Description
The Zero Tolerance 0470 is a sleek, clean and practical style designed by custom knife maker Dimitri Ninkovich. Knife enthusiasts will immediately notice Ninkovich's signature style, as well as the unique “marbled” carbon fiber insert on the front handle. To make this carbon fiber, the fibers are dropped randomly onto the manufacturing plate, then resin is added to secure the fibers and provide a smooth surface. ZT combines the marbled carbon fiber with titanium to give the 0470 a handle that’s both strong and lightweight. The premium blade is CPM 20CV high-chromium stainless steel. This powdered metallurgy tool steel has a high volume of vanadium carbides for exceptional wear resistance and a truly long-lasting edge. A high level of chromium gives it excellent corrosion resistance as well. The 0470 has a two-tone, satin-and- stonewashed blade finish that looks handsome, while ZT’s KVT ball-bearing opening and a flipper makes the knife fast and easy to open.

This is my first ZT knife, and I am really impressed by the craftsmanship that was put into this knife. I own several Benchmade knives--at least a dozen of them-- and the ZT 0470 is just like a Benchmade Gold Class edition. The fit and finish is nothing less than perfect. There is no sideways play with the blade and ,at least with the one I received, the blade is dead center. The blade is made of the excellent cpm20cv steel which is a highly prized blade material with high corrosion and edge retention properties. The knife is well balanced and feels comfortably in the hand with no "hotspots". Visually, between the sculptured profile and the detailed millwork of the titanium scales and the marbled carbon fiber inlay, the knife is like a piece of visual art that could easily fit as a display in the New York Art Museum . As for the price, it is expensive, but well worth the price. If you are looking for sophisticated and stylish folder that is functional, this knife is defintely worth buying. One last piece of advice, since there are counterfeit knives in the market, always do your due diligence and look and study at how the knife and packaging should appear. I have always had my orders fulfilled by Amazon and have not come across a counterfeit piece, but it does not hurt to know what one is buying, especially with a high price. I have enclosed photos of the knife and its packaging for reference.

I am very happy with the ZT 0470 knife. The craftsmanship is high quality and the knife is good looking and sharp right out of the box. One thing to be aware of is that the detent is strong at first, so it takes some time to break in the flipper action. I flipped it open several times a couple of nights after coming home from work and it loosened up and works very smoothly.

Great all around knife action is almost as good as my zt0460 smooth and this one as pretty much perfect detent. The only issue i had was i went to oil it and the pivot screw had way too much loctite had to put some heat on it to break loose. Beautiful knife and comfortable to carry.

Same as the other ZT knives, this one is also well-built with good craftsmanship, and very light with a sharp edge. However, as others said in their reviews, I am also having issues with the open mechanism. Simply can't open the knife with my left hand, it is not like a flip-opening knife. Considering this is used as a EDC and self-defense knife, can't open the knife in an emergency could cause serious problems.

