I got this to put in my bird bath that I set up near my hummingbird garden. I wanted a gentle spray for the hummingbirds because as it gets jot here in the south, they love a spray of water and will even buzz through the spray of water from my garden hose when I am watering. I didn't have very high expectations for this little fountain but it was inexpensive so I thought I would try it. It comes with 3 different spray heads. I picked one more or less at random and snapped it on the cone-shaped nozzle. That then snaps into a hole in the center of the solar disk. My fountain was already clean and full of water so I just gently placed the fountain in the water. Voila! It started sending up a gentle spray of water immediately. I couldn't believe it was so easy and worked so well. The spray goes up about 10 inches as long as it has direct sunlight. I passed my hand over it to block the sun and the spray went to a trickle. When I pulled my hand back, the merry little spray shot back up! I love it. I will note that I had to add 3 stones to the bottom of the bird vath bowl as it wasn't quite level and the fountain kept drifting to one edge and ghe spray would send water out of the bowl, emptying it over time. So I just put three stones in the bowl so if the fountain drifts, it will bump into a stone and stay fairly near the center of the bird bath. The birds like the stones to sit on, anyway, because the water is a little deep for some of them, so it all works out. I do have to keep the fountain and bird bath clean as debris will affect the fountain, but it needs to be kept clean anyway for the birds, so that is okay. I love watching it work. These work perfectly right out of the package. There are choices for the spray pattern or just a gently bubbling fountain. Simple to put together and now they have these rods you insert to center (or not) the fountain. I have bought these before, they lasted several summers. Probably last even longer if your dog doesn't try tasting them, LOL. Since my set up for these is a huge flower pot turned into a fountain with small goldfish, I have to take them down when the weather gets really cold. The goldfish go to my friends goldfish pond every year and I start fresh when it warms up again. But the product lasts a long time for the money!! ... show more

Finally bought this after seeing several advertisements ~ LOVE IT! It has added a little fun to our birdbath and I found I check it reg'ly as it makes me happy. Plus, it has added some fun to our summer yard. I have now bought 2 more (1 to replace the original see info below). I have 1 unit in the bird bath and now added one to our little waterfall/pond (5' x 3' pool). They turn on with the sun and off when in shade so they do not run all the time like a solar charged battery allows. I actually like this arrangement better. The fountain starts spraying as soon as the sun shines on it. It turns off responsively too~ if light is temporarily blocked (a shadow from my hand as I fill the Bbath or a temp pass of a cloud), it turns off immediately. It is so immediately responsive, it gives the impression of an off/on switch. It does not have a switch so If we are leaving for a few days, I just put it on the shelf on our covered deck where it stays turned off until I set it in water again. The different fountain heads in deed provide for a variety of patterns of spray. It is a powerful little thing too , 1 of the heads shoots easily 12 -18" high. If you choose not to use a patterned spray head, water will just gurgle & bubble out of the top which the birds like as well. I learned to put a ring of rocks in the bird bath to keep it centered & prevent it from moving itself too close to the edge & spilling water over the side. Colo had a string of 90+ degree days in Aug this year, so I would fill the bath everyday. If water gets too low the fountain cannot spray. Also, the motor will continue to run if the sun shines on the device but there's no water. This happened 1 or 2 and I could hear it running as soon as I walked out on the deck; it was +30'away which demonstrated the motor has plenty of power. However, It's completely quiet while in water. After 3 months of use it just quit working BUT I feel there was 1 too many times I let it run completely dry. I ordered 2 more to replace the original and added the second unit to our lil pond /waterfall area. It works great in the pond and scoots itself all over the surface. Another tip to users : I used fishing line to tie a rock to the unit thereby tethering it so it would stay out of the shaded areas and prevent it from getting stuck up against the edges. It is working great and I do not have to worry about it running out of water! As for longevity we will see; I intend to use 1 unit in the heated bird bath this winter. We'll see how cold weather affects it but also keeping in mind Denver temps can be on the mild - moderate side with a mix of cold to comfortable. Generally it is not like the looong freezing winters of the Northern states. If the 2 units do not hold up thru the next few Fall months, I will edit my 3 star longevity rating. it is a fun little feature and I recommend it to others ~ in fact I may put it under the tree this Xmas! ********update: the 2 new units i bought since writing this review have held up very well!! I still luv these little fountainheads. I decided to NOT use them Nov-Feb. but outside of that time period they are in water & working almost everyday. To store them I simply take them out of water & keep covered thru winter months. I even left them outside on a shelf where they live thru extreme temp changes. I keep the 5 star rating & would go higher if i could for these reasons: longevity excellent, affordability vs value is outstanding, ease of use & maintenance could not be easer or more convenient. I would add a durability rating & give it the highest rating too. This is in consideration of my experience that they are out in all weather i.e. wide temp swings of Co. Springtime -32 -80+ that cause feet of snow, Summer’s extreme heat over100+ , hailstorms & even Fall nites that cool quickly. It’s a wonderful , fun affordable & durable addition to the yard or any body of water u want to make a lil more special but a low work impact! I’ll try to add picts next ... show more

