We used ordinary sheets and protective pads before, which had no cushioning effect at all. It was almost odorless right out of the box (a light odor that dissipated after I left it out in the backyard to dry it for a short while) and was fluffy and soft once it was unrolled. The full XL size (54"x80") fit perfectly—no awkward overhangs, no wrinkles. It lays flat and stays in place thanks to the non-slip bottom and snug elastic under the fitted sheet.
