    • Nice but with a major issue
Bottom-line up-front, very nice gazebo, but not for those unwilling or unable to mill their own parts, if needed. I purchase my Yardcraft 18x12 gazebo on February 19 and it was delivered on March 9; impressive how quickly it arrived. Overall, this is an extremely nicely built gazebo, very well packed on one pallet. The wood is all sanded and the edges are all rounded over, a true sign of attention to detail. The parts fit perfectly together except for the roof band boards discussed below. Assemblying the gazebo, while it does take some time, was very pleasant seeing how well parts came together. As with any wood product, there were some minor flaws here and there, but my real concern is with the Yardcraft customer service. While the unit is quite good, there is a major issue that everyone interested in this gazebo should know about. After looking at the parts that I received, I noticed that one of the roof rafters was in bad shape; it looked like the board had a serious split. If it were any other non-load bearing part, I would have not been concerned, but this was the center rafter in the center of the gazebo. I contacted Yardcraft and reported the issue. They sent me info on wood checks; I’ve been working with wood for over 30 years and I know the difference between wood checks and splits. I asked that the part bereplaced and they agreed to do so. Yet, almost 2 months later, I have never received the replacement part. Since I have a complete woodworking shop, I simply went to my local lumber yard and milled a new part since Yardcraft did not seem willing to replace it; none of the wood in this kit will mimic wood from Home Depot or Lowes, and so you will have to plane down and round over lumber to make a new part if needed. In addition, while putting up the gazebo, I noticed that one of my “outside post ply boards” had a complete split at the top which ran about 12 inches. Based on my first experience with Yardcraft’s unwillingness to replace my roof rafter, I simply fixed the split myself with glue and hardwood. Finally, while all paarts fit very well, I did have issues with the roof band boards. No matter how much I adjusted the double rafters (as per the instructions), I could not get the band boards to fit, requiring me to cut 7 out of the 8 boards; not a hard job but you will need a compound mitre saw to do the job. In conclusion, the gazebo is beautiful and for the most part a joy to assemble. Nonetheless, if you are a homeowner with a limited set of tools and you don’t have the ability to mill down lumber (you’ll need a planer for this) if needed, I’m not sure I would recommend this unit to you. Yardcraft’s customer service, in my experience, is simply not able or willing to replace defective parts, meaning that you are on your own to build replacement parts. This is the reason for my rating. In addition, based on my experience, I’m very concerned with the value of the Yardcraft warranty; if they cannot send out a simple part when they say they will, what are the chances you will get service under a warranty claim. This is so unfortunate since the craftsmen behind this gazebo are truly skilled. If you are comfortable with wood and you have a well equipped woodworking shop, then I think this is a very nice gazebo, with the caveats mentioned above. ... show more
