  • 3.5 stars, not excellent but pretty decent for the current price
I have been using this pump for the past two weeks and running well and shutting on and off as I feel it should. The main advantages of this pump are that it is lightweight with a wide base so it is easy to maneuver on the cover without it trying to flip over. Since it is so lightweight I am not concerned about it potentially snagging or damaging my brand new safety cover if someone decides to stop by my house while I am out of town. The included connectors are lacking as the one threaded connector is a fine thread so it is not compatible with a standard garden hose. Luckily for me I already have a "water bandit" hose adapter from amazon to connect garden hoses to barbed connectors, as well as I also have a section of tubing from my old pump that I was able to use on this. I get a ton of leaves in the fall and I have yet to run into any issues with it getting restricted by debris. This thing is nowhere near 1200 gph and I am estimating it at maybe around 350-500 GPM, if your lucky, but realistically I knew that was an unrealistic number when I ordered this. I have an inground pool and my yard slopes away from the pool so the water is effectively being pushed at a max of a six inch lift when priming but after the water starts flowing it would naturally syphon so realistically in my usage there is no stress from lifting the water to inhibit the flow rate. All in all for the price compared to other pumps its pretty decent as many sub $100 pumps either aren't automatic at all, the automatic sensors fail causing it to run dry, or they just don't pump so I am not mad at this but there is some room for improvement with the connectors as well as truth in advertising regarding the flow rate. In my case this is to replace a $150 pump that failed sometime between removing this spring and trying to use it this fall so the big question will be if this survives through fall next year. ... show more

  • Can jam from sand making it past screen, disassembly reveals tiny motor and impeller. 600 GPH
I like the flat form factor of this pump and how it won't easily tip over, and the automatic function without moving parts. Setting this down where I wanted to pump out water though, it needed some extra weight to keep my discharge hose from tipping it over. The pump assembly is quite light weight, so it can be tossed out onto a pool cover or such easily. The 26' cord allows you to connect to an extension cord past the edge of the pool where it won't be submerged. In testing, I found it only draws 62 watts in operation, less than half an amp. So, any light duty extension cord should be adequate. Pumping horizontally at zero head it filled a 5 gallon bucket in 31 seconds, so transferred at 600 gph, only 40% of its claimed rate. It was able to push water up at least fifteen feet, but I didn't test the 25 ft claim fully. The first time I ran this, it had some dirt and sand which I tried to rinse out and have the pump evacuate, and it soon jammed up and seized with a squeak. There is a small suction screen cover on the bottom, but I had to disassemble the entire base and dismount the pump and impeller housing to access the impeller and remove the small flakes of rock which had made it past the screen and jammed the pump. It was surprising to see how small the pump actually was, and dismaying how involved the process is to clean the pump. After reassembly and testing, I bagged the entire pump unit in a soft mesh screen rainbarrel cover to act as a prefilter and prevent pine needles or sand from getting in there again. The small suction screen is on the bottom and so might avoid rapid accumulation of leaves and needles if left in place on a pool cover. I think the screen area could be larger and have smaller holes to prevent experiences like mine. While the automatic function works to shut the pump off after the water is evacuated, there were a couple of issues I found with it. First, the unit consumes about a watt of power while waiting to pump, something which wouldn't happen with a traditional float switch. The controller also continues to pump for a set period of time after water is no longer sensed, leading to air being pumped into the discharge hose. I had a check valve on the end of the discharge hose with my previous pump, but for this pump I needed to move it closer to the pump to prevent backwash and excessive cycling. For the current price of $80-12%, I think this is a bit overpriced after seeing the internals and considering the difficulty of maintenance. If you have debris like leaves or pine needles, I'd recommend a pre-filter bag around the pump to avoid having to disassemble and clear the impeller. The 1500 gph claim is wildly exaggerated. It's a lightweight, low power automatic pump best for intermittent use with semi-clean water, and comes with a few right angle fittings, a hose clamp, and spare o-rings. ... show more
