  • Initial Review PAY ATTENTION!!!!
Color: 4 Stroke - 4HP - Style 1
I received my 4 stroke 4hp style 1 outboard just this afternoon and as is customary for me to do so here is my initial review that WILL be updated, edited, etc as time goes on. Butt I like to get my initial impressions down first so as to not lose anything. Where to start??? OK besides this style 1 4hp 4 stroke I also ordered a 4hp 2 stroke variant from another vendor here on Amazon with the intent to run them both, keep my preferred outboard, and gift the other to a buddy for use on his 1432 Johnny boat. The outboard I keep will be used on a 17' square stern canoe and maybe someday on my 1448 Johnny. I made the decision to go with a new Chinese manufactured AIR COOLED outboard over a used American, Japanese, etc brand water cooled due to the dang WEEDS that grow like jungle foliage in the lakes around here and how silty the rivers etc are. Simplicity versus plugging a water intake and not noticing or prematurely taking out an impeller due to silt... yeah simple just seemed better. That and I mean absolutely NO INSULT when I say this but as shallow as the rivers are around here if I damage the Chinese air cooled outboard so what??? I'll buy another and pay my stupid tax for not paying attention and hitting something. That's MUCH easier for me to swallow than having to repair my old 3hp American brand outboard I've had for years. Yes in time this Chinese outboard, should it be the one I keep, will have enough memories in it to hurt something fierce should I damage it, but until then it's like a Honda Civic.... drive it until the wheels fall off while taking care of it along the way and replace the commuter ride when it's time. HERE IS WHERE YOU NEED TO PAY ATTENTION!!!! This part MAY just save you from buying the wrong outboard for your wants and needs..... I bought the STYLE 1 and not the style 3. Besides the obvious differences in appearance of the lower half..... IF YOU NEED WANT THE ABILITY TO DRIVE THE OUTBOARD BACKWARDS FOR A REVERSE YOU WANT THE STYLE 3!!!!! Look at the handle attachment points.... yeah style 3 shows a clear bolt and the description says 360* turning and the word reverse.... STYLE 1 DOES NOT!!!! I didn't catch this and while it annoys me THE FAULT IS MY OWN and not the sellers. Late night ordering with limited remaining eyesight and insomnia I just missed it. I only point that out so you can verify for yourself and make SURE you get what you NEED WANT!!!! I REFUSE to deduct any stars for something I missed so my initial stands at 5 stars. Moving on.... the outboard arrived in 2 boxes. A long skinny ish rectangular box containing the lower unit, throttle handle, tool kit, and an owners or instruction manual. A square ish box about the size of a motorcycle helmet contained the power head and an instruction or owners manual. At first glance the manuals are junk so don't get a headache looking for even an exploded line drawing to make figuring out the wire routing for the on off switch easier. It's not there. Thankfully though if you have ANY mechanical aptitude at all is fairly self explanatory how it goes together. Granted in my quick assembly I did notice a couple things that I will have to look into and see if I can adjust so everything fits my preferences. Of note pay attention to the direction of the starter rope and make sure it's pointing in a direction you'll be able to easily start the outboard while in the boat. I need to see if I can rotate the entire assembly 90 degrees as I prefer to have the claymore shaped fuel tank pointing at me so I can easily see the remaining fuel level. If I can't I'll still be able to see one side of it and will be good enough. Rotating the power head 90 degrees will also give me more wire to play with to make the bullet connections mate up for the ignition switch for lack of a better term. With those observations out of the way I did remove the oil dip stick and it had a light coating of a thick oil on it. Test run oil??? Packing and shipping coating??? Unknown but it SMELLS LIKE IT CONTAINS ANTI CORROSION ETC ADDITIVES. Reminds me a bit of cosmo in a way. I mention this in an effort to point out everything I can and inform as much as possible. I was pleased by the chemical additive smell as it gave me a very good feeling about the overall internal condition of the engine. Translation less concerns about internal rust due to unknown storage and conditions. You will notice on the underside of the power head is where your centrifugal clutch is located. The socket machined into the lower unit was cleanly machined out and I didn't notice any burrs or chattering etc. 4 bolts to connect the 2 halves and yes the included Allen wrench fit well. The throttle handle locked into its socket securely. I like this even though it doesn't flip around so the motor can be driven backwards easily for a reverse. Again my mistake for originally missing that. The propeller on the outboard I received is NOT plastisol but instead appears to be aluminum. Flicking it with my finger it rings like aluminum. UPGRADE NOT NECESSARY!!!! YAY ME!!!! A tip for those who are totally unfamiliar with small engines and carburetors if you can't figure out how to hook up the throttle cable try this. Install the handle into its socket. Grab the little lead pellet at the end of the throttle cable and gently pull, if it doesn't come out twist the throttle at the handle all the way to the other side and gently pull again. You'll end up with a good inch of cable sticking out. At the back bottom side of the carb there is a threaded hole, stick the cable up thru it and start threading it in. You'll need to run the nut down as far a it'll go and thread that cable in all the way. There's a slot on a screw the cable is pointing right at. One end has a hole to accept the pellet.... make sure that's up so the cable and pellet pull DOWN into it. Back out the cable housing until you have a thread or two sticking thru and tighten up the lock nut to secure it. Check to make sure you have full movement when using the throttle and fiddle with it until it looks about right. Don't forget you still have to put engine oil in the crank case and gear oil in the gear case. Remove the propeller and the gear case cover is behind that. That's what I've got for now and I'll update this after I fiddle with it some more and hopefully get it out this weekend. So far though for the money spent I'm pretty pleased all in all. ... show more

  • Not bad - for the money…
Color: 4 Stroke - 4HP - Style 3
Really surprised at the unit as a whole. Came with everything installed and unfortunately no warning that you MUST open up the drive shaft at the propeller and install gear oil. NO WHERE in the manual does it say this… So, installed the gear oil, the engine oil and some 92 octane TruFuel and it started on the second pull. It dirties up the spark plugs and pushed my boat almost 5 mph containing nearly a thousand pounds including boat, myself and the wife filled with gear. FOR the price you just can’t complain! It’s a bit noisy but I can’t argue it gets you around. I changed the first oil change after ONLY the first hour and a second change at two hours. Pushed it on a lake for nearly a full 45 minutes at full throttle (after that) and no issues. Really not a bad little motor!! ... show more

  • Cheap
Color: Stand Carrier Cart Dolly
It does the job but is very light weight so starting the engine is better done with two people

  • Does the job.

Did not come with assembly instructions but, went together no problems. A bit on the light weight construction side. Holds my 4hp outboard nicely without issue.

  • Cool little engine
Use it everyday, cranks on the first time almost every time we use it
Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2023 by Great little engine, cranks on the first pull 98 percent of the time

  • This is a light weight unit. Flimsy construction
Color: Stand Carrier Cart Dolly
Was priced low. Economy model. Does the job for small motors. Motors over 100# makes it shaky. Braces only rest in a notch. Should be attached (bolted) to add security. It is shaky under load. First one returned as parts were missing. Axel and wheels.
