  • Good starter pan flute for the money
Size: Left-Hand
I’ve played a lot of instruments over the years, but a mild stroke made anything with a lot of manual dexterity a challenge I can’t seem to overcome. So I’ve dealt with the learning curve for a lot of instruments over the years. Typically, things sound bad, until you gain a bit of proficiency, and this instrument is no different, except my limitations don’t interfere with the learning curve. So that’s my background, for relevance. The construction is very beautiful, no issues with unplayable notes; it just looks good. Design is sturdy and light, feels like it will last as long as I can avoid weather damage. Notes are all easy to play, though they do get harder on the higher notes, because smaller holes are less forgiving of imperfect blows. I was able to easily play the lowest notes, right away, but it took some time to consistently play higher notes, but I view this as the nature of the instrument, and not a product of its quality. I tuned the pipes to the Key of C major, starting with a G (GABCDEFGABCDEFG) to allow me to easily play C major and A minor keys, but you could tune it to other keys, if you wished. There is a limit, since pipe length only allows for a note to go so low, before the stopper inside would fall out, or the play depth is too shallow for higher notes. But if you chose different starting positions for your scales, you could easily set one up for any scale. Precise tuning took a few weeks of practice, and I’m still slightly tweaking it. With the lower notes, a large change effects the pitch less, and it’s almost impossible to tune as you play. This means you must make adjustments, and then play, and hope you didn’t go too far, or not far enough. This makes tuning the high notes difficult, as they are effected by small changes, more, and blowing consistently, is difficult. As I learn better muscle memory with practice, I reduce my blowing imperfections, and that has made tuning easier. Again, the nature of the instrument, not it’s quality of construction. A more consistent blow has improved note quality, and it’s becoming a more beautiful sounding instrument every day. I’m also better at knowing where I am, when changing pipes. As I hold the pipes, I keep my fingertips on the same pipe, so I can be more consistent with my movements, and the curves of the individual pipes help me keep track of how many I’ve moved passed. I don’t read music, I memorize tunes, so I don’t feel a need to use the note markers. They would be difficult to see, and are made for the key of G, which is the original tuning for mine. Most Irish folk songs are easy to play, even a few Jethro Till flute solos have worked. Basically, any music that keeps to one key will be possible. The biggest issue is when a half step (like any sharps and flats in the key of C major) outside of the scale arises. You can slightly bend the note by changing blowing angles, but I’ve not been able to bend a note an entire half step. With 15 pipes, one could tune for a chromatic scale, but I’d expect that to go poorly. A second pan flute, meant to fill in those gaps, might be easier, or just avoid those kinds of music pieces Overall, I’m really happy with it. It’s given me some sense of performance, since my stroke, and the value feels worth the cost. ... show more

  • As advertised. Good value
Size: Left-Hand
Came slower than promised, exactly as pictured and advertised. Two octaves G4 major to G6 with F#. The high pitch pipes are tiny and difficult to sound clearly. Was out of tune but easy to bring in with included dowel rods to adjust corks. Surprised at build quality for the price. Perfectly adequate to learn on and determine if better set should be bought. Left hand goes low to high left to right just like a keyboard. Was taped inside cardboard box and nearly broke it unpacking. Playing is similar to other wind instruments requiring embouchure but very easy to learn. ... show more

  • Quality Product
Size: Left-Hand
I'm a beginner and bought 2 different Pan Flutes. This one is definitely the better of the two, with good material, solidly built, and looked nice. The sound is rich and it is easy to play. I bought the left-hand one which matches the piano with low notes on the left. It came with a tuning stick and a soft case. I prefer a more protective case. For the price, it's better than I expected. ... show more

  • Nice flute.
Size: Right-Hand
Very good feel and easy to hold. Came with pouch and cleaning supplies, also came with note placement stickers but no instructions on where to place which note so not really useful for beginners, need some music theory.

  • Looks good
Size: Right-Hand
The instruments looks good and seem to be of good quality for learning to see if you have the ability to play a pan flute. The one thing I’ll say is if you’re short winded, it might not work so well for you. For $50, it’s not very expensive to find out.

  • Trash -- don't waste your money
Size: Right-Hand
I ordered this for my kid, who requested a pan flute for their birthday. I consciously didn't get the cheapest one, hoping that would guarantee a higher quality flute. The first one had a ripped band (the loop that holds the pipes together). Happens, I thought, but this is not a cheap instrument, so I probably got a lemon. Amazon replaced within a week. The second one seemed fine, so I wrapped it and my kid's eyes lit up on their birthday -- until, that is, we discovered that the largest pipe had a huge, long crack in it that made it completely impossible to produce any sound on that pipe. Quality control, F. Return window had closed. No way to contact the seller directly. Beware. ... show more

  • Overall very good
Size: Left-Hand
First, I've never played any kind of flute. Having said that, some you tube video tutorial explained well how to blow them. The tubes are beveled on 2 sides so the pipes can be played both vertically or horizontally. Now, they were clearly just freshly stained, meaning there is kind of a bad smell, so I recommend thoroughly cleaning them upon arrival. The sound is nice, the carry bag, tuning sticks and cleaning rod are also all very handy. After learning how to blow and checking the tune, my "guitar" tuner says just slightly not in tune, my untrained ear wouldn't notice this though, but after I get more experience and consistent tone, I will tap the cork inside with the tuning sticks to fine tune it. The other thing that isn't absolutely ideal is that the bevels and angles are just a few fractions of a millimeter off which kind of makes it a challenge on the very high notes...but it is manageable, and they would have to be precision machined to a few microns to get them perfect...but I didn't buy a precision concert flute. As I am practicing, my muscle memory is telling me which pipes need a little adjustment in position, so it is manageable. I would have given 5 stars for the price and overall quality, just the initial chemical smell from the varnish used out of the box dropped it to 4. ... show more
