Lathing tools in photo are NOT included only the bits. I placed one of each size included in the kit to demonstrate the size for reference. I did not picture the supplied wrench and spare screws that are included in the kit. To get right to the point, I have no doubt these bits will suit my needs and wants without disappointment. The appear well made with a nice sharp edge. The assortment of bits is wonderful with the only bit that I may not use as much as the rest being the diamond shaped bits (my projects usually do not require such intricacy). The diamond bits are still quite welcome as I hone my craft I am sure I will use them as my pieces become more intricate. This kit will keep me in bits for a while. The kit has a great assortment of my most used bits. I must admit that my go to tools are the rougher and the circular shaper. I only recently bought the lathe set with the hollower. I know the hollower will get ample use as the items I turn are usually cups, bowls and small "artistic" pieces from my imagination. The inclusion of the small hollower bits is a great plus for me. The bits appear to be high quality with a sharp edge. I don't burn through bits at an alarming rate, however this set will allow me the piece of mind to be willing to change out a bit knowing I have more spares. I am "frugal" so I usually use bits to the very last of their lifespan. My personal opinion is that this bit set is a good value with a great assortment to ensure I have the bit I need when I need it.

Product Reviewed: 18pcs Tungsten Carbide Cutters Inserts Set, SainSmart Wood Lathe Turning Tool Replacement for $43 less 20% coupon TL;DR; Fine finish thin edge carbide for wood; very complete kit; Fits my import turning kit. I have a small carbide turning kit and these are direct replacements for that system. Photos show comparison of originals and replacements on my turning set. For me this will be a lifetime replacement kit. Carbide wears so well the only time I usually replace it it is when I drop a tool and even then I often sharpen them with diamond plates. The kit comes complete with a torx wrench and extra screws which is nice along with some of the diamond shaped cutters with a rounder nose which I think are more useful than the sharper version. The only annoying thing is the container the manufacturer used to organize them. It’s hard to open without a screwdriver but it does effectively separate the parts. 4.5 stars I’m happy. Recommended. How I review: Reviews start with 5 stars and I subtract points. - 0 for value but I try to provide guidance -0.5 to -3 for product not matching description e.g. stainless steel is actually plated steel -0.5 to -3 for product missing badly on execution I select products carefully so low (1-3 scores) are rare but detailed comments and critiques almost always are in the review. Most of my reviews come out 4-5 range. If possible I dismantle or destroy items to examine inner workings.

I’ve never been able to get as smooth and tear-out free a surface with carbide tools as I can with HSS steel tools, but I find them invaluable for things like working very hard materials, wood with mineral inclusions or epoxy fill, and going through bark. These inserts fit my EWT and Hunter carbide tools, and though they may not have the same polished look as inserts from EWT and Hunter, they’re ridiculously cheap. How cheap? The average EWT insert is around $20; these are close to $2 each. If I have to tear through an inch of bark with possible inclusions, I’d have no problem using one of these, and save my $20 inserts for more critical work.

These SainSmart Tungsten Carbide Cutters came in 2 reusable/storage plastic boxes with 10 compartments in each box, even though only 9 compartments are used in each (18 pieces). This protects the cutting edges and they came razor sharp. I recommend verifying with your turning tools if these sizes will fit them. I measured mine before ordering and they fit some of my Rockler, Easy Wood, and Woodpecker turning tools. They all fit like the originals, except for my square Rockler tool which was just a little too big (see pic) and didn’t sit flat with the bed of the tool. After I inserted these new carbide tips onto some my turning tools I checked them out on a piece of maple and they work great. I then turned 3 Ironwood pen blanks and I couldn’t be more pleased with them. They cut very well and I completed the pen blanks in no time at all. The included screws are a little longer than my OEM screws, and I also noticed that the carbide cutters are also a little thicker too. The included torque wench tool worked well and I was able to use it on some of the turning tools, but some of my tools use 1.5mm hex screws instead and I had to use the original screws. My square cutter turning tools never came with a square with radius cutter head, so I used one of them and I think it may be my “go to” tool now.
