I don’t typically write reviews for things I like, or don’t like. If I take the time to write down my opinion it’s generally to complain about truly being disappointed or on rare occasions, like this one, truly amazed. Having my expectations exceeded is a rarity, one in which I’m willing to put my time and words to paper - or screen. This, this is one of those exceptional experiences- and I can’t believe it’s over a mattress of all things. Buying a mattress shouldn’t be hard, but it is. It’s made harder by today’s advertising and BS. We no longer know what the best way is to buy the thing we’ve bought our whole life. Are we being ripped off? The answer is of course yes; but how do we solve that? The answer in this case is Zinus. Perhaps embarrassingly, I put more research into my latest mattress purchase than I did my last car. Maybe because it’s such a personal purchase and one you live with for such a long period of time. What you sleep on, and how you sleep, matters. A decade ago I bought my last mattress. It was a good mattress. It was very expensive. It served me well… for a few years. I extended it’s life far past it’s usefulness by adding memory foam and padding and then again by telling myself it was sufficient, for years. After at least a year of restless nights which I attributed to other causes I finally admitted to myself I needed a new bed. What a pain, literally. This began my research into what to buy and from where. If you’re looking at a Zinus then you’ve undoubtedly looked at the other major players in this category. They’ve sprung up all in the last couple of years because of one major reason - mattress sales are a scam. Unfortunately, so are online mattress sales for the most part. After a lot of research which you can do in your own time using Google, nearly all these ‘online mattress companies’ are actually made in the same factory using nearly identical material. They all add in their own exclusive features but they are mostly the same. The major difference being the name on the box it’s shipped in. Zinus is considerably cheaper than the rest. It is nearly identical to the rest. It’s cheaper because they lower their markup. It really is that simple. The big players in this game pretend to offer a great deal but then markup their mattress by 300% or more. Ask yourself why they can afford to let you sleep on it for 3 months, then pay someone to come to your house and take it to the landfill if you don’t want to keep it. They would literally rather pay someone to throw it away than to take it back. That’s how inexpensive it is for them to make them. The markup is so much that their product becomes disposable. This doesn’t mean they are bad mattresses. In fact, all those name brand online retailers sell great mattresses, nearly identical to the Zinus. They are just incredibly overpriced. Now my review - my mattress rant is over. I hope some find it useful. I bought the ‘Zinus Memory Foam 12 Inch / Premium / Ultra Plush / Cloud-like Mattress, King’. With it I also bought the platform bed from Zinus - also because of the incredible price and which I’ll also review. (spoiler, it’s fantastic) The mattress comes compressed in a box of course. That’s how it works. Unlike some other manufacturers it fully uncompresses and is ready for sleep on day 1. There is no chemical smell because it’s not treated with the same nasty chemicals that some other manufacturers put on theirs. I’ve read a lot of ‘explanations’ from the other makers as to why they fill theirs with chemicals, none of which are convincing. My guess, is so that they can sit in warehouses for years and not get moldy. This is without a doubt the most comfortable mattress I’ve ever slept on. If it’s comfortable to you will of course depend on what your definition of comfort is. Zinus makes several different mattresses in varying degrees of firmness. I just happened to luck out buying the right one for me the first time, I think. This one is firm, but giving. It’s the kind of mattress where I can roll around on one side and it doesn’t effect my partner on the other side. You don’t feel movement unless it’s right up against you. At the same time it gives slightly, making it very conforming to your body. One of the most important things to me as a person who is generally hot all the time is that it stay cool, and this does. I didn’t realize it until I got this mattress but I believe one of my issues for such a long time, was being hot. I get no heat from this mattress at all. As an example of just how comfortable this mattress is, having not slept in it yet, I also purchased a very expensive and beautiful down mattress topper along with very beautiful, thick, luxurious sheet set. Ultimately I ended up sending all that back because honestly sleeping on the mattress itself with no other bedding under me save a thin fitted sheet is unbelievably comfortable. You’ll want as little as possible between you and the mattress. I’m not sure what I can say that would be more complimentary than that. I’ve had the mattress for a few months now and it really has been life changing. Not in a ‘save the world’ kind of way - but it has saved my sleep. I sleep well, and for the first time in years. A good bed makes a good difference. I’ve been a tad evangelical about this review only because it’s made such a positive improvement in my life- and for far less money than the alternatives. A few tips: Put your mattress on a VERY firm surface. This isn’t your old traditional mattress, you do not want it on a bed springs. If you can’t buy a platform bed now, put it on the floor. Do not add a bed topper even though your experience with your old mattress may incline you otherwise. Sleep as close to the mattress as you can. No topper, thin sheets. If you don’t believe you can buy a great mattress for hundreds less, buy the more expensive ones first (I did). There is no risk in comparison. Those other brands let you send it back within 90 days at no cost. Buy it, send it back, then buy the Zinus and compare. You can also easily send this back. I’d be absolutely shocked if anyone says they went with the more expensive brand after a comparison. I’m glad you spent the time to read this review. Now, do your research, compare, and buy this mattress.

