Works great -- how come I'm just finding out about these now?
I received this warmer along with a Zippo lighter as a birthday gift. And what a gift they are! I've never heard of/seen these before and wish I'd come across them years ago. I live in Florida, so that might explain it. My body struggles to stay warm often, so this warmer is quite a blessing. It just so happened that I was out of town this weekend, first real cold front of the year, my friends decided to take me to a restaurant with outdoor seating, and I hadn't quite packed warm enough clothing. Zippo hand warmer to the rescue! I only put 6 hrs' worth of Zippo fluid into it and it ended up going for 12 hours. Even though I only had one, it kept me comfortably warm. A few observations: 1) Take your time in filling it up, as it's easy to fill it too fast and have it spill. Wipe off the extra and wait a minute for the excess to evaporate. 2) The instructions say you're supposed to use 2x the fuel the first time you use the unit. See #1 -- I tried putting fuel in too fast and ended up spilling a bit, which ignited on me when I went to warm the burner. Not a big deal -- just blow it out. Still, it was a bit exciting for a few seconds. 3) The warmer put off a noticeable burning charcoal lighter-fluid smell on the first burn. Subsequent burns haven't produced this. 4) It's best to let the unit get up to temperature by leaving it UPRIGHT outside of the pouch for a good 5-10 minutes until it gets almost too hot to touch, then put it in the pouch. It'll stay nice & warm from that point forward. I've occasionally had it lit, then set it down flat only to find that it had extinguished itself. I finally figured out that laying it sideways was sending liquid into the catalyst, quenching it. The catalyst works on vapor, not liquid. 5) After refueling, wait at least a minute after attaching the burner before trying to light it. The catalyst works by oxidizing the vapors from the fuel. Giving the vapors time to permeate the burner will make lighting much easier and faster. 6) In the initial stages (after filling, after lighting), I find it helps to prop the burner upright to help get the fuel vapors rising into the catalyst. 7) If the burner and/or cover aren't fitting tightly, you can squeeze the edges closer together with your hands/fingers. I've not had a problem with the burner popping off like other reviewers had, but I did tighten mine up to be on the safe side. I'm planning on buying a second unit, so I can have one in each pocket. *** Update 11/19/2013 *** Okay, so I've since bought a second one and have had the chance to use these about 10 times now. They definitely get easier to light after the first 1-2 times. I'm still getting ~12 hrs out of "6 hours" worth of fuel according to the little Zippo fuel filler cup. I've also tossed these in the bed a few times as well on the cooler nights when I didn't feel like turning the central heat on. I also notice that there's virtually no smell from them when they're going unless you have them right up near your face. I'm really surprised at just how well these work at keeping me warm, and I do get chilled very easily. In times when I'd normally need a jacket, these keep me plenty comfortable without. I also have to say that they get plenty warm. I'm not sure how/why people aren't getting plenty of heat out of them -- I get plenty, enough that the warmer can't be held comfortably in my hand without being inside the felt pouch.

Zippo hand warmer
In terms of size, this warmer is just about right for my medium sized hands. The unit comes with a warning sticker attached that does not come off cleanly, leaving behind a sticky residue, so you might want to have some adhesive remover handy. The burner on mine had a nice snug fit. The fit on the lid was decent, but by squeezing it a bit to bend the metal, I was able to make it tighter. I used Ronsonol lighter fluid as it is available in local stores in my area. Although it is much more expensive in my area ($5.29 for 12 oz) than others have reported, it still comes out cheaper than the disposable hand warmers in terms of cost per hour of heat. For the first use, I filled the included dispenser to the halfway point, which is supposed to be enough for 6 hours. I found nothing in the instructions about filling it twice the first time as some people have mentioned, so maybe they've changed that. The instructions do say, however, that the burner and absorbent material need to be broken in, and so the warmer might not work as long the first time. In spite of this, it did last almost exactly 6 hours even with the warmer out of the bag for a good portion of that time. If I'd kept it in the bag, it probably would have lasted much longer. I had no problem filling the warmer using the included dispenser or in lighting it. I let it run a few minutes before putting it in the bag. When first lit, I could smell the fluid even when it was held a foot or two away. Once placed in the bag, however, it could only be smelled if I put my nose right up to it. I could feel a low amount of heat through the bag with my bare hands, but with gloves on I doubt you would be able to feel it. If I raised it halfway out of the bag to give it more air, it got much warmer. As others have reported, therefore, I don't think the included bag lets in enough air. I next tried the warmer out of the bag, but in a loose pants pocket. I think this is the probably the best way to use it, as a pocket seems to restrict the amount of air just enough. In my case, I could put my bare hand in my pocket and directly touch the metal without it being too hot. I also tried having the warmer out in the open with full access to air, but wearing cotton gloves. This works good as well, as long as you don't need your hands free. After about 3 hours, I could no longer smell the fumes from the fluid even with my nose right up to it. It was also just slightly warm to the touch even out in the open, so I thought it was running out of fuel. By 4 hours, however, it was too hot to touch with bare hands even in a pocket and continued to be hot until almost the very end. I'm hoping that the variability in the amount of heat produced is just due to the break-in process and that it will be more consistent with further use. Overall, I'm quite happy with this hand warmer, although the included bag doesn't seem to be very useful. I might try a cotton bag as some have suggested to see if that lets in more air, or just stuff it in a sock. The bag is a perfect fit for my phone, however, so it won't go to waste.

