It opens and closes easily using the black knob thing. It's easy to use and I don't have to carry a key. These have been through a few severe rain storms and continue to work properly. Purchased 2 of these locks for my backyard fence where I store my boat. Unfortunately when I went to open the fence to remove my boat, the locks were corroded shut and I could not unlock them. I sprayed penetrating lubricant, I hammered and pried with no results. Ultimately I had to get my grinder out and cut them both off. These are definitely not for outdoor use.