Update: I already own this mattress but love it so much I bought one for the ‘guest’ room at my parents... mainly because I stay with my parents when I’m in town for work and sleep in my childhood bedroom where my parents put their older queen sized mattress that would literally leave my back in the worst pain, was sinking in the middle and just uncomfortable. Maybe I’m more concerned with myself and my comfort, regardless, I bought the 10” queen version of this mattress for Christmas (for my parents but more for me when I’m here) to replace the current... which is where I’m laying and typing this updated review. I’m going to sleep so good tonight. Also, I’m not that selfish... I bought my parents nice things aside from this mattress lol ——————— I bought the 12” full — I don’t know what it’s like to sleep on a cloud but if I could imagine sleeping on its heavenly goodness, this bed is it. It is SO comfortable and I actually sleep solid through the night and I don’t even feel my dogs walking on it as they like to move around during the night and it used to wake me. That top layer is just squishy goodness but underneath lies all the support. Prior to this bed I had a pillow top Serta perfect sleeper, it was a great bed and served its purpose but this bed is better because you don’t have to deal with coil springs. Some people have mentioned an odor... which I did not encounter the first day but after about 2 days I did notice it, however, I figured out what it’s from. The mattress itself is foam and needs time to air out and rise like a loaf of bread because it is delivered compressed. I had my mattress on the floor which doesn’t allow for maximum air flow or the air to flow through/escape as needed... so when I lay on the bed, essentially my body weight is forcing the air back down through the mattress and trapping it not allowing for things to air out or escape anywhere. My advice would be to order base/platform when you order the mattress or before so you can roll your mattress out on it and allow the air to escape as needed to really air out. Unfortunately I ordered mine after (Zinus 18inch smart frame) but UPS delivered it to the wrong address, so I missed out and have been waiting a week for the whole turn around process of getting another. It’ll all work out. This bed is worth it, like I said... make sure it’s on an elevated base to allow ample airflow. I’m hoping the smell will go away once I get it on the platform.

I was definitely leery about buying a mattress online. I went to Sam's Club, Mattress Warehouse, Bedding Barn, yadda yadda, and tried a million different mattresses. All of them were lovely, but none of them were cheap. Is this bed stellar? I wouldn't call it that. But it is a wonderful bed for someone who really doesn't want to spend much more than 200$ on a mattress, and someone who certainly doesn't want to try to haul a huge ass mattress on the top of her little Ford Fiesta. PROS - 1. Cheap. 2. Cheap. 3. Cheap. Seriously, where the hell else are you gonna get a decent mattress for this price? 4. It comes to your house in a box. You open the box, open a bunch of bags, and the mattress gloriously unfolds for you. After having moved sofas and tables and desks and lamps into my apartment, it was MAGICAL to have something normally so bulky arrive and take pretty much zero work to set up. 5. It's a good mattress. I've had it for almost a month now, I sleep well, there's no noticeable comfort issues. Many of the negative reviews I read mentioned that it was too firm, firmer than they were expecting. I think that's because when people think memory foam, they think Temperpedic. See the con section below for more on that, but given all of the complaints about the firmness I was pleasantly surprised with the softness of it. It's firmer than I like, but it does kind of contour to your body. Also, unlike Temperpedic, this mattress doesn't trap all of your body heat! I hate waking up sweaty so this was a huge plus. CONS - 1. Smallest con ever: it smells funny for like, 10 minutes after you get it. Really not a big deal though. 2. Do not expect this mattress to be a Temperpedic. If you've done any research on mattresses, you'll know that cheaper memory foam mattresses use a cheaper, different density foam than the fancy ass Temperpedics. (If you haven't done research yet, I suggest the Sleep Like the Dead website.) The skinny on these mattresses is that they run firm. And yes, this bed is firmer than I prefer. But see the PRO section above for why this doesn't matter to me that much. 3. Now I don't know this first hand, but I have heard that there's really not much you can expect in the way of customer service from this company. And honestly, if you order a bed-in-a-box like this, open it and find out 2 weeks later you really don't like it, what are you going to do? You can't ship it back, because there's no way you can squeeze the mattress back into the box. So I'd suggest trying out a bunch of mattresses, making sure that you're okay with something like this, I would say softer than a firm pillowtop, but firmer than a high density memory foam mattress like Temperpedic. Be REALLY sure you want to buy this before you place an order. ALL IN ALL - This is a good, budget mattress. Generally speaking with mattresses you get what you pay for, but I would say this is a really good deal.

