  • Amazing product for limiting noise, increasing skill, and improving confidence
Style: Brass Trumpet
My schedule is pretty tight and most of the time I have available to practice is after my daughter goes to bed. This means I need a solution that allows me to give my chops some exercise, but also doesn't disturb the sleeping members in my household. Other practice mutes do allow for substantial noise reduction, but the tone is off which makes practicing some things a little difficult. However, with the auido-reconstruction Yamaha does with this mute, you get the noise reduction AND you can faithfully hear what you're playing. Definitely not 100%, but so close that I can still work on things like tone and finer details I simply cannot do with a standard practice mute. Further, I used to have a tendency to over-blow practice mutes (since they're so quite) which led to shorter sessions overall. With this mute, you can hear yourself loudly in the headset, so that doesn't really become an issue. There is only 1 complaint I have with this product, and it's not enough of a problem for me to remove a star. The headphones they ship this with are literal garbage. I used them for a whopping 15 seconds and immediately tossed them. Get a set of over-the-ear headphones for sure. They don't even have to be mega-quality studio headphones. I have a Logitech set (see, everyone name-drops fancy headphones here, but I don't have those and wanted to say that even non-fancy headphones work great) and it works magically. I really think they should just not include those ear-buds they send. I'd suggest maybe shipping with a better pair, but that would end up increasing the price which currently stands at "worth the money" and just isn't worth it. Included earbuds aside, this is a fantastic product for literally any level of player (but the newer the player, the more valuable this is...). I also think this is a must-have for new players. I remember when I just started and was quickly shown just how hard it is to make decent sounds with this instrument. Unmuted, I was always way more timid and less willing to take "musical risks" and attempt things I knew would come out terrible at first. Getting a system like this allows you to really push your own boundaries without making the others in your house/apartment/immediate area suffer. That means you can really push yourself, and you won't feel self-conscious about doing so. This helps you as a player build a lot more confidence, and I even find myself using the mute less (during the day when people are awake) a lot more. Confidence is one of the top 3 most important things to have when playing, and this system also helps you build that. If you're on the fence, seriously just get it. I know it's just under 200 bucks and that's not an insignificant amount of money, at least it wasn't for me, but its worth every cent and you will not regret it. I cannot say enough good things about this product and wish it had been in my life much longer ago. ... show more

  • Excellent!
Style: Brass Trumpet
This is a must have for any horn player. I was previously using a Dennis Wick practice mute. The silent brass is considerably quieter with about the same resistance (maybe just a bit more). With the personal studio, the resistance is much less noticeable because it actually sounds like you don’t have a kit and I think it kind of tricks you into adapting to the resistance of the mute. The sound is amazingly realistic, and helps you hear feedback from your playing much better than with a regular practice mute. The mute fits almost completely inside the bell so it can fit in almost any case. Could the product conceivably be better? Sure- Bluetooth compatibility and more effects options would be awesome. Some organization/ some kind of case for the cords would be nice. Some have complained that the unit should have more features or better build quality for the price. Compared to a ordinary practice mute that might cost $15, ten times that much may seem expensive, but it really isn’t much when you think about what it is. This is not in the same category as those cheap practice mutes, it’s an electronic device. And considering that good headphones or a quality guitar pedal cost $300+, I’d say Yamaha has delivered an amazing value on an unprecedented product. I wouldn’t have been surprised if this cost $1000 and was meant just for professional musicians; there is no other product like it that I am aware of. Sure, playing an open horn is the best practice, but how many of us live alone in a detached home? If you play or anyone who lives with you plays, don’t hesitate! One note: when I first tried the personal studio, I thought it was defective, but is was just because I thought I had the headphone and mute jacks inserted all the way, but I didn’t. The audio jacks on the unit are very stiff- you have to push them in really hard until they are in all the way. ... show more

  • Very nice system.
Style: Brass Trumpet
I can echo many other reviews here: it's a great system overall. The earbuds are junk; I'd hate to see the anatomical monstrosity they would actually fit. Yamaha would do well to forget the earbuds and include a set of cheap AA batteries. The mute itself is about the same quietness as the Bremner mute I have been using, but is more free-blowing. In my case, I found my range with the mute is a little higher that it is with the Bremner. I rarely get a chance to practice without a mute, and when I do I'm working on sound and pitch accuracy, not range. The mute "cork" is some sort of tacky rubber compound, so this thing does NOT fall out. I hope it stays tacky. I hope also I can keep it clean. I was surprised it fits in the bell of my small-bell pocket trumpet, since Yamaha says it does not work in piccolo trumpets and that's about the size of the small pocket trumpet bell. The two reverb settings are lots of reverb and a ton of reverb. I wish there was a reverb off setting, but there is not. I wonder if some of the reason is to make it harder to compare the sound in the phones with an unmuted trumpet. That's about my only nit to pick. ... show more

