  • Brilliant work. Davis's art is always a pleasure
Brilliant work. Davis's art is always a pleasure. Her personal story merges with a broader examination of society in small and large ways that is touching. There are a few arresting moments that were among the best I ran into all year in any storytelling format. Davis is a very strong colorist, and you might expect to miss that element, but the daily sketches from her journey work very well without coloring. ... show more

  • beautifully illustrated and thoughtful travel diary
I loved the author's drawing and notetaking style. This was one of the best "road trip" memoirs I've read (in quotes because she's not in a car but it still counts as a road trip, right?). A reminder to step outside your comfort zone now and then. Poignant, engrossing, interesting.

  • Wonderful story about humanity and connection
Really touching book; I absolutely loved it! I cried a bit, too. Davis does a wonderful job of conveying what connection with others feels like and the joy and wonder of kindness from strangers. There was a slight page-cutting error towards the end of my book but I feel like that makes it all the more charming. Other than that it arrived in perfect condition. ... show more

  • Wonderful travelogue -- introspective, funny and meaningful. Great drawings too!
I first learned about Davis's You & a Bike & a Road after seeing an excerpt of it on Slate.com and was intrigued. I received the book and was pleased with the cover artwork and even more excited about the in-the-moment illustrations inside. It chronicles Davis's bike journey from Tucson, Arizona to Athens, Georgia, and she profiles big and small things. For example, she draws some flowers that she sees, then the next day she illustrates/describes two kind souls who take her into their home, then we see an illegal Mexican immigrant being apprehended after some time in a culvert. It's clear Davis is drawing/writing in the moment, because a few times she scratches out some of the words, and even journals about not knowing what to draw. It really put me in her shoes -- I have a good sense of what a bike trip like that would entail now -- the good and the bad. I take away one star because I got through the book in less than an hour, and ultimately the journey left me a bit unsatisfied. ... show more

  • LOVE THIS BOOK
Enjoyed all the drawings and following the author on her biking journey. Bought another copy for a gift, and will defnitely be getting more for gifts, everyone should read this book at least once. You can appreciate it even if you are not a serious biker or haven't really been into graphic comic arts books. ... show more

  • Story was fine, amateur drawings
After all the 5 star reviews of this book I thought it was going to be deeply thoughtful or emotional or the illustrations would be amazing . . . and it's just . . . okay. But the illustrations are particularly amateurish.

  • Great summer read - Inspiring!
Very clever and creative book. This book came highly recommended and was not at all what I expected - in a good way! Eleanor Davis capture the essence of her trip effectively in her illustrations and writing. So simple in presentation yet so profound. Anyone who has ventured on a bicycling road trip can instantly relate. ... show more

  • Appreciative of this Wonderful Ride!
I am thoroughly enjoying this book! The illustrations and text convey so much feeling in such an uncluttered, uncomplicated way. I am trying to move slowly through this book because I want the experience of it to last. I keep smiling to myself and wanting to share the book with my bike-riding friends. ... show more