This review is after about 3 months of usage. In short, simply blown away! This is by far the best 'thing' I've ever slept on. From floors to air pads, dorm room bunks, blow-up mattresses, dingy motels, and 5-star hotels - you name it, I've slept on (or in) it. In detail, I'm 6'5", 180lbs and went with the queen 8" mattress for me and the full 4" mattress for my daughter. I slept on a luxury queen pillow top mattress and box spring for the last 6 years. We moved into a new place and I decided to use these mattresses temporarily while I took the time to test out my next long term set. On morning number one, for both my daughter and I, we couldn't stop talking about how insanely comfortable the mattresses were. Here are some factors that coincide with my experience. With my Garmond health monitor, I could see a distinct positive difference in my deep sleep cycle between the previous mattress and this Zinus Sleep Master. I used to fall asleep with books, magazines, remote control on the bed next to me and wake up with them on the floor. Now, they stay right where I left them. I may roll over once or twice but I usually wake up in the same position I fell asleep in and when I wake up, I'm awake! It's almost scary to realize how much of my life went by without this kind of rest. I did read a ton of comments and the ones that cause most concern I'll compare. First, the packaging was fine. The box is big and bulky but I could carry it up 2 flights of stairs without rest or the need for help. The mattress comes vacuum sealed in a thick plastic wrap. Be careful slicing it open as it's tight on the mattress and you can accidentally cut the removable (and washable) zippered wrap or even into the mattress itself. Regarding the odor that people have noted in other comments. There was a factory/chemical/plastic smell. I'd have to say something closer or comparable to a very light 'new car' smell. Like anything new I wear or sleep under, I washed the thin zippered wrap by itself and dried it once. I've always put a couple dryer sheets on a mattress when I change sheets and did so again with the Zinus mattress. There was no chemical smell after washing the wrap and I'm actually in bed now laying on it while writing this review and there's no smell at all. There was no mold anywhere to be seen. It's unfortunate that people experienced it and I'm not sure if it's a factory issue or a storage issue. Both mattresses came vacuum sealed in heavy plastic - heavy enough to keep the mattress compressed until it was removed from the box AND cut open. I didn't see it mentioned whether or not the mattress seal was broken or the box it came in had any damage. I'd be turned off as well if I saw that kind of mold and wouldn't buy again but having slept on it - It's worth returning for a new one in my opinion. It did take several hours to uncompress. No more than 24 hours for the 4" and 8" sizes but we both slept on them the same evening and experienced an incredible sleep. I did purchase two collapsible smart frames (another great purchase I'll have to review later). There's literally no need for a box spring in my setup as the smart frames are high and built to use bins underneath for storage. As is, they would replace your current mattress and sit on top of your current box spring. My daughter had a fruit punch Gatorade (red) that was not sealed all the way in her soccer bag. It leaked into the center of the mattress about a month ago. To clean, we used a little detergent and warm water to saturate the spot and pressed a towel down to absorb it. Repeated until there was no red coming up but there is a noticeable red stain (as there would be on any mattress I'm sure). What made it easy to absorb is that you can push down into the mattress without air or spring coils so saturating the spot with clean water and detergent really got the bulk Gatorade out. In the future, I would get the 12" for myself (because I enjoy a high bed) and the 8" can go to the guest room. I'll be getting another 4" full size for the pull out sofa mattress and I'll get my daughter a 4" twin when she goes off to college.

