This is not meant to go in your bedroom, first of all. It is a server class power supply. It's meant to be in a dedicated space, preferably a data center. The fans spin at 6000 rpm (3 TIMES as fast as normal power supplies), they are loud, they whine, and that is perfectly normal. If you want a quiet power supply, order a BeQuiet and be happy with it, because this ain't it. Power switch turns unit on immediately, and most mining boards will power up automatically when you do this. The fans connected will spin as soon as you hit the switch. I do wish this company sold one that was around 1000w for smaller applications where you just don't need one this big, and I do wish the cables were a little bit longer, as it will struggle to reach across an 8 gpu mining frame if it isn't mounted in the center. Mount it in the center, or use extensions/breakouts and it won't be an issue. Otherwise, great piece of kit. I've got 2 rigs running these, and about to build 2 more. EDIT : Update on one of the units I received. The PSU was vibrating terribly when it was running. I opened it up thinking the fan was going to have failed, however, it was fine. The fans are dual ball bearing 40x20mm 6000rpm fans, and use 2 wires (red/black) to run. They pull 1.8A. I'm considering replacing one of them with a Noctua 5k fan that is much quieter. The vibration was due to two things : 1. The board inside the PSU has 4 screws in it, they were not tight. 2. There is a plastic shroud used to shield the components from the edge of the power supply. This shroud was what was vibrating. I could not get it to stop, so I finally just removed it and the noise stopped. ... show more

I have one of these exact model, It handled 1200 watt fine for months but I tried1400 watts or so and poof. Too bad I bought off other site. Bit it got an evga 1600 p+ on sale.

Great product. I haven't personally tested it's full watt potential, but if you're not worried about having a loud PSU, you can't go wrong with this. Going to be a little inefficient at the very low end, but it's not even that bad. If you aren't sure about the loudness, the best way to describe it to someone who hasn't been in a datacenter would be to compare it to a hair dryer. It pretty much sounds exactly like one.
