I haven't fished with it yet, but I hooked up a plug and did some casting in my backyard. It seems to cast smoothly, and it reels back in smoothly. It has only one pickup pin. I don't think that will be a problem. It doesn't have any ball bearings at all. The gear ratio is pretty low, and each spin of the handle pulls in about 16 inches of line. In other words, we're not going to be reeling things back in very quickly.

I certainly was not expecting much for a 10 dollar reel and am a little shocked at how good it is. Slapped it on, drove to the local lake and cast all day, placing the lure exactly where I wanted it every time. I am super impressed with both the build and the performance. Skip the 30 40 and 50 dollars models - just grab this and go fishing. It even comes pre-loaded with 14#.

Zebco is a leader in fishing reels. The 404 is strong enough for anyone doing anything. I've caught several 30 pounders with this reel. And for $10 bucks you can't beat it.
