  • The Next Best Thing To None At All
I am completely ecstatic about having my third generation Silent Brass system. I read a series of reviews before purchasing this system and was hesitant because there didn't seem to be a consensus as to whether or not this was a good product. Let me settle this argument NOW!!!! This is a superior product in every aspect of the design. I've owned the other two generations made by Yamaha and found that they were convenient, however, serious flaws prevented using the system on a regular basis. (1) The previous systems were very frustrating in that the mute would slowly work its way out of the bell. (2) The other systems cause severe back-pressure and thus gave an unnatural playing experience. (3) The sound quality was only a good substitute and definitely not realistic. The new SB7Xc has resolved all of these issues. The sound and playing experience are completely natural. The first time I played, I actually thought I did not have the mute in the bell! It is that realistic. I do not doubt some reviewers testimony that state that some of the notes are flat, however, making the appropriate adjustments on the tuning slides solve this problem. The ONLY experience that is better than this system is to not have to insert a mute at all and play naturally. But as we ll know, this is impractical if you live with others or confined spaces such as a hotel or apartment. I highly recommend this unit for all practice occasions. ... show more

  • Really cool device, gives me reason to play trumpet
This thing has got me practicing my trumpet 1000% more, now I can practice my scales and long tones without annoying neighbors or the recently deceased. Listening in headphones gives you a strange physical feeling of playing unobstructed. A MUST HAVE for any trumpet player from high school to retiree. Remember if you put your horn down for more than 24 hours, its gonna take you several practice sessions to get your chops back to how they were. This eliminates those times when you just can't practice because its too late or someone will hear you that you don't want to hear you. No more excuses, play trumpet! Pros: You can now play at 4am without disturbing anyone. You can use this for acid jazz and future funk effects. You will be playing your trumpet more! Cons: Little black box, can't turn the reverb off, batteries only. ... show more

  • Not the best sound quality
The ear plugs did not fit me. Too big. I am using a good quality nose canceling headphones. The sound really is not like a unplugged trumpet. It is exactly like a plugged up trumpet. Even the reverb does not make up for it. The noise cancellation is good, however. Thers is a bit of resistance that you can actually hear at the beginning and ends of notes. It is a stuffy sound. But the noise cancellation lets you play when you want without disturbing anyone. I did expect the sound quality to be better but it is what it is. You can play whenever. It is better then the $10 noise cancelling mute I was using. At least you can hear something even though it is totally out of tune. At least you can play when you want. Maybe the cons turn into pros when you learn how to make a good sound through the mute. I'm keeping it. I would recommend purchase of the "Silent" (not really) mute as long as the buyer knows he will not sound like Doc Severincen through it. ... show more

  • Disappointing
I must be critical for an instrument accessory as expensive as this. Pros: It is exceptionally quiet and convenient. I can now practice and improve in the convenience of my small apartment. Cons: You do not get any form of a container for the delicate mute and the rest of the mess that makes this thing work. There is simply not quite enough thought process put into the user experience of this product to justify the price. Thoughts: I think if they had included everything inside the mute and had made it bluetooth and rechargeable... that the price would make much more sense. Alas, it is Yamaha, they can get away with this. After all, they are the only ones brave enough to get into this product segment. ... show more

  • As advertised. I’m very impressed
I have to say I’m very impressed. When I was opening the packaging I was scepticle about whether or not I would like it so I saved the packaging. Then I plugged it in and gave my trumpet a blow and was amazed at how much sounds it keeps from getting out. I would compare it to a slightly more quiet Harmon mute. It blocks a good 95% of the sound. I play a room away from my wife watching tv on normal volume and she has no idea I’m even playing. This is perfect for anyone who lives near other people and don’t want to disturb anyone. The sound is great as long as you don’t use the headphones that come with the device. The reverb is really top notch. I use my Apple earbuds for now but would be interested to see how nice sound cancelling headphones would be. I can honestly say this was worth every penny and it has given me a means to get back into playing my trumpet which is very dear to me. ... show more

  • Very useful silencing system for trumpet.
I own, among many others, a Yamaha D/Eb trumpet and a Silent Yahama piano which I use in Paris where we live half-time (or did, pre-Covid...), so I am well familiar with Yamaha quality. This unit deadens the emitted trumpet sound in a comparable manner to that of a traditional Shastock Whisper Mute. The resistance it causes is comparable or perhaps slightly less than the Whisper Mute but the sound, of course, is much better. I find the reverb effect (which I don't use at all on the piano) to be most enjoyable, simulating playing in a large hall. An added bonus is that the feedback this provides leads to confidence and attendant relaxation, for me at least, a most salutary and unexpected side effect. Not cheap but well worth it in my estimation. Recommended! ... show more
