It's a heavy duty reel. I can't imagine what the Big Cat XT is like but I felt like the 888 was a better deal. I am replacing a Shakespeare Synergy and I can already tell this reel is so much better. The 25lb Cajun line is so much thinner than the Synergy 20lb test. No more fear of hooking into the monster catfish at my local fishing spot. Update: Today I actually landed two large catfish using the 888 and had no problems. The bait alarm and drag worked great! Love the big handle! ... show more

Reel works great. Caught several catfish with it in the 5 to 10 pound range. Also, hooked one massive turtle by accident. The reel worked flawless, but the huge turtle broke the line while trying to get it on the bank. Don't know how much it weighed, but it snapped 25 pound test line. Nice reel for sure!! I matched this Zebco 888 with a 6'6" MH Uglystik, replaced line with 20lb Trilene XL. I've caught carp in the 20lb range with it, no problem, lots of drag to whip big fish.

So my wife uses these reels and wanted a stronger line. Don't know why they need such a big reel to put heavy line on. It is just too heavy to regularly cast with, does not hold the line after retrieve so it slips out and the line does not flow very freely. Better to take a normal Zebco reel and just replace the line with say 12 or 15lb line. And yes you can put other line on a Zebco. ... show more
