100% Hemp 6 Ounce Plain Weave Fabric by the Yard (58 Inches Wide) Sturdy and affordable 100% hemp fabric for historical reenactment clothing and accessories, modern apparel, and projects. This 6-ounce plain weave hemp is strong and lightweight, and far superior to cotton. Ideal for shirts and underdresses. Available in black, cream, and natural colors. This fabric is NOT pre-shrunk. You will need to wash, dry, and press before cutting any patterns, as there is a decent amount of shrinkage the first time it is washed and dried. After that it is very stable with no additional shrinkage evident in our testing and experience. You will lose about 7% of your cut fabric length to shrinkage — but that also means your thickness increases and the weave becomes tighter. (Fun fact — The lengthwise threads (warp) are pulled under much more tension during the weaving process than the widthwise threads (weft). So, when washing for the first time, these warp threads are finally allowed to go back to the relaxed state where their friends, the weft threads, already are in their happy place. So, all the shrinkage occurs in the warp direction, and there is little or no shrinkage in the weft direction. Cool huh?) Here's how a 1-yard piece (for example) measures up before and after washing: Size before washing: 36 inches x 58 inches (170 GSM) Size after washing: 33.5 inches x 58 inches (180 GSM) -Ideal for historical reenactment clothing and accessories -100% hemp -Strong, lightweight, 6 oz. plain weave -Excellent for making shirts and underdresses -Machine washable and dryable -Ships in an environmentally-friendly paper envelope (No plastic!)