This review is for the 10" Queen version of the ZInus Ultimate Comfort mattress. I chose this particular model for several reasons. First, it is manufactured by Zinus. Now, Zinus does not have the name recognition of Tempur-Pedic, nor the same high-end reputation, or prices. Various Amazon sellers sell at on of assorted Zinus mattresses under a bunch of names, and they mostly get very good reviews. This model, a 10" Queen featuring 3 inches of memorey foam over "2 inches Pressure Relieving Comfort Foam," on top of 5 inches of higher-density base foam, appears to be identical to other brands that receive 4+ star ratings over numerous sales here. Add to this the fact that this particular listing was both shipped by and sold by Amazon, and I felt I couldn't go wrong. And, of course, my innerspring mattress was 15 years old and needed to replaced. I received the mattress only today, and have only slept on it for a few hours, and will update this after a few weeks and maybe later. Prime 2-day shipping didn't fail me, and the 65 lb box was dropped right next to my house by FedEx. I handled the box fine myself but it was a little bigger than expected and without any handles, and a lot of people will definitely need help to move it up any stairs, if not move it all. Neatly packed, nothing extra, no cushioning needed. Some reviews of memory foam mattresses led me to believe they can take 24-48 hours to fully expand from their compressed shipping state. Others caution you to have the mattress at least near where you will ultimately sleep on it before you unwrap it. The second bit of advice is definitely worth mentioning; mine expanded and unfolded rapidly, reaching near-full dimensions in seconds. After wrestling it of the floor (I should have opened the plastic with it on the platform), I measured its height at 9 inches. Two hours later I found it a full 10 inches high. It is also a full 60 x 80, unlike many mattresses on Amazon that are undersized at 58 x 78 inches. That is a big deal to me - I want all of the 80 inch length a proper queen mattress provides, and filling out standard sheets without them being loose or baggy is a must. I have not had a full night's sleep as of this review, but I did take a quick nap, which turned into a very long nap. It is comfortable. This mattress cradles me enough, yet is still firm enough to be supportive. Time will tell, but my initial impressions of this mattress are that it will be great to sleep on, and that it is a real bargain. Update after 3.5 years: I love this mattress! I had concerns about the durability of a $230 mattress, but it is still perfectly comfortable and is holding up well. It is certainly on the firmer side, which was what I had hoped for, though it is soft enough to cushion my 190+ pound self very well. I've noticed none of the problems some reviewers mention: it doesn't "sleep hot," there was no off-gassing or strong smell, and the cover is just fine. I have no regrets about buying this mattress. When considering how much money I saved on it, it's easy to think maybe I should go ahead and replace it since it's been more than worth the price and is a few years old now. But it still shows little wear and looks like it should be fine for several more years. Note that sheets made for taller mattresses are commonly available these days, and sheets designed for a 14" mattress will fit loosely, but that's not this mattress's fault - it's solid (enough).

