NO, the barb on the output is not useless as on reviewer stated. The barb on the output will allow you to connect it to a drip stake with a short length of tubing. The water will follow the drip stake and help get water deep into the plants root system. This method is perfect for container gardening. You can of course, connect a drip stake to an emitter without a barb, but you'll have to use a zip tie or clamp to make sure the tubing doesn't come off the dripper... even taking these measures won't guarantee the tubing won't come off... they just aren't designed to be used that way. I bought these last year and they seemed to work OK initially. The next year I am close to 100% failure. Look elsewhere if you intend to get more that 1 season out of your drippers. Its a lot of work and money to replace every single one of them. Disappointed.

I have my entire season's growing items in grow bags as my soil is horrendous (sand and hardpan clay). Trying to water regularly by hand would take forever, so I purchased an irrigation system kit and put together the larger tubing cut to accommodate the larger pieces with pegs that the thin hose fits onto and that also fits onto this drip emitter. I also have a timer on the hose so that the irrigation system comes on at the scheduled times. So these drip emitters work well enough - I have no issue with them but wanted to be able to adjust the head like I can with the stake style "fountain" sprayers. I have them dialed so that they cover the top of the grow bag's surface and that allowed my seeds to pop up quickly. If I had a greenhouse set up with some larger plants already established, these drip emitters would be perfect as I could position them near the base of the plant to ensure the water gets down deep near the taproot. I do like these and will use them for the right plantings. ... show more

We have a raised flowerbed around the back wall of our backyard, and we have roses and blueberries and various other plants in there. Each plant has its own emitter, and we put in the drip system as we were planting originally. We've started adding plants and needed some more emitters. I have not tested all 50 in the package, but the first 3 we've tried work really well. I also haven't checked to see if they are really half a gallon per hour, but they let enough water through in 15 minutes for each plant, and the pressure isn't so high that it washes away the soil. I have a large drip system which often has emitters that fail. I got these droppers to replace old ones that were not working or were working improperly and so far they have worked well.