The fit and finish are exemplary. The function is precise as if it had been hand fitted for a single, custom knife offering. The blade material is CPM 20CV. It receives high marks in all categories of edge retention, corrosion resistance, toughness, and hardness. Truly a modern super steel offering from Crucible. Buy this knife. EDIT - 05/08/2023 ---------------------- It's now been roughly 6 weeks since I purchased this knife and I am saddened to say that this knife has developed significant front-to-back blade play over the past week. I'm now at a point where when I deploy the blade, my lockup is at about 50% engagement (which one would expect to be a spot where the knife would _not_ show any front-to-back play given how much engagement that actually is). That said, the play is so bad now that the lockup has failed on me several times in the past few days. I'm not exactly a hard-use guy (I've not done any prying with this knife, nor am I whittling away at wood or anything like that), but I *have* dropped the knife twice in the 6 weeks I've owned it when taking it out of my pocket. When the knife's held in a proper hammer or sabre grip it feels like it's rock solid (and plenty grippy), but taking it out of your pocket is a slightly different story, as the titanium and carbon fiber scales on the sides are actually pretty slippery. I can only assume one of those drops is the source of such surprisingly significant front-to-back play. ZT has a really interesting system for these Sinkevich knives where the part of the frame lock that actually contacts the blade (to keep it open when it's deployed) is a separate piece of (presumably) steel that (I also presume) is meant to be a consumable, as it can be removed by a screw that goes directly into the lock bar. If this is indeed the case (that that piece was meant to be a consumable) I find it hard to believe it was ZT's intention to have the thing fail every 6 weeks or so. So I don't know if I bought a lemon, or what, but for the price of this knife, it should be able to take a drop or two without developing severe front-to-back play. More importantly, however, it certainly shouldn't be developing the kind of play I'm seeing, because the play is so bad that it's actually failing in some cases. I shouldn't have to feel unsafe when using a knife of this price. I have contacted KAI USA (the parent company of Zero Tolerance and Kershaw Knives) in the hope that they can help me get this issue sorted out. I don't know if that means I'll be receiving a new blade or a new lock bar insert, but I will update my review again once I know how that goes. For now, however, due to the lack of durability, I have to drop another star and my opinion of this item now sits at 3 stars. Attached are 2 images showing the (presumably) consumable insert where the lock bar actually interfaces with the blade and a side view showing the screw that holds that insert in place. ORIGINAL REVIEW (03/26/2023) -------------------------------------- The 0470 is a genuinely beautiful piece of craftsmanship. This is, in my opinion, Sinkevich’s best-looking design to date with its sleek lines, tasteful carbon fiber inlay, attractive (and functional!) grind, and (dare I say it?) gentleman’s knife aesthetic! Seriously, as much as I like ZT’s knives, they’re not the first that come to mind when I think “gentleman’s knife.” I’ll just come out and say it: ZT’s knives tend to look aggressive and intimidating. The 0470 keeps that ZT edge for sure, but I’m not afraid that if I pull it out of my pocket at work that someone is going to wonder if I’m going to hurt someone with the thing. This is a piece of art - a truly beautiful, gentlemanly offering from Sinkevich and Zero Tolerance! It’s manufactured beautifully, too - ZT did an AMAZING job with the machining. All the lines are clean and flow nicely into one another. The jimping is EXCELLENT, the back spacer is both beautiful and grippy, and the titanium scales/handles feel smooth where they should feel smooth (with thoughtful chamfers in places that might otherwise feel like hotspots) and grippy where they should feel grippy (the bottom-third of the front-face has jimping that is actually functionally useful and not just for aesthetics). ZT did an excellent job realizing Sinkevich’s vision for this design with all the attention to detail one would expect for a knife at this price point. This is not always a foregone conclusion these days (I’m looking at you, Benchmade), so kudos to ZT for doing this design justice by manufacturing to excellent tolerances and paying attention to user comfort and usability. The frame lock is bank-vault perfect on the knife I received. I’ve read reviews where some folks have had issues with the lockup being SCARY early (where the frame lock is only engaging *maybe* 5% of the blade), which doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence that the knife will stay safely deployed should force be applied to the spine of the blade, but mine is PERFECT. Lockup has been consistently excellent since day 1 - the frame and the blade have roughly 60% engagement, ensuring the blade - once deployed - isn’t going ANYWHERE until I manually unlock the thing to close it up. The blade (at least on the 0470 I received) has ZERO side-to-side OR front-to-back play when deployed, and was surprisingly slice-y out of the box thanks to its relatively thin stock (0.012” behind the edge) and ZT’s excellent grind. This thing is sharp from choil to tip, no doubt about it. The blade spine appears to be tapered (on the tip-side) such that there’s some meat there. It gives me confidence that if I *have to* use this thing for light prying, the tip isn’t going to immediately snap off. I know some of you will read that and cringe, because pry bars do exist and folding knives tend not to be great prying tools, but it’s comforting to know that if my 0470 is the only tool I have at hand, it can get the job done in a pinch without me having to worry I’m going to break the blade in a potentially irreparable way. The only potential issue I can see some folks having with the 0470 is how difficult it is to deploy if you’re putting ANY pressure on the lock bar at ALL. That might sound obvious, “if you put pressure on the lock bar, the knife is going to be harder to unlock,” but the way the ergos are on this thing, it’s easy accidentally put pressure on the pry bar in most forward-grips (hammer, saber, etc…) with your middle or ring fingers. When you factor in that the flipper tab is surprisingly short, it can be difficult to get good purchase on the tab to overcome any force on the lock bar whatsoever (unless you’re a grizzled woodsman with grown man grip strength as opposed to me with my alabaster delicate hands). That said, if you’re okay with being a little more cognizant of finger placement with this knife than you’d need to be with most other good flipper frame-locks, you’ll find it’s consistently smooth, easy, and FIDGETY FUN to deploy the thing. That KVT ball bearing system is smooth as all get out and VERY snappy. It’s a delight to deploy, and it locks up VERY tightly and securely once it’s deployed. In conclusion, this is an EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT offering from Sinkevich and ZT and I’d recommend it to anyone who wants an EXTREMELY functional/usable knife with high-end blade steel (20CV), excellent ergos, and beautiful, gentleman-tier aesthetics. It maintains that ZT feel without scaring your sensitive neighbors on-sight. Highly recommended, especially at the $240 price point (it was marked down 26% at the time of my purchase), though I can see this offering good value even at the ~$275-300 range.