Update April 2024 - Still using it and no complaints. I spin it around from time to time. I added a 3" foam topper this winter for added squishy since the matter is a little firm. I'm about 170 lbs. No problems. My guy is a body builder with 3x shoulders and he's even comfortable on it!! The only issue is that he sinks down further, which means the sheet slips off and the elastic catched under the foam topper. Not a big deal at all. I paid $190 total. Money very well spent!! Update January 9, 2022 - Still in love with my mattress. The price has gone up significantly (I paid $177 for queen 10 inch), but I'd still purchase this over a traditional $1500+ set. I've kept a waterproof cover on it, so the foam has never been exposed to sweat, oils, or dead skin cells. It's held up INCREDIBLY well. I turned it around last year because it was developing a trough where I lay. It's fine now. I see myself getting a few more years out of it. I love that it doesn't transfer motion, so I still don't feel my dog moving around at night. Best purchase I've made on Amazon! Update - November 27, 2018 - I'm still blown away by this mattress. I weigh about 160 lbs, and after nearly 2 yrs there isn't a noticeable dip where I sleep. So incredibly comfortable. It's firm, but gives, which makes no sense until you lay on one. I'll definitely purchase another one in a few years when this one needs replaced. Can't beat the quality or price. I've waited a week so that I could give a better review after having slept on it a little while. Best money I've spent in a long time. I bought the 10" so that my sheets would still fit. It inflated about 90% the first 2 hours and finished up during the night. My favorite thing about the mattress is that it doesn't transfer motion. I sleep alone with a 35 lb dog. Normally I feel her jumping on and off the bed during the night, as well as changing positions, scratching, etc. I don't feel any of that movement now, which has resulted in being able to stay in a deep sleep longer. I wake up sometimes totally confused about where I am or what day it is because I've slept so well. This is coming from someone who is a horrible sleeper. It's been years since I had a good nights sleep. Until I bought this mattress!! I've been ridiculously focused and productive this week, and I realized yesterday that it has happened since I made the purchase. Related? Not sure, but it seems like it. A chronic lack of sleep has effects on a person, so it stands to reason that finally sleeping fairly well has allowed my body to operate normally again. The mattress seems well made. The cover is zippered. I'll buy a waterproof cover for it since that prolongs the life. Not that I pee in the bed lol, but it catches all of the dead skin cells and dirt. Walmart has one with a soft quilted top for about $25. Buy something like this to protect your investment! I hope it lasts many years, but even if I just get 2 yrs out of it, it'll be worth it.

This is the second most comfortable mattress I've ever slept on. The first most comfortable cost me $3000 about 15 years ago. Before I got this mattress I was only sleeping a few hours a night due to the pain I was in due to the mattress I was sleeping on. I actually look forward to going to bed at night now and I'm waking up totally refreshed and the aches and pains are completely gone. I'm totally shocked that a $300 mattress could actually be this good of quality. My husband rarely dishes out a compliment but the day afer I first slept on my new mattress when he got home from work he said, Wow, you look refreshed, you don't have that tired look that you always have. That was nice of him but more importantly I felt refreshed. I'm a side sleeper due to a back injury and I've woken up a few times on my back on this mattress and amazingly my back wasn't hurting like it would have been on the other mattress I'd been sleeping on. I do have to say that I could smell the off gas for about a week and the mattress was making me feel hot but I took care of that problem by putting a down comforter on top of it. Every foam mattress or topper I've ever slept on makes me hot so it could just be me. I couldn't love this mattress more and so do my kids. So muchso that two of them are buying one. I let anybody who comes over lay on my new mattress so they can see what they can get for $300. Anybody who's laid on it is amazed and wants one. I bought another brand of a bed in a box before I bought this one for a lady I take care of and I won't mention brands but it does not compare as far as comfort and support go. It's even much lighter than this mattress. It's basically a flimsy piece of foam. This one is heavy and durable. The quality is obvious compared to the other one. I was worried when I ordered this mattress without trying it out first because I like a soft mattress but I need the firmness for the support. I am pleasantly surprised that this mattress is both. I'd already checked google and knew this was the brand I wanted but wasn't sure which style or thickness to get. I decided that if I wanted the sleeping on a cloud like feeling my best chances were with this one. I thought about getting the cooling mattress but figured that if the mattress was to hot I could do something but if it wasn't comfortable there wouldn't be my much I could do about it. I put a lot of research and thought into it before I bought this mattress and I'm glad I did. Ultimately I went with my gut feelings and got this one. Like I said I couldn't be more happy with my choice to buy this mattress. This is the only review I've ever written on a product or anything but to be honest I've never had $300 change my life so much and thought I should share.