Provides plenty of warmth
I purchased this about six months ago and it has been serving us well on backpacking trips, chilly walks, and even at a ballgame. It is well worth its extra couple ounces in weight for the morale boost that it provides. The warmer was not a replacement for being dressed warm enough to handle the cold, but it definitely added plenty of warmth each time we used it. The hand warmer has a few quirks to it, that once figured out, made it a great companion. I found the cheapest way to fuel it is using Naphtha instead of regular zippo fluid. I picked up my can of it at a local Home Depot and it will surely last me several cold seasons. We never noticed a fuel smell when using it compared to Zippo fluid or that other yellow bottle stuff. When fueling the unit, be sure that the cotton in the fuel cell is not smashed down or it will prevent the burner from wicking up the fuel. This was the most frustrating part, while learning how to use it. I just used a small twig or toothpick to fluff the cotton back up. It takes a few seconds to light the burner, and a couple of minutes to warm up. I lit it every evening before sundown, threw it in its pouch after I felt the warmth building, and it stayed warm through the night and into the morning on my backpacking trips. I found the sleeve to work perfectly fine. More oxygen=more heat. I had longer burn times when it was a few layers deep in my jacket pocket, compared to a mesh pouch i found that fit it pretty well. There was a significant difference in heat output as well. It is easy to put out. If I didn't need the heat anymore, I just slip it into a ziplock (with its sleeve on as to not melt the plastic) and it will starve itself from oxygen. Just keep in mind that there is still going to be fuel in the unit. I didn't notice it wicking out past the burner and leaking into my backpack, but I kept it sitting upright just in case. I would recommend this product to anyone that wants a morale boost on a cold day. It needs fuel, a lighter, and some patience, but it keeps the frostbite away. I highly prefer the Zippo over the chemical hand warmers. The quality of the heat is so much better with the Zippo hand warmer.

Hot, Lasts Long, Easy, Cost Effective
You will be impressed! And you will more than likely want two of them! This is an amazing product, but only when it is lit properly. First, follow the typical instructions for lighting. I found them online since it didn't come with any. But the instructions will only get you so far because the warmer will only get... well... warm. You want it hot? Here's the trick... Let the warmer sit outside of the pouch to give it plenty of oxygen while it heats up. If you don't do this, it will only get a little warm (which could be what you want if it's not all that cold out). By letting it breathe, it will get hot enough to seriously burn you without its pouch. The more air, the hotter it gets. The down side is that more air uses more fuel, although even in open air this thing goes and goes. I let mine sit outside the pouch for a good 10 to 15 minutes while I'm getting other things taken care of. By the time I pick it up to put it in the pouch, OUCH! Ya, it's very hot. In comparison to the chemical warmers, here are some pro's and con's: Pro's: MUCH cheaper than the cost of the chemical warmers, even when considering the cost of fuel (which is very little). MUCH hotter than the chemical warmers. Better dispersion of the heat... it may be a picky thing, but the manner in which it heats feels considerably different than the chemical warmers. Lasts longer than the chemical types. For those environmentally conscious, it's re-usable... you aren't throwing something in the trash. The chrome finish is very nice, and when the unit is only warm, it has a nice smooth feel out of the pouch. The metal is plenty strong and lightweight. Funny that something so hot could also look so cool. Con's: You have to light it. If you have no lighter or matches, this could be a problem. Side Note - the chemical types need to be shaken to get air in them in order for the chemical reaction to take place and make them reach their potential heat. Once you are used to lighting this, you'll find the lighting process to be a whole lot faster than the chemical shaking process. Another small con is that every once in a while, you will smell a slight scent of fuel (this doesn't happen very often). I love this thing, and if you're cold, you will too! My Personal Use: I am a professional pianist/keyboardist. Often, my hands are cold, and performing with cold fingers can really be a challenge. This warmer completely fixes that. Many years ago, I remembered seeing a school friend bring one of these with him to school. That's how I even knew these existed. Years later, I found the warmers that use a liquid pouch and can be boiled to reset them for another use. After those wore out, I began using the chemical warmers. I wasn't fully satisfied with either of those two methods, so I bought this. Other than to use the chemical warmers in my winter boots, this warmer is all I need and it exceeds my demanding expectations.