  • but doesn't sound quite good enough to take the place of a properly mic'd ...
Style: Brass Trumpet
It does what Yamaha claims it can do-- practically silent trumpet practice for anyone close by but the player (via included (also kinda cheap/crappy) earbuds) can hear a full-sounding tone. The built-in reverbs (hall and room type) are decent for practice. The system would also make an *okay* interface for home recording, but doesn't sound quite good enough to take the place of a properly mic'd instrument. The quality of the product is acceptable, but seems a bit cheap overall-- especially given the price tag: the switches used to operate the different functions feel flimsy and don't have a positive lock into any position, the cables that link everything together are all rather thin and prone to tangling, the earbuds seem to be the kind you may find in a dollar store, and even the printing of the letters which label each function switch seems cheaply applied. Perhaps this is typical of Yamaha gear? I have always owned Roland stuff and have become accustomed to more rugged/professionally executed music gear. Again, it does exactly what Yamaha says it does, and it does that extremely well. There are no comparable products on the market. I'm glad Yamaha has decided to fill this niche. You won't find anything better for this job. It is a great investment for any practicing musician. I just feel that the physical quality of the whole system should be much better at the given price. ... show more

  • Works extremely well, great sound and quiet for everyone else
Style: Brass Trumpet
Bought this for my daughter so she could practice in her room after her sister is asleep and to take on vacation (yep she's dedicated). It creates a very quiet sound indeed, barely audible, but just able to make out a note. If you plug in the unit and put decent headphones on it sounds just like you're playing a regular trumpet - to me, that means it is about perfect. It also seems to allow good airflow so you get a natural feel blowing. Love it. ... show more

  • Scary good
Style: Brass Trumpet
First off, as a mute: The back-pressure is comparable to my LotFancy practice mute. I can practice in an apartment although I'd probably avoid it after midnight. Like all mutes, it changes the feel and the pitches. For me, this showed up as incoherent slotting around the top half of my working range; I had to concentrate harder to drop into the correct slots. Moisture back-up is also an issue with all semi-closed mutes and you will be spending more time getting your instrument dry again. Second, with the headphone amp. Scary. Every person I've ever talked to has had this experience. They put on the headphones, blow a couple notes...and immediately start fumbling for the mute because they are CERTAIN it just fell out of the instrument. Even now, I have to take off the headphones every now and then to confirm I'm not blasting the neighbors. It doesn't sound perfect. But it sounds like a trumpet. It preserves enough of the correct sound you can not just practice for pitches, but work on your tone and your articulation. It is in fact good enough that if you really had to, you could record off it (it's a little more like a cornet sound than a full trumpet but...when you are desperate...) Now when is Yamaha going to throw some of this same sonic reconstruction magic towards the Silent Violin? ... show more

  • Keep your expectations low, but very useful
Style: Brass Trumpet
While this is amazing technology that let's you practice much quieter than without it, it plays VERY differently than without the mute. The back pressure is less than the previous model, but it is still much higher than any other type of mute. I'm not sure what the long term effects will be practicing with such a different pressure. Imagine playing with a mouthpiece that has a large pin hole for a throat...it's kind of like that. The worst thing is that the natural intonation of notes in the lower register is way off. I have to force, say, a low C, to be much lower than what it wants to be with this mute inserted. BUT, it is a life-saver if you have to practice quietly! The sound it creates is very good too, but frankly it's processed and nothing like the actual sound of the trumpet with the mute removed. ... show more

  • I don’t annoy my family… or get mocked by my kids!
Style: Brass Trumpet
While it’s not as silent as some of the reviews make it sound, it’s good enough to prevent your family from running and hiding at the noise of a dying animal while someone learns to play the trumpet! I played 30+ years ago, and I wanted to relearn how to play. This came recommended from the web, so I figured it was worth a try. Turns out it is well worth the money, and knowing what I know now, I’d pay more. If you’re in a closed room, people on the other side of the door would have to know you’re practicing the trumpet to really understand what that slight noise coming out of the room would be. It allows me to relearn the trumpet without the ridicule from my kids that would surely come! For parents, it will allow your children to practice without you bleeding from the ears! Only real gripe is the fact that it requires batteries instead of having a rechargeable battery. It’s 2023, wasting AA batteries seems silly, so I was forced to buy some rechargeable AAs. Great product. ... show more
