz these are a massive disappointment!

I was nervous to find the right sponge/dirt for my new aero garden, but these are great! The roots in my plants have been able to grow through the sponges and I can see how they’re usable for many different brands of growers. Honestly the price was great as well for how many you get.

I start all my seeds in an aerogarden. Always bought the aero garden pods but decided to try these. They are not as wide at the top of the growth pods so all seeds do not fit in them. I tried enlarging the top but the squash seeds get displaced when the pods are watered. Tried a bean seed and the same thing happened. I will have to use these for smaller seeds.