UPDATE (30 OCTOBER 2016) On the plus side, as the chemicals in these mattresses evaporate, the mattress seems to get a whole heck of a lot lighter; but, on the downside, it appears to get firmer over time, even after many months (almost a year)---perhaps the latter is because the middle foam section of the mattress is "wearing out" much too quickly(?); I don't know. (End of update) ORIGINAL REVIEW I had both my hopes for, and my doubts about, this mattress (8-inch); and, aside from a couple of now apparent downsides which have become evident after having slept on it for about one month, it has pretty much met my expectations. One of my primary observations is: Thank Goodness I didn't get the six inch one! Also, for being nothing but foam, it weighs a frigging ton both before and after it is unpacked! (Heck, I think it weighs as much as my regular, non-foam queen size mattress!) So, if you've got a bad back, forget about it, wear your low-back brace before working with it, and/or get some help to expand it and move it around! See my further feedback, as follows: PROS Well packaged and shipped Relatively easy to unpackage Expands nicely upon being spread out Nice cover over the entire thing Looks attractive once fully expanded CONS Both package and mattress itself are extremely heavy Not the easiest item to unpackage and expand Very difficult to maneuver around and into place (Being nothing but foam I thought it would be a lot lighter) Appears to get firmer the longer it is exposed to air After the recommended 48-hours to allow it to fully expand before using it, I began sleeping on this mattress immediately, and every night since, and I have found it to be relatively comfortable. Being that the six inch one (not the one I purchased; I purchased the eight inch one) only has the two-inch memory foam which pretty much compresses down to nothing with weight on it, on top of the four-inch firm foam with nothing else in between (no other section of foam), it is my belief that the six-inch version of this mattress would be much too firm, especially since the eight-inch version, the one I purchased, has turned out to be pretty firm in and of itself. Personally, I believe that the bottom firm section of foam should only be two-inches thick, and then that the next section of foam should be four-inches thick of the medium-density foam, or two 2-inch sections of foam, one firmer but not as firm as the bottom one, and the second one (third one including the bottom foam), on top of it, the medium-density, or less firm version of foam than the one below it, and then the two-inch memory foam topping it off (in other words, designed more like the twelve-inch-thick version of this mattress). It is my belief that this way it would be a lot more comfortable (except for those people who require and/or prefer quite firm mattresses). As I said in my "cons" (my final "con") above, initially, the longer this mattress is exposed to the air, it appears that the chemicals in it cause it to get firmer; so, if you don't want a pretty-firm mattress, I would not recommend this one. I have a very bad back (though it could be worse; and, thank God, it isn't) and sleep mostly on my sides (I can't sleep on my back or stomach without making my low-back worse), and I find this mattress to be a bit too firm for me; but, like my back, it could be worse; so, it's probably pretty much as good as I could have expected it to be, and I am very glad, appreciative and grateful that this mattress isn't even firmer than it is. Thus, for me anyway, the moral of the story is that this mattress would be much better for me if it wasn't as firm as it is (my shoulders and neck still get sore during sleep, and are still sore in the mornings upon arising); and I really don't want to add a two-inch, non-memory-foam "topper" to it; because, without an extremely over-sized fitted bottom sheet (which probably don't exist), it would move around too much; and, even if I did add a two-inch-thick piece of "topper" foam, using a "deep" fitted bottom sheet, that added foam would probably still move around too much. But, perhaps now that this mattress has had a chance to be exposed to the air for a month, rather than getting even firmer, it will "break-in" over time and at least get a little less firm with further use? I sure hope so, because it certainly needs to be not quite as firm as it is! Since I live and sleep alone, I am breaking this mattress in as evenly as possible by rotating my body and sleeping position every night to a different position, or one of the five positions, or sections, of the mattress, primarily the main three, right, left and center (not necessarily in that order), and then the two sections in between those three. In the long run it should make the mattress more comfortable as it breaks it in more and more, breaking it in evenly, and make certain that, though the memory foam keeps it from showing, the mattress doesn't develop sagged spots, indentations, soft-spots, compressed and/or worn out sections that one's body tends to want to roll towards and that don't provide good, sufficient support, thus causing (more?) bodily discomfort and/or pain. In summary, this mattress may or may not be for you. [I must say, though, that it is MUCH better than sleeping on the three, worn out 2-inch-thick pieces of foam that I was using on top of my regular queen size mattress before(!)---I now have this new mattress also on top of the regular (eight-inch-thick) queen size mattress; and, though it is (much?) too high (sixteen inches thick from the top of my platform, which is high as it is, it is working out acceptably; but, though I have thought about removing the regular mattress from underneath the new one, I'm concerned that then the new mattress would be even firmer {and much too firm?}, and unacceptably firm, if I did so; therefore, I am leaving it as it is, at least for now {it is a little difficult to "climb" onto the bed, but it's not too bad!}).] What else can I tell you?
