Directions: It's better boil with soda. Recently I have seen a lot of customer feedback about red water problems. I went to do a tannin removal experiment, add soda and boil, boil for 15 minutes. Soak in hot water until the water is cool. Add new water and continue to boil, cycle 3-5 times. My experiment was repeated four times. Then continue to soak in water, change the water once a day, and remove tannins need for 4 days.

I order in two sizes and loved the pieces I got in each package. They are beautiful and very unique. You do have to have some creativity when it comes to arranging them. They are an amazing price in my opinion. The sizing is pretty accurate although you may get a talk piece or a relatively skinny piece with no branches jutting out. I soaked them to remove some of the tannins but I probably could have soaked longer, but I got impatient. They released some tannins, but it’s healthy for the type of fish I own. Badass way to design your tank. I got the 2 pack of big peices and a 5 pack of smaller ones. Took FOREVER (about a week of soaking with some boiling too) to get ready but they look SO good. So this is my first time ever have an aquarium, let alone driftwood. I bought these two pieces, and they are beautiful, even though they are a bit smaller than I anticipated. I saw everyone saying in the reviews and the product listing to boil the heck out of this wood, and I did just that. I boiled water and dumped it in a small cooler I had since I didn’t have a pot or pan big enough to use to boil water with the wood. I did this roughly once every day or two for a little over three weeks and the water I was dumping out after letting it sit was STILL brown. I finally just said to heck with it and put them in my tank. Water has not turned color at all since adding, but I also have a Seachem Purigen packet in my filter so, that might be helping . They sank just fine thankfully, so no issues with floating up or having to anchor them with something. I’m like 90% sure this wood was sprayed with some sort of coloring or treatment because it just felt really chalky upon arrival. But regardless, it is nice wood. Just don’t buy if you plan on using it quickly because this requires so much time and patience. ... show more

Will be buying more. All of the wood I received was in good condition and not bad shape. One of the pieces of wood was a little under the size I bought but was still a nice piece. They were packaged well, though I was a bit concerned seeing it was in a bag and not a box. All in all, it was a good set for the price, and I will be buying more. ... show more

I was sure that they would be overstating the sizes so I ordered a bit larger than I wanted (7"-11"). Nope, bang on. Pieces were varied but very good looking wood. Tannins are extremely bad. Very dark reddish brown water after soaking in hot water. But that is what you get with very new dense wood. These pieces are not thin and dried out. Happy enough, that I ordered another batch in the 5"-9" size. Just plan on soaking and boiling A LOT before using. Edit: 18 days later. I've boiled these pieces and have had them in a bucket since the day I received them. I change the water multiple times a day with the hottest tap water possible. The water is a deep brownish red. No sign of letting up. Do not buy unless you want a blackwater tank. Edit: Over a month later. These pieces are leeching tanins like nobody's business. I would not recommend unless you REALLY want a brownish red tank. 2nd picture above is a goldfish tank where I did a 75% water change TWO DAYS AGO! Compare to a no-wood tank next to it. ... show more

SIZE: very accurate. EASE OF USE: goes well with aquarium decor. FUNCTIONALITY: very unique pieces for many decorating options. SAFETY: needs to be boiled and then fully submerged until fully sunk. Tannins are not to bad especially after boiling for an hour and then soaking for an hour. No leeching, crystal clear water. The pros are that the pieces look great. The shapes are fantastic. They're solid and have amazing textures. Also they are affordable. A similar piece at my local fish store is three times as much. The cons to neutral depending on what you're going for are that its VERY red, and packed with tannins. I don't think its dye, but its almost unnaturally red. Theres no smell to it besides wood. I heated and soaked this multiple times and let it bleed out in a tub for weeks and it still pretty juicy. It doesn't blend as well as I had hoped with some old driftwood I had. If you want red tinted wood or you're going for black water its not an issue. I put charcoal and seachem purigen in the filter to pull out further leaching. ... show more