I put the solar fountain in the bird bath and it worked well and initially I thought it was great. However, on the next afternoon there was a breeze which resulted in the water to be blown out of the bird bath so I had to keep putting water in there to keep it functional. I also noticed that the "solar" function works but only if the unit is in direct sun light. After a few days, I just got tired of refilling the water and the final straw was when I was washing my car, I got tired of hearing the whine of the pump when the bird bath went dry. It happened to be trash day and the trash cart was near the street so I took the opportunity to throw it away. Update: I did not intend to be negative in my review of the product itself, so I decided to provide some clarification. This product clearly works well under optimal conditions. High winds combined with the fact our bird bath is small just was not conducive to the operation of the Solatec Solar fountain. In fact, you could say its durability is a plus because it still ran after all the water was "blown out" of the bird bath. It was the whine of the motor that continued to run even after the water was blown clear that made me decide to throw it away. If you are willing the maintain an optimal environment for this item, it works great. I think the company is making a great effort to provide a high quality product...just not a good fit for our bird bath. ... show more

I chose this floating fountain over others that had poor reviews and it stopped workinf very quickly as seems to be the norm with this type of solar fountain. I bought this in November and because the weather turned cold, waited until March to put it in the pond. When I took it out of the box, the motor came on as soon as I walked into the sun and spouted water when placed in the pond. The next day I noticed the spray was weak and assumed it was because the sun was setting so the light wasn't as strong. After the second day, I never saw the fountain working again. I went out the other day and checked it at noon when it was in bright sun and there was no sound or activity from the fountain. When I took it out of the pond, the underside was clean with no sign of debris that might have clogged the pump. That was when I noticed that the compartment that you would usually open to clean and maintain the pump had been fused shut my the way the manufacturer welded the pump to the solar panel. Most water pumps will need cleaning eventually as they suck in debris such as plant particles and even pet hair and feathers that land in the water, so this is basically a single-use fountain that will only last until the first time it needs cleaning or maintenance. It does have a one year warranty, but Amazon requires me to send it back which I'm not thrilled about because my to-do list is already far too long at the moment. Next time, I would rather spend more money on a fountain that lasts instead of having to spend time washing and repacking one that doesn't work. ... show more

Bought this last year when I replaced my old bird bath with a new one. I was looking for a way to keep me from having to change the water so often because of it getting dirty. As many have said in their reviews, I found the nozzles provided would shoot the water out too far - it kept landing outside of the bowl. But this was easily solved by just not using any of the nozzles. The solar panels on this thing provide barely enough energy to run the pump. The tiniest amount of shade - even a cloud passing overhead - affects the fountain's flow. If your bird bath sits in the shade for most of the day, you may want to consider something else. It's very easy to clean, which is a necessity because somehow birds find ways to leave pieces of worm and other junk in the water. It can be done without tools, I literally do it when I refill the bird bath. Pull out the filter, spray it clean, hose off the underside of the unit, reassemble. That's all it takes. If it's a really sunny day but your fountain doesn't seem to be pumping as it used to, check that little filter. Importantly: even in partial sunlight, there's some flow, which is the whole point. Any flow at all helps to keep the water in better shape for the birds. So, yeah, it works. But what prompted me to write this review is just how well it works and the variety of conditions it endures without failing. I left mine out when winter hit, mostly as a mistake because we got hit with cold weather unexpectedly. The solar fountain was frozen in the bird bath. Next day, as soon as the sun warmed up the water enough, the fountain started working again. It did this dozens of times throughout the winter. Once it was frozen for a week straight. It was sunny though, and I could put my hand on the fountain and feel the pump running even though all the water was frozen. I really didn't expect it to last the winter because of that. I thought running the pump like that would kill it. But here we are, it's the next spring, and it's still as good as new, excepting the occasional bird scratch on the top. I feel like the money I spent on this thing was worth it. And at the price point it sits on, if it dies because of my abuse, well I'll buy it again. ... show more

    • Not Quite Ready for Primetime

I just received and installed the fountain. So I can't address longevity. As for the serviceability, I have seven comments (see video for illustration): (1) The suction cups are incapable of keeping the fountain attached to my plastic birdbath. So to keep it submerged as instructed I placed a 22mm socket over the center of the fountain to keep it submerged. (2) Even if the suction cups worked, they are off center. So I placed a small pebble at the proper spot under the outside edge of the fountain to keep it level. (3) The pump did not produce enough pressure for the larger shower head looking sprays. I used the small line size spray. (4) I worry that, should my 22mm socket fall off the fountain and spray piping would be separated and blown away by a reasonably strong gust of wind. Something is needed to keep it together (maybe locking connections) and in the birdbath. (5) That said, the little adapter that connects the piping to the pump does not attach securely to the pump. The lightest gust is likely to send it flying. However it very securely connects to the fountain head piping and pliers are required to separate the two pieces. (6) My 22mm socket filled with water (not shown) and now the the water erupts gently when the pump burps. (7) The birds seem to like it so far. ... show more