Best handwarmer I've found: I bought two!
I've been using small disposable chemical handwarmers for decades, but even two of them in the same mitten is not enough to keep my hands warm when the temps drop below zero. And I use very good REI mittens with a water & windproof outer shell and wear glove liners as well. But I am also frequently shooting pictures and exposing my hands to the cold. Glove liners don't provide any thermal protection then. Although I went to routinely using two chemical warmers in each mitten, they just don't put out enough heat for sub-zero conditions. I tried the Zippo and it is MUCH hotter. And since it is burning fuel, it STAYS hot. Zippo claims up to 12 hours for a full fill. I tested it at home first and 12 hours later it was still hot. Warning: when using it for the first time, be sure to use Zippo brand fuel and follow the instructions EXACTLY. If the catalyst gets covered with soot from your lighter it can be brushed off with a toothbrush or rag. It needs to be clean to work. Pros: compact, will fit in a mitten between the shell and the mitten itself, lightweight, you can still use ski poles with the warmer in the mitten, stays hot as long as the fuel lasts. Works well even at -20 F. Cons: difficult to ignite the catalyst except in calm air when using a regular lighter (high temp torch lighters aren't recommended because they can destroy the catalyst). Really works best with Zippo brand fuel, which is expensive. Military folks should buy their Zippo fuel at the Exchange! Another con is that the catalytic burner can dislodge if the warmer is dropped or subjected to rough knocks. Then it has to be relit. Caution: you can burn yourself with this warmer so heed the instructions!

Works Well. Produces Fuel Odor. Mildly Warm. Good as Last Resort . I recommend the Solid Fuel Stick Warmer Instead.
works as indicated. it is just a warmer and not a heater so it doesn't produce a lot of heat inside the pocket but enough to knock of the chill. *pro's: it works good, it's Zippo quality, it's good to keep around just in case of emergency last resort. *con's: does produce a fuel odor lit or not. very hot outside of the pouch but not in the pouch (probably a safety feature. it is a bit difficult to fill without spilling a bit. being liquid fuel you have to be careful when storing to prevent leakage. and it takes a bit too long for me to get it lit. if by chance you needed to light in wind, it would be very difficult. would I recommend? yes, Only as a last resort warmer BUT I would rather have a solid fuel source hand warmer.

Great for snowboarding!
EDIT 12/31/10: I exchanged the stock burner for a new one and it burns much better. I've also been trying different types of lighter fluid with it. Zippo Lighter Fluid Pro: Burns clean Little to no smell Last around the estimated time Cons: More expensive Ronsonal Lighter Fluid Pros: Burns way longer then estimated time (used a full measuring cup and it lasted 20 hours vs 12 advertised or 12-12 hours for zippo) Cheaper than Zippo Can be found at Walgreens/CVS Cons: Has a more distinct fuel smell (not all the time) Left residue/gunk around the burner area? Not sure why. I bought this just in time for snowboarding season. It's a great little hand warmer. I actually place it in my chest pocket while I'm riding and it warms up my entire jacket. I leave it in my pocket without the carrying bag because it burns hotter. Be careful handling the warmer when it's not in the bag because it can be very hot. The bag is meant to limit the amount of oxygen going to the warmer not just a bag to put it in. The more oxygen the warmer gets the hotter. Comes with a drawstring bag that I feel could have been a little better. Sometimes too thick to feel heat. The heat is inconsistent at times. The picture is not accurate. When I ordered it, it only came with the hand warmer, measuring cup, and carrying bag. NO FUEL INCLUDED! The brass piece in the catalytic burner came apart after first use. But snapped back into place. Some catalytic material might have fallen out as a result. Might look at investing on more burners (from ebay I didn't see any on Amazon). Pro: Great for snowboarding/skiing Lasts longer than estimated time in manual Looks really cool Impress your friends by showing them how hot it can get Cons: Buying fuel can be pricier than the one time use hand warmers Inconsistent heat at times Might have to buy new burners... Overall: Great product. It produces good heat for a long time. Can be pricey for to continue using it (fuel, burners which need to be replaced every couple of years or when they break)

It Works Really Well if your remember your Fire Triangle -- Fuel + Heat +Oxygen = Fire/Combustion
I was looking for a Jon E hand warmer and was disappointed to find out they are no longer produced. So I purchased the Zippo along with the Zippo fuel. I read through the reviews regarding performance. If you look at Larry and Lurchie's reviews, they are spot on on how to fill, light and use the hand warmer. I propped the hand warmer upright and removed the burner. I measured Zippo lighter fluid to the top line of the measuring cup. I then slowly filled the warmer by placing the nozzle of the measuring cup into the wadding pressing down while slowly pouring the lighter fluid allowing the wadding to absorb the fluid. I waited about 2 minutes allowing the lighter fluid to begin vaporizing. I put the burner back on. I then used a butane grill lighter and heated up the metal outside of the burner assembly for about 15 seconds. I then placed the flame into the catalyst inside the burner assembly for about 5 seconds. I did this procedure twice, shut the lights and saw that the burner was glowing red. I waited about 2-3 minutes and then put on the hand warmer cover. I then waited about 5 minutes and the hand warmer was working well. I placed it into its cloth bag and left the drawstring open so it still got a good amount of air. Once the entire hand warmer got hot it was vaporizing the lighter fluid even more because of the heat. Its been about two hours and the hand warmer is really hot. I was a fire science major in college and learned about the chemistry of fire. The fire triangle from grade school is actually a fire tetrahedron once you get to college...Fire (combustion) = Fuel+Heat+Oxygen+the Uninterrupted Chain Reaction. It's basic chemistry, be patient and you will enjoy your Zippo Hand Warmer (even though it isn't the Jon E I grew up with)!
