This 4-slice Roter Mond toaster is a huge step up in quality (and looks) from my old black plastic-exterior toaster. The old one had quit working in any consistent way (didn't really toast much of anything) so an upgrade was needed. The Roter Mond is first of all well-packed for shipping, and on removal from the box the first thing that struck me is how attractive it is as compared to my old run-of-the-mill black plastic exterior toaster. This one has a nice sleek look with its stainless exterior and utile but minimalist controls on front (dual controls for each pair of slots). The controls are simple and pretty much self-explanatory, though the instruction manual clarifies most any question that may arise. Of course, as with anything like this it gives off a bit of an odor the first few times you use it; the manual addresses that as just burning off residual dust on the heater wires (much like the first time you fire up a gas furnace at the beginning of the cold season) - the smell goes away. I love the digital display that counts down -- for each pair of toaster slots) the estimated amount of time remaining in the cycle. And when completed the slots pop up just like you would expect. The toaster has a Bagel mode that when selected only heats one side of each toaster slot (to heat the inside of the bagel and not the outside -- there are indicators on top of the toaster as to how to orient the bagel). The amount of toasting / browning is selected by a simple rotary dial for each pair of slots -- the higher the number the more toasting received. And they include an insert that gives a visual indication of the amount of brownness/toasting on a slice of bread you can expect at each of the six levels; I have found that guide to be pretty accurate. The manual even includes some tips that might not be so obvious (such as, for example, if toasting multiple slices of bread in successive cycles, the amount of toasting will increase slightly since the heater wires are essentially pre-heated and will get to full-heat quicker in each successive toasting cycle). All in all, a very nice machine that looks nice if you decide to leave it out on the kitchen counter, and does a great job of consistently making nice crispy toast.

In my opinion, the aesthetics of this toaster are outstanding. The stainless steel, circular knobs and buttons, and rounded edges really look fantastic. Unfortunately the stainless finish that is used is definitely not smudge resistant. Just brushing your hand against it gently will leave behind a smudge that is surprisingly difficult to remove. If you are a little OCD, and that sort of thing bothers you, this toaster will probably drive you crazy. As far as functionality goes, this toaster has worked quite well for me so far. The slots are both wider and deeper than my previous toaster, which makes it easier to get even heating. Despite the deeper slots, the bars that hold the items up are higher than my previous toaster. This makes it much easier to remove items from the toaster without burning your fingers after the toasting is done. I have use this exclusively to toast sandwich bread and bagels. For the most part, items are toasted evenly, and I haven’t had an issue where parts of the bread burns before other parts are adequately toasted. Like every toaster I have ever owned, some of the heating elements don’t glow brightly in parts, which I would suspect would lead to uneven heating. But in practice, it really hasn’t been an issue. The time/temperature knobs turn with a satisfying click. I kind of think that the digital countdown timer is a bit of a gimmick, but I will admit it is sometimes useful for me to glance over and see how much time is left. As for quality, I think it’s pretty good. Not perfect – the knobs and levers are plastic that feel a little bit cheap compared to the classy stainless appearance of the body. The levers don’t feel quite as robust as I would like when depressing them. The toaster definitely gives off a funky smell when it is first used. I put mine outside in the garage and ran it through a bunch of cycles to get rid of the smell. It has been totally fine since. 4/5 stars. This is a very good toaster, with the exception of the finish, which shows every little smudge. I’ll take off a half a star for that, and another half a star for a few plastic pieces that feel a little cheap — it is a little too expensive to be sporting some cheap feeling plastics, in my opinion.

I wanted a 4 slice toaster, one that was stainless steel, and sturdy! This is a huge win!! This also has more settings and options than I ever thought possible on a toaster - including a timer. This is a HIGH-TECH TOASTER!!! This is an excellent toaster; I honestly do not use the settings or functions - I found something that makes the toast right where I like it and use that. However, if you have differing preferences, this will come in handy. Great price for what it is too!
