  • Everything You Need to Replace your Anode Rod
After watching some videos on increasing the longevity of my water heater, replacing the anode rod was the number one suggestion. To that end, I embarked on removal of the rod in my 3-year-old A.O. Smith water heater. This proved more daunting than I anticipated. The rod is secured by a large nut. First, I tried a regular socket, next a breaker bar, then a cheater bar attached to the breaker bar. The nut would not budge. I called A.O. Smith and the technician said the rod is tightened to 150 psi at the factory and I would need an impact wrench to remove. I purchased an impact wrench and that did the trick. However, since my original bar was not articulated, I had to hacksaw the bar to remove it as it was hitting my duct work halfway out of the tank. That took about a half hour as I did it manually to avoid sparks around a gas appliance. Turned out the original rod was in pretty good shape and required a lot of cutting. However, at this point, I was committed to installing the new rod because it was articulated, and I spent so much time and money to remove the old rod. The new rod was easy to install. I like the fact they included the proper socket and plumber's tape. I manually secured the rod with a breaker bar. Although this project turned out more complicated than anticipated, I will now be able to check the rod annually per the maintenance schedule in the owner's manual for my water heater. I can also remove this rod without cutting the rod. My hope is that I can significantly extend the life of my water heater. If I accomplish that goal this was all worth it. ... show more

  • Excellent quality
High quality product. Love the fact that this is magnesium and not aluminium. Not only does protect the tank better, it also does not disolve aluminium into the water supply. Small package due to the flexibility, and comes with the socket needed to change it out and even a roll of teflon ptfe tape. Literally nothing else to purchase. Take out the old one, pop one in, and then check on it every year or two to see how it is dissolving. **I do recommend using a 1/2" impact wrench to break to old one free. Keeps from potentially twisting pipes using a wrench. These are put in extremly tight. Save yourself some frustration. ... show more

  • Solved my problem
I'm writing this review about 6 months after purchase. I was getting a hydrogen sulfide smell real bad from the water. So I drained the water heater and pulled out the old rod which was thoroughly rotted. I installed this magnesium segmented replacement and refilled the tank. The first few days after replacement the smell was reduced by about 90%, and thereafter it disappeared completely. Now, 6 months later the smell is still gone and the hot water is still coming just fine. Thanks! Sidenote: The socket wrench that came with the rod was not up to the task, so I had to purchase on Amazon a 1/2 Inch Drive x 1-1/16 Inch Deep 6-Point Socket and wrench that came together. That didn't surprise me since these rods are typically difficult to remove; so I won't reduce my 5 star rating because of it. Now I have an extra socket wrench. ... show more

  • Easy replacement option
Due to where our hot water heater was placed this was our only option. Old anode rod had to be cut into pieces to remove due to cabinet above this option slipped right in and worked perfectly.

  • Extra stuff
As far as Anode Rods go - this purchase provides you with Teflon Tape and a 1/2 inch drive socket for the installation. Nice Benefit.

  • Threads very tight - wasn't easy to install
The threads on this rod seem a lot tighter than the old rod. It took me over 2 hours to get it installed. I removed the old rod using an impact wrench (bought at the same time from Amazon) very easily. The old rod was completely consumed (over 95%). On the first attempt installing it, I was only able to do one turn by hand, and then I used a socket ratchet to only get an additional ½ turn. I then removed it and put in the old rod by hand with ease. On the second attempt, I was able to do 2 turns, and again removed it and put in the old rod by hand to make sure the threads on the water heater were fine. I kept doing that at least five more times (gaining more threading slowly using the ratchet). The last time I was able to do about four turns using the ratchet and an additional turn with a cheater bar. After that, I turned on the water to the system and luckily there were no leaks. I won’t remove it again because it is so tight that I’m afraid it will damage the water heater if I try. My 80-gallon GE water heater is 20 years old; I’m just hoping to get a couple more years out of it. I personally would not buy this rod again. Hope this helps. ... show more
