  • Great Lens Sold by An Excellent Seller (Adorama)
This lens has numerous thorough reviews that can be accessed by searching "Sigma 500mm F5.6." This is an excellent lens which is very light. Consistent with online reviews, I found the handle on the tripod collar awkward for carrying the camera and lens because the handle is too close to the body of the camera. However, this is a minor inconvenience to which I have adjusted. The lens is fixed at 500mm which makes it suitable for photographing birds almost under any conditions. There is no zoom function so you are out of luck if a wider angle (less zoom) is needed. Although it has the "S" (sports) designation, the photographer might find that the lens gets them too close to the sports action in some settings. So, if you are considering this lens for sports, make sure a 500mm prime (fixed) lens will meet your needs. ... show more

  • Super sharp
Super sharp lens. Really compact and lightweight for such a long reaching lens. It’s a very pleasant metal feeling build- feels super quality. Worth the price for sure!

  • Light weight and very sharp images!
I have an unhealthy collection of lenses and this is my favorite. By far. VERY sharp images. Light enough to use for hours! Perfect on my Sony a7r V.

  • Incredible optic.
This lens is incredibly sharp, fast to operate, has fantastic stabilization, and unlike every other long tele option on FE mount, is really easy to handhold for long periods. Previously used the Sony 200-600, but that one was hard to get consistent sharpness from and is a bit unwieldy in size and weight. This Sigma is getting welded to my A1, I love it that much. ... show more

  • Light, sharp and fast
I shoot wildlife, especially birds, marathons, air shows and anything that takes my fancy. I have a Sony A7CR and I wanted a light, sharp lens that worked well with the A7CR. Another requirement was a relatively short minimum focal distance, On my Sony 200-600mm, that was 17 yards at 600mm, which is not good for warblers and kinglets. I sold that and got the Sigma 150-600. That was much better with a minimum focal distance around 10 feet at 600mm, But, like the Sony 200-600mm, it is a heavy lens compared to the 500mm. The 500mm has a minimum focal distance of 10.5 feet, which is great for small birds. With a 60mp sensor, you can "zoom by cropping". This only works well if the lens is tack sharp, and this one is. The second cardinal image was taken at a much longer distance than the first, but you still see good detail. The price of this lens compared to the Sony 300mm prime ($6k) and Sony 400mm prime ($12k) makes it a great deal. It is also half the weight of the Sony primes, which adds to its attractiveness. If you are used to shooting zooms, it takes a little time to adjust to the fact you are shooting a prime lens. If the subject is too large for the frame, you have to step back until it fits. But that comes with the territory. Highly recommended for Sony wildlife shooters. Sports shooters may also find it a great addition to their kit bags. ... show more
