Description

Hornwort, also known as Coontail, has sturdy, layered hair-like foliage that helps oxygenate and clarify the water as well as keep algae growth to a minimum. It is found free-floating worldwide, in moving and still waters, or loosely anchored in muddy bottoms. The tips will shorten and thicken in fall, before falling off and settling on the pond floor to spend the winter as buds. In spring, these buds grow to repopulate the pond. Hornwort leaves are dark green and grow from a 1/2 to 1-1/2 inches long on stems that can reach 24 inches in length. They may be potted or just left to float in the pond. You will receive several stems in one bunch tied with at the bottom. You can plant as is or you can release them and allow them to float. These plants need at least 8 hours of light per day and they absorb nutrients through its stems so they do not root. Approximate Purchase Size: 6" to 8"

  • Good beginner plant Good beginner plant
I never have had success with keeping aquarium plants alive, but this is the easiest plant I have ever had. The hornwort arrived in rough condition, mostly brown, smelled pretty bad, and dropped a lot of leaves for the first few weeks. I just threw it in my tank and added liquid fertilizer with each weekly water change and kept my plant light on for about ten hours a day. Eventually the plant greened up and began growing. I don’t have a C02 set up, but I imagine if I did I would have to begin trimming the plant. The plant came with snails, which all died while in transit. The worst thing that the plant came with was duckweed. At first I thought it was a cool free plant, but I was wrong. Duckweed grows crazy fast and most of my maintenance to the tank comes from removing duckweed. Would buy again though, I think hornwort is a pretty nice looking plant and it grows enough to make a small tank look like a jungle. ... show more

  • Tank ruined after buying these plants!
Short version the plants arrived half dead but I still put them in my tank and killed all my fish. So I’ve recently decided to get back into fish keeping and have had my tank going for about two months when I received these Hornworts. I had 4 Cory cats and two other varieties of plants that have been in the tank for two months. When the plants arrived they were still half green but a little sad looking, I rinsed them in a bucket to try and get any unwanted critters and dead leaves off and then planted in my tank. Within 4 days the plants completely died and started dropping all of their needle leaves in the tank and clouded the tank, so I did a water change and tried to get as many of the leaves out as I possibly could. 2 days later, and this is most likely completely coincidental, I had a major algae bloom occur, the tank does sit by a closed blind window and I treat the water regularly with algae remover. At this point I did another water change and noticed two of my fish were pale looking, by that night one was dead and the next morning the other had passed as well. 3 days after all of this I notice what I thought was ick on the last two fish and immediately begin treating with medicine and by raising the water temperature. Now I have never seen anything like this or something grow this fast but after two days the treatments had done nothing and there were like full grown worm like parasites on my fish and then they also died. I still have no clue what it was, but for $13 worth of plants I lost $35 in fish and my $150 tank setup is down for a month at the least so that I can properly clean and cycle in hopes that I permanently get rid of whatever that was. ... show more

  • Nice healthy plant. Looks good in aquarium. Nice healthy plant. Looks good in aquarium.
Updating my review after 2 days of planting in aquarium. The plant I received was very good and healthy. It had around 6 stems with all green leaves. I saw the positive reviews and thought to have this in my aquarium. The quality of the plant was more than what I expected. There were no brown leaves at all. No snails. Just had to rinse in water before putting into the aquarium. On 1st day I gave one 4 rating because the leaves are not wide open. They seem to be like pressed as you can see in the images may be because the plant was in the bag (bag was covered in a box though), but after 2 days The plant is back to normal and is growing crazy. I can see the growth difference in just 2 days (see pic) and it gives a good feeling of the aquarium, my tetras and Platies are happy with it. Updating my rating to 5. Definitely recommend this. ... show more

  • So far so good - like it.
First time ordering live aquarium plants off Amazon. I ordered 4 different plants from 4 different manufacturers so that I could see what the quality and service was like on live plants. This one turned out fine. The Iower parts of the stems had lost much of their needles/leaves and were an anemic, stressed shade of green. The top inch or so was still bushy and vibrant green. They're much smaller than expected, not as bountiful as the product image. They are in the quarantine tank right now and seem to be perking up, but have shed quite a few more needles. Bonus: When I was rinsing them, I found a tiny snail, which I was really hoping for. I'm looking to buy MTS snails so a freebie was a treat. I seems the Hornwort may have come from a pond as it was bit gritty and the rinse water went light brownish, so take precautionary measures if you don't want to risk snail or other hitch-hikers. So far so good with this seller and product. ... show more

