  • Great lens
*: YN85mm F1.8S
I wanted to give a review because I didn't see many out there. I think this lens is great. I worried about the price being so low but I figured how bad could it be. I added a few quick pics just to show that the image quality is really good. The auto focus is very quick and completely silent. I see people complain about the build quality which I find ridiculous. The plastic on this lens feels as good as any other budget lens such as the Tamron primes. The lens hood seems a little longer than most other primes but no big deal. I didn't need to upgrade the firmware yet because the lens came with the latest version. If you're looking at this lens, you're probably trying to save a few bucks like me. Worst case scenario is that you have to return it. But I don't think you will. ... show more

  • Autofocus is off. No warranty answer. Firmware is a mess & requires security workaround on Mac.
*: 85mm lens
Too bad, but this lens is only a paperweight. Autofocus consistently focuses a few inches in front of focus point. So, using the F1.8 aperture (or anywhere near it) results in the subject being totally out of focus. Has a nice image quality in manual focus, but that's not what it's supposed to be. This should be fixable with firmware, but the firmware update site is a total mess and it's hard to figure out which file you need (Yongnuo has 2 85mm F1.8 lenses). However, if you use a Mac, you will have to disable security on your Mac to install the firmware. This is not acceptable to me. So, it's an inexpensive lens, but it's an expensive mistake. It's really too bad because I was looking for some inexpensive, smaller prime lenses for when I didn't want to carry around my larger and heavier Sony GM lenses. I was hoping that Yongnuo would be just the ticket and would've likely bought a couple of other Yongnuo primes, but no. It's junk. And, after emailing the company twice to inquire about warranty coverage and getting no response, it's clear they don't have the customer service to be playing in the bug leagues either. I advise - buyer beware. ... show more

  • Exceptionally Sharp
*: 85mm lens
This is an amazingly sharp lens, even wide open and confirmed by DXO. The only complaint (for some photographers) will be that it a bit on the slow side to focus. But I shoot portraits and flowers with it, and it's perfect for that.

  • Good overall lens
*: 85mm lens
After reading DXOMARK, I figured I would give this lens a try. So far, I'm very happy with it. The autofocus is fast, and I think the picture quality is sharp. Additionally, the metal body feels premium.

  • Seriously sharp, seriously can't update
*: 85mm lens
Incredibly well built and the pictures I was able to obtain were incredibly sharp and color accurate. While I wish the aperture was lower, I can still get great bokeh at 1.8 and am happy with this. Actually, I'm ecstatic about it with this price point! What I don't like is the inability to update the lens and it makes me worried about the longevity of it. I emailed Yunguo themselves using their website and I received an email back, but after I replied there's been no contact with me at all. This makes me worried about warranty reliability in case something goes wrong with the lens itself, let alone not being able to update the firmware. I have tried two different PCs, at least 5 different wires including one I know transfers data, and even received a replacement lens from Amazon to attempt an update to no avail, so I know this isn't user error. Yunguo needs to do something about this and my fellow buyers need to know that you will not be able to update this lens. However, I am so happy with what I've received that I am willing to keep this lens and pray to God that my purchase can at least last me 5 years. If there was another maker who gave me similar value to this lens while keeping close to the price of this lens, I would dump this lens during it's return period, but right now I am stuck in this budget range and will have to bite this bullet. ... show more

  • This lens is extremely sharp.
*: 85mm lens
I used this lens with Sony a7iii and it focused quick and silent. Sharp even in the corners.

  • Chromatic aberration and dizzying bokeh
*: 85mm lens
I think this lens is probably great for a narrow set of circumstances--taking portraits with a low contrast background for example. It's a steal at this price if what you're shooting falls into the range of what it excels at, however I don't think it's good for all-purpose shooting. Once you step outside its fairly narrow comfort zone, quality seems to drop off pretty quickly. Soft images when focusing on a distant subject, odd bokeh with high contrast backgrounds, chromatic aberration across the picture but especially at the edges and for things slightly out of the focal plane. I expected some chromatic aberration after reading reviews which suggested it could be trivially corrected in post but i found it to be too bad to correct. I wonder if I got a bad sample or something. Maybe low quality control / consistency is how they're able to produce it at such a low cost. Not sure, but I will be returning the lens and just paying a little more for a first party Sony lens. Provided a sample image + some detail crops ... show more

  • Excellent lens
*: 85mm lens
I am not sure why all the negatives reviews. The lens I purchased is awesome. Shooting on a Sony a7cii. I have no negative issues. This lens is awesome. However the updating firmware is a nightmare. Still haven’t figured it out yet. 3 stars for the updating firmware, but a solid 5 stars for performance. ... show more
