Description

Hornwort, also known as Coontail, has sturdy, layered hair-like foliage that helps oxygenate and clarify the water as well as keep algae growth to a minimum. It is found free-floating worldwide, in moving and still waters, or loosely anchored in muddy bottoms. The tips will shorten and thicken in fall, before falling off and settling on the pond floor to spend the winter as buds. In spring, these buds grow to repopulate the pond. Hornwort leaves are dark green and grow from a 1/2 to 1-1/2 inches long on stems that can reach 24 inches in length. They may be potted or just left to float in the pond. You will receive several stems in one bunch tied with at the bottom. You can plant as is or you can release them and allow them to float. These plants need at least 8 hours of light per day and they absorb nutrients through its stems so they do not root. Approximate Purchase Size: 6" to 8"

  • Great Plants...added "bonus".
Snails... there are now about 30 baby snails in my tank. Unfortunately I read after the fact that you should bleach your plants LOL so just be aware, they may be there and rinse your plants in a bleach water solution before putting them in your tanks. Luckily only one tank has the new additions as I put plants in all 3 of my tanks. Just be aware and cautious if you are like me and didn't know! Would be 5 star if not for the snails. ... show more

  • Kind of a pain. I wouldn’t buy this again.
Hmmm. I pondered this for quite a long time. The plant I got was in great condition. It had a couple very small snails on it. No big deal, to me, but I’m sure some people may take issue with that. The seller did their part, perfectly. The plant however, kinda sucks. It did not do well in my aquarium and when it dies, the needles get EVERYWHERE!!! (Not doing well, could very well be my fault, but the other plants are growing fine and producing new leaves, so idk…) They were the number one thing inside my canister filter. Also, the plant I received was in multiple pieces. This made it difficult to tie it to something or weigh it down, because it would simply come apart. What I thought was one piece was actually two or more pieces and of course I didn’t find out until my wave maker even made them separate. This plant loves wrapping itself up in my anubias, much to my dismay. I finally wrapped it around my spray bar just to keep it up and off my other plants. I contemplate throwing this thing in the garbage on a daily basis. My Red Spotted Severums love picking at it, though I’m not sure if they are actually eating it. I’d hate to take that away from them and force them to turn their eyes toward my other plants. ... show more

  • Came with friends...
The media could not be loaded. When I received the package it seemed to be in a good condition. The plant was a large green bunch, so I had high hopes. I set up the plant in a bucket to quarantine before adding to my tank and boy am I glad I did. I came back to check on the plant and saw worms and even a snail... if that were the only problem I don't think it would be so bad as plants and decorations can be sanitized. But it hasn't grown.... at all. I have it still living in the bucket changing the water with "fish" water from my tank. When the plant still didn't grow I added some seachem flourish to maybe supplement some nutrients and it still did not grow... algea grew but the plant did not. I figured maybe it didn't like my aquarium plant light so I took the bucket outside and I give it plenty of sun and still it did not grow. It died back a little which can be a normal thing for plants but never bounced back. It's still not fully dead so I am still working on saving it. I've had it for about a month and I'm still waiting on my nice green plant to flourish the way I hear this plant does... ... show more

  • It just floats.
Good but I was not able to keep it secured to the bottom. It just floats.

  • Despite appearance upon arrival, grows well. However, beware of snails.
The media could not be loaded. The good. I have had hornwort in my tank before, and am familiar with its ability to grow and thrive in the right environment. Upon arrival, the plant was about half brown and wilted. Still, I threw it in my tank, thinking that if it did not revive after 24 hours, I would write a very different review. It revived, and is in fact thriving. Enough so, that I have had to trim it back a few times. Please take care with the trimmings, however. This grows sufficiently that it is invasive to our waterways. Any trimmings must be discarded in trash or biowaste. DO NOT dispose down the drain, toilet, or sink; and do not even consider putting any of it in your local pond, river, or other waterway. The bad. In the seller's description, they state, "Also, please be mindful that this plant carries the possibility of snails. Do not order them if snails are a concern." This is mildly misleading. Here;s why: The snails that may hitch a ride on your purchase are of the species physella acuta, also known as the common bladder snail. These little beasties are also invasive. I found one (1). I am awaiting the spawn. Let me explain. These are also invasive species, and are hermaphroditic, meaning just one can spawn (and upon googling them, usually does) dozens more in rapid time. They are invasive and spawn so fast they can suffocate a tank by using all dissolved oxygen. Don't take my word for it, give it a quick google search yourself. So I gave the sale an overall '3' star rating. Not because the plant did not grow, or was incorrect, but because the seller made light of the idea that the possible snail castaways were no big deal, when in fact, they very much could be. ... show more

  • Hot mess!
Sooo. I gave it 4 stars for "value" simply because it is a lot, and you get multiple plants species (even if you didn't want them). My order came complete with a tangled mess of hogwart, what I believe is guppy grass, duckweed, and bladder snails (nuisance snails). So, that being said, if you're willing to spend a good amount of time untangling washing and sorting through the surprise bag, maybe this product is for you. ... show more

  • A very good product for the price
Some of the stems were a little brown and decaying, though that’s assumed with this type of plant. While it IS beginner friendly, anything to mess up the plant and it will stop growing roots. It did shed a little along with making my water yellow, though upon further inspection, the water didn’t change besides the colour. This product is worth the money, I was given about four 6-8 inch stems! Hornwart is native to Ohio, where I live. I’m getting some northern American salamanders so hopefully they like it as much as I do! ... show more

  • Well.. I didn't kill them.
I've had these for a few months now and they are going strong. I think I tossed 1 piece a while back. Everything else is perfect growing and thriving.