  • Despite appearance upon arrival, grows well. However, beware of snails. Despite appearance upon arrival, grows well. However, beware of snails.
The good. I have had hornwort in my tank before, and am familiar with its ability to grow and thrive in the right environment. Upon arrival, the plant was about half brown and wilted. Still, I threw it in my tank, thinking that if it did not revive after 24 hours, I would write a very different review. It revived, and is in fact thriving. Enough so, that I have had to trim it back a few times. Please take care with the trimmings, however. This grows sufficiently that it is invasive to our waterways. Any trimmings must be discarded in trash or biowaste. DO NOT dispose down the drain, toilet, or sink; and do not even consider putting any of it in your local pond, river, or other waterway. The bad. In the seller's description, they state, "Also, please be mindful that this plant carries the possibility of snails. Do not order them if snails are a concern." This is mildly misleading. Here;s why: The snails that may hitch a ride on your purchase are of the species physella acuta, also known as the common bladder snail. These little beasties are also invasive. I found one (1). I am awaiting the spawn. Let me explain. These are also invasive species, and are hermaphroditic, meaning just one can spawn (and upon googling them, usually does) dozens more in rapid time. They are invasive and spawn so fast they can suffocate a tank by using all dissolved oxygen. Don't take my word for it, give it a quick google search yourself. So I gave the sale an overall '3' star rating. Not because the plant did not grow, or was incorrect, but because the seller made light of the idea that the possible snail castaways were no big deal, when in fact, they very much could be. ... show more

  • Insane growth rate. Insane growth rate.
First of, a warning to all for the sake of your city's waterways. Do not wash in your sink or throw/flush the stems in the toilet. This plant is an invasive species and can destroy both bodies of water as well fish. Wash the plant in a basin or bucket and dispose of the water in a yard or outside lawn. I'm pretty sure most of you know this but this is for those who haven't done their research. Alright, about my purchase from the seller. I received the item in the mail about 10 days after they sent the item for delivery. At first I was skeptical if they plant will still be alive when I get it from the mail due to the time it took to get to me. But, as you can see in the pictures it is alive and well. The younger leaves are a bit brown but they turned green after a week in my aquarium. It does say 5 stems in the description but as you can see in the picture it's actually 1 very long stem (almost 2 feet long) and 1 short stem. This will probably put a frown on most people's face but given their rate of growth it will take over your aquarium in no time. I have a 10 gallon tank and I have to cut the long stem into 6 pieces to give it room to grow but in just a week after they are already touching the surface of my tank. I have been dosing 10 ml of Aquarium Co-op Easy Green once a week. P.S. Take into consideration the temperature the plant will be travelling with when you order so it won't arrive dead in your mail. ... show more

  • Just enough hitchhikers to make an ecosphere Just enough hitchhikers to make an ecosphere
which was my plan B if these placed in my jar quarantine proved unsafe for my turtles. if it was only the two snails i found, i would've rated higher since cheekily hoped id get them (in a separate setup) but i eventually spotted the beginnings of some worms. long squiggling ones and one short/thicker, very VERY tiny, impossible to photograph and i'm glad i noticed because i don't need a disaster like that in my turtle tank, where i was hoping it would do well as a floating plant since they'd rip up anything else anyway. i'm not sure what seller i'm gonna try next if at all because its so much of a risk i've separated the original quarantine jar water with the 2 snails and a less green cut of hornwort to see what happens and the rest of the hornwort is in a separate jar where i'll do multiple full water changes, rinses and possibly treatment until it proves itself safe or dies because otherwise, the hornwort was fine ... show more

  • Fast coverage.
I bought only one bunch for my 7 gallon cube aquarium. It shipped in 85 degree weather and the package was delayed by a day. I was afraid that when I finally got it it would be dead, but there was only a little browning. I rinsed them in tap water, then in dechlorinated tap water and placed them all in the back of my aquarium. It hasn't even been a week and they have grown at least 3 inches. The top broke off of one when I was planting them so I planted it too. It was sticking about an inch out of the substrate at first. Now it's around 4 inches tall. If you want to fill a tank with green fast and cheap, these are your ticket. They are pearling quite a bit too. Also, I don't see any snails. Either my rinsing worked, or they just weren't there. I wouldn't care if there were though. 95% of aquatic snails you might encounter are only going to eat your plants if they are dead. I only wish my small hair grass would spread as fast. The "lawn" I planted in front looks like a teenagers beard. ... show more
