  • Accessory Required, Not Included
If you've used a lot of audio equipment, especially if you've found yourself in a situation where you need an arcane device like this one to complete your setup, you probably value the statement "It just works" a LOT. I know I do, and when this device worked straight out of the box, I was surprised. I completely misjudged this product upon opening the box, and I was particularly humbled! Despite one weird quirk, it seems like the manufacturer understood that simplicity and functionality was key. I found the device to be plug-and-play on every (properly configured) device I plugged it into. Since TOSLINK/Optical audio is a unidirectional digital format, there's no way for the device to list its capabilities back to the source as is now common with combined A/V formats like HDMI. If that's your benchmark, you'll need to go at least one click back on the "old-school" dial, and make sure to set your source device accordingly. You might need to manually set your device to PCM 2.0 (not a version number, just indicates 2 speakers/stereo with no sub channels) however a lot of devices primarily putting out stereo output (i.e. not home theater equipment, think PCs or some desktop audio equipment) are already set to that format. Some other devices like DVD players or game consoles might need to be manually set. The sound quality was fine. I tested 24 bit 44.1k and 192k (most common format, highest rated quality) and got great audio out of both. I can absolutely tell there's an improvement at 192k, which seems to indicate this thing is actually processing samples rather than just accepting the bitrate and dropping/interpolating a preset portion of samples. As with all things audiophile we're definitely splitting hairs at this point. I felt like there was an appreciable volume drop, but that should be a nominal issue at best unless your source/sink devices are particularly persnickety. There's one thing about this I found odd, though, and that was their choice of extension cable. They provided a M/F 3.5mm "extension" cable. A great cable to have with it, in case you need to extend the distance. But it's not the cable pretty much every user will need. Since the adapter itself has a female 3.5mm jack, and pretty much every device with a 3.5mm input uses a female 3.5mm jack, the cable that would have been most useful to include would have actually been a M/M cable, with a male 3.5mm plug on both ends. It's just baffling, because how could you create this product and yet be so oblivious to the fact that *everyone* will need one of these to use it! So, if you buy this, prepare to dig out a 3.5mm cable that'll fit your needs or snag one at the same time. The price is certainly right, and the functionality leaves essentially nothing to be desired, but it's not a drop-in, batteries-included solution without buying/using an extra cable you otherwise wouldn't have used. ... show more

  • Great adapter for quietly watching TV
This adapter works well. We have an older Panasonic TV in our guest bedroom. Most of our guests have Bluetooth earbuds or headphones, and we wanted them to be able to watch TV at night without noise. This cable (it includes a 3.5mm extension cord which we don't need) works perfectly paired with the Airfly Pro 2, which allows 2 people to connect to the TV audio via Bluetooth. For the USB power (necessary to use this cord) we used one of the USB ports in the back of the TV. The power cord on this adapter was plenty long. Just one note, on our TV we had to turn off the TV speakers because we were getting audio in both the headphones and from the TV. ... show more

  • Didn't work for me
It didn't work. I have no idea if it's the cord or the speaker since I've never used optical before so I'm just giving it a 3 star because of it.

Works perfectly and arrived fast. Allowed me to connect a nice computer sound system I had to a TV that only had the optical audio out port.

  • 6 star Product!
I recently bought a LG UA77, which does not come with an Aux port, so I bought this in hopes of using my Razer speakers on my TV and this product provided exactly what I needed!
