  • Bought one, finally assembled, bought another
The kit sat on my front porch for months, but I finally dug deep and bought the 2x4s needed to put it together. Lumber cost less than $40, plus the cost of this frame kit, so for under $100 this was less than the cost of most pre-made picnic tables. Additionally, I cut my lumber to 5', a non-standard size that will fit better on my smaller front deck. Assembly was easy and I am pleased with the mechanism to switch from bench to table. While the price has increased substantially, I bought another one. ... show more

  • Very satisfied
After experiencing a very quick decline of our Austin, TX neighborhood over the last few years we moved out of the city and back to the rural central USA. And with food prices going up and very little hope this direction is going to change I decided our suburban (big) back yard into a garden/botanical garden. Started three years ago. Had to be careful and make it look nice, home owners assoc and all. It looks quite nice now (almost done) and I thought "I need some park benches!" and after some research I chose this one. Love it. I can sit and look various trellis systems I've built along with my peach trees and plum trees, figs, black berries, vegetable garden, etc. My second bench from this company just arrived and I have a spot picked out for it with two big planters going on each side. Me and the wife like that we can tilt the top and do picnics like we used to do at the very nice park close to us down south. Lol, I'll make my own park and mine looks better. Thanks for the bench seats.. :) ... show more

  • Sturdy, nice looking end result, but not without some frustration and design flaws.
I bought these to make a bench for our front porch as the one we had out there had rusted and fallen apart and I didn't feel like spending the money on a new one. Plus, I like to make things myself when I can. From start to finish it took me a few weeks. It wouldn't have taken so long if I had more free time, but I work and am mom to an autistic 5 year old so time for projects is sparse. In case you're curious, here's what I did, what I like and what I don't like about this kit. First and foremost, I didn't care for the "sand" color these come in, so when they arrived, I immediately spray painted them black. I wish they came in a better variety of colors, but painting them wasn't too hard, just time consuming. In the end it was worth the extra time and money. I'm glad I did it. After painting the legs and hinges etc., I went and bought the wood. I opted for a mid grade douglas fir pine (something like $7 per plank at Home Depot), took it home and cut it to the lengths specified in the instructions. I wanted my bench to be about 4.5ft to fit the space I was building it for. After cutting the wood I sanded and wiped it down, then stained it with a dark walnut stain. That was probably the most time consuming part of the whole thing. After the stain dried I coated all the pieces with an oil based polyurethane. Once that dried and the wood was all ready, assembling the bench only took an hour or so. The instructions are clear and easy to follow, and all the hardware is included. All you need is a drill, a 1/4" drill bit and a screw driver (and some contortionist skills and patience). All finished, the bench looks and works great and is very sturdy! So here's what I didn't like. - Color: I mentioned this before, but I wish they offered more/darker colors than just sand. It was annoying to have to paint them myself. - Scuffing/Quality: In the instructions, you have to flip the bench over during one step, putting the front legs on the ground. I was doing this project in my garage and was VERY gentle and careful while doing it, but the plastic of the legs still got quite scuffed and marred during this step and the paint I had put on came off (see pics). This concerns me a little about the quality of the plastic used if it could be so easily damaged during assembly. I hope it holds up well. - Design: For the most part this is well designed but there are a couple aspects in which it is really not. First, the legs are designed such that it is virtually IMPOSSIBLE to use a power drill/screw driver to make perfectly vertical holes because of the way the plastic molding is done around the spots where holes need to be drilled and screws inserted. This was SO FRUSTRATING! It's hard to explain but if you buy this you will definitely understand what I mean, especially when it comes time to attach the seat. This is a big design flaw in my opinion. Additionally, in the last step of putting the seat on, you can't flip it over so I had to lay on the concrete and drill up into the wood (but not straight up because that's impossible as per the first comment). Putting the seat boards on was really obnoxious and frustrating. I really think they could've planned for this better to make it easier. As a result of these problems, some of my seat and stringer board screws went in sideways or are somewhat sticking out of the side of the wood. They really don't leave you much room to drill holes and insert these screws if you measure and cut the wood according to their specs (see pics). That was also frustrating. Again, this is hard to explain but you'll know what I mean when you see it. Lastly, the locks that you push in when it's in table mode hang down when it's in bench mode and you can't push them up out of sight. It's not a huge deal breaker, but they're unsightly and I would love for them not to be so noticeable. - Cost: Notice I said "cost" not "price". While I think this is a pretty fair price in general, when I think about how much I spent on wood, paint, stain and polyurethane and all the time spent working on it, spending a couple hundred dollars on a new professionally made bench doesn't seem so unreasonable anymore. If you take this on, just be prepared that it might "cost" you a bit more in terms of money and effort and time when it's all said and done, depending on what you're making and how much finishing you want to do. - Brand placement: This is something that always drives me nuts. I don't want your companies brand (2x4 BASICS etc) tattooed in huge letters on both sides of both legs of this bench that I made. It looks cheap and tacky and less personal. Feel free to put your brand on there, but please put it somewhere less noticeable. All that being said, I have an end result that works well, looks nice and I have the sense of pride and accomplishment that comes from doing it myself! That's worth something too. Hopefully this has been helpful to someone else looking! I did NOT receive this for free or at a discount. ... show more

  • Good minimalist functionality in my opinion.
The bench itself was simple and straight forward to assemble with some prep work ahead of time. The quality of the bench really depends on the time taken to prep the boards used as the frame is self is not too complex. I fully recommend getting a flexible drill attachment to get to some of the harder to access screw holes. As others pointed out the frame can break/bend at screw holes if the drill is too strong so I recommend just lowering the torque setting on the drill motor so it would just stop screwing in before bending or breaking the frame and it worked perfectly for me. I used some scrap wood to connect the top and seat boards together before attaching to the frame. Key there is to make sure you have the width of the top boards spaced to fully cover the frame attachments. I used an extra paint stir stick cut up as spacers, 3 sticks wide on either side about did the job spacing between each boards. When attaching the table I broke from the directions and did the support board first. Then laid the 3 board seat already connected upside down on a saw horse and set the frame on that so I could pre drill holes and then just screw in the seat to the frame. As for the top I laid down towels so not scrape the finished seat and tops paint job and leaving the frame unlocked but fully assembles to get the distance between the two frames measured perfectly rather than attaching the adjustment points while not on the frame. I could set it at an angle on the upside down top and mark every hole, pre-drilled then realign frame and screwed it in. I went with 5 ft 2x4 boards. I had the hardware store cut 5 10ft boards in half as it required 9 5ft boards to build. So all I had to do was sand and round the edges of the boards to give them a softer texture when sitting on the edge. I added wood filler to fill in any knots or imperfections and then painted them with a nice semi-gloss exterior paint to protect from water and wear and tear. Took me longer to sand, add wood filler, and paint the boards than it did to assemble the whole thing. I did notice a little squeak between painted wood and the frame so I wiped down the friction points with some finishing wax to "grease" the areas and it helped some so when sitting on the bench I don't notice much noise at all. Table and Bench work well in their respective forms and easily transition between the 2 just by pulling out the 2 locks on either side. Its a fun easy project and if I ever build a second one I can have socially distant picnic tables during quarantine in 2020 and beyond. I liked the blue color so much it took me a day before I wanted to put it outside in the rain but the semi-gloss let me wipe down the table easy. Might be nice for interior as well in rooms right up against windows where you want to work at a table while looking out but then fold down to a bench when you have company inside. Good minimalist functionality in my opinion. I like products that can serve multiple functions with minimal effort transitioning or moving them. ... show more
