    • A Great Start for Budding Violinists

My kids school leans on the classical side, so when we found out that they would be learning violin as early as first grade I thought it would be a good idea to have one on hand that they could use as they learn. Although this one is a bit bigger than the small child size they're learning on, we had the music teacher check it out and set it up for us, and she confirmed that it was perfectly adequate to use as they grew up. We were all impressed with the amount of accessories there were included, including the protective case, and everything you'd need to set it up and maintain it. It does take a bit of work on the front end to get it tuned and adjusted correctly, so it is a pretty good idea to allow a pro to help you with that. Overall, for the price, we are satisfied with it. Although the school provides violins for the kids to use during school hours, it is Handy to have one of your own that you can use for practice or for performances in the church orchestra as well. My daughter is a budding musician through the wonders of summer camps, first piano and then violins. I'll admit we're total strangers to violins and had no idea what we were getting ourselves into, but I was pleasantly surprised this set pretty much had everything you need, including a tuner to get started. As someone totally be to this game, it took some additional YouTube videos to be able to follow the setup instructions, as I think they assume you at least have the most basic knowledge which I do not have. It also didn't help one of the strings came completely loose from the tuning peg. Despite all that I was able to complete the restring and tuning in about half an hour - likely way more time for someone who knows what they're doing but I'd consider it success for someone like me. I have to admit though, the amount of adjustments needed are fairly minute making it easy to over correct. I got that from the instructions, I just didn't appreciate how sensitive it is. I can't really comment on how good the sound is given my lack of prior experience, but when my daughter tried playing it at least sounded respectable (again, this is just from her exposure to it from summer camp) and she commented it felt similar to the one from camp. The violin itself is a stunner. The green finish is furniture grade, it is smooth, semi-glossy and free of blemishes. The curves and cutouts are equally clean sand smooth, which exceeded my expectations - for the price sand size I thought it might be more roughly finished but it isn't. It is for beginners. Temper your expectations if you want the tonal quality of a violin which costs many, many times over this one. That doesn't make it a bad violin, by any means! I really, really like the finish, though somehow I had it in my head it was going to be flat black and it arrived gloss black. I can live with that. It's still fun. I'm an adult, and I got this to learn a little on; I don't expect to be a concert violinist by any means. It's also an interesting decoration piece, which is a huge plus! So, the instrument itself: I found some good videos online about setting up and tuning a violin (I have been playing guitar for some years, and used to play some other instruments; some of this isn't the newest territory to me) and everything went smoothly. Having never played a violin, I did not expect the tuning pegs needing pressed inward while turning, and at first I wondered why the strings didn't hold tune. That was on me. But I learned there are also products for lubricating the tuning pegs made specifically for classical stringed instruments, which might aid in the process. It tuned up nicely. How is the sound? Well, it makes some. That is, beginner me isn't going to sound like experienced-someone-else, but I imagine in time, my ability will improve, the rosin will settle into the bow, and it'll sound better. Again, this is to learn some violin stuff on. The kit comes with everything you need to get started. If you or someone you know wants to learn, absolutely consider this instead of jumping into a much more expensive instrument. It'll be great for longer than you may expect! ... show more

For 90 bucks I wasn't expecting much. But one of the strings was detached and wouldn't go back on. Also the tension wouldn't work properly. Definitely not worth the money. Returned it the same day I got it.
