First, this is a practice mute. Not a performance mute. It sole purpose is to quite your horn so you can play full force and not blast out the neighbors. I would say that you get probably 15% normal volume when you use this mute. So just practicing normal tones with a closed bedroom door between you and the parents should keep the noise away from them so they don't have to turn up the TV volume. lol Secondly, there is a small resistance to your playing. It is very slight but you can feel it at full volume. Think of it as a runner wearing weights during his practice and then when he takes the weights of he can run even faster. The bit of resistance is a good thing to warmup with or even do your full practice with because when you take the mute out Ba da der der! It feels like you just got a second wind. With frequent use during practice I can see this strengthening my lung and playing power. Good investment for a student player that is for sure.

Dennis Wick Trumpet Practice Mute Pros: - small and light enough to keep in a gig bag and take it with you. - sufficiently quiet to block out most volume. It's not "silent" like the Yamaha practice mute, but you also don't need ear-phones with this one. I can actually practice a lick when the rest of a concert band is rehearsing, without bothering anyone. Should be good enough for a condo/apartment or while someone else is sleeping, if you have a closed door between you. - good quality, as are all Denis Wick mutes. E.g., the corked end is very well done and it stays in the bell. - in tune and distortion-free to a low F# and the pedal tones well below that, unlike my much heavier (and obsolete) Charlie Spivak WISPA Mute. - relatively inexpensive. Cons: - has a bit of back pressure, but it's not too bad. The mute seals the entire bell off except for two 3/16" diameter holes facing you. - results in a highly "muted" sound. Recommended.

I thought I wanted one of the those electronic mutes for practice, but I was discouraged by reports they didn't maintain accurate pitch throughout the register. I was happy to realize these practice mutes serve the same practical purpose with much greater simplicity, and had reports of accurate pitch. I bought the practice mute, and it works great. It lowers the SPL at the same distance by more than 24dB compared to an open horn. It plays loud enough I don't need headphones, but quiet enough not to be bothersome to people in close proximity. Playing, the SPL at 1 meter is usually under 75dBA. I can play with someone in front of my horn without risking their hearing. I don't even get shoved in a room and the door slammed on me.

I bought this one to replace my worn-out practice mute. I have a DW aluminum straight mute that I LOVE, as it’s very responsive, & does what I need (warm & dark, or BRIGHT, depending on the music & my equipment). The practice mute is also responsive, & easy to play. Get one!

I am a semi professional trombone player who has always wanted to pick up the trumpet. This last Christmas, my family bought me one and I have been wanting to play the thing non stop. However, I live in a condo with thin walls and do not wish to disturb my neighbors. I already have a practice mute for my trombone, a silent brass model, but didn't want to spend that much on something that I am just learning, so I went with this guy. For the price, it does a great job. Yes, there is back pressure, and yes, it is pretty substantial, but for the price you are paying, you can't really complain. I you really have a problem with the back pressure, might I suggest drilling another hole in the side 90 degrees from the other 2 holes. This should help with that issue. I do give it 4 stars only because I believe the back pressure to be significant enough to note. Other than that, it is great and I am very satisfied for the price! If you are on the fence, buy it, and if you want less pressure, drill a hole. Just note that another hole will increase the noise level as well.
