  • Best bass for the money !
Style: 100 Series Size: 4-String Color: Black
This bass has everything you want if you're on a budget. It has great tone, great feel, and great value. Yamaha instruments are some of the best around and this bass fits right in with their record of quality.

  • Excellent midrange bass!
Style: 500 Series Size: 4-String Color: Translucent Black
You can stop looking. If you're ready to graduate from the $150-250 beginner range but don't think you're yet ready to drop a grand on a bass, this is the one. Hell, you don't even really need to drop more on one, this is flexible enough for anything you need. Looked and felt great right out of the box. Only a very minor truss adjustment to correct a little fret buzz and I was off to the races. From this price point on up, you'd be wise to take it to a luthier (most guitar shops will have one on staff) to get it adjusted just to make sure it's in top shape, if you haven't done it yourself. You can learn to adjust (it isn't difficult) but it isn't very expensive to have it done for you, either. The active/passive pickup is a great addition and worth the step up from the 304. Once I started using it, I'm not sure how I was able to do without it for so long. The back of the body has an LED battery warning indicator so you won't be caught flat-footed with a dead battery when you're in active mode. It does automatically switch over to passive when it loses power, though. Don't take the missing fifth star as criticism. I only use five stars for above and beyond. Take the fours as ringing endorsements. To address the categories Amazon asked about: As far as for beginners, you can find less expensive basses in the $150-200 range, this might be a little pricey for someone's first instrument. The TRBX174 at about $229 (they're still widely available as of April 2021) might suit the absolute beginner a little better at a much lower price point. That said, you definitely can't go wrong with this one if the money isn't a concern. Craftsmanship is top notch. This bass is made in Indonesia. I was a little squirrelly, but the construction is top notch and I found nothing to complain about. I couldn't find any obvious flaws, and it looks, feels, and plays great. No cheap construction materials here. It was perfectly tuned and had only minor fret buzz out of the box, something common with any bass. One quick adjustment and we're off. Versatility is the best I've experienced so far. It works great in the basement, studio or stage. I mostly use it for practice and home use, but it's stood up to everything I've thrown at it. I've tried to find limitations but haven't found any. The active/passive option is something I didn't think about when I ordered; I'd never played with it before. But now that I have it it's like adding a fifth gear, I notice its absence when I'm playing any of my other basses. In short: this is your sign that this is the bass for you. ... show more

  • Exceptional for under $1,000
Style: 500 Series Size: 5-String Color: Translucent Black
Exceptional compared to others at this price. Electronics are awesome! Wide range of tone with the active 3 band EQ and active/passive switch. Sounds great. Records great. I'm running an Ashdown EB-Lite 12-220 EVO III Combo with a Digitech BP355 modeler/FX in the loop. Sounds great thru BP355s XLR outs to interface, and thru a Sennheiser e902 mic on the amp. Instead of a pickup switch for neck, bridge, or both, there's a blend knob, which allows even deeper tonal control. I tried a Schecter Stiletto Stealth 5 first, $529, and I couldn't believe how terrible it was! Severely distorted high-mids, D and G strings, had to turn treble all the way down on the bass and amp, and I like bright, trebley bass. It had incurable fret buzz in the A and D strings that ruined the attack, they sounded like an upright. Buzz on every string. Raised the strings so high it was unplayable, and still buzz! A shame, because it was so pretty, a rare all black. I'm really glad I returned that and got this Yamaha. It's really hard to find a bass with no fret buzz. Even $1,300 basses I've demoed.... The TRBX505 had minor buzz when I got it. I loosened the truss rod 1/4 turn and got rid of most of it. Still minor buzz in D and G strings, but it's normal for basses and not picked up by the pickups. I did another 1/4 turn just now. It's still pretty straight, so I'll probably be able to get rid of it before I get to 1 full turn. The low B string doesn't sound great. I think amps are very particular about being able to handle B strings or not. I might have to start looking at other amps. But I think .130 is still too light for a B, and I want to do drop-A, so I'm waiting on a custom .146. I didn't give 5 stars because, well, it's not a $5,000 bass, so it's not the best. But it's the best it can be for $579. It's as good as or better than some $900-$1,300 basses I've played. Definitely recommend. And I really don't understand why cheap basses are pushed on beginners: you're gonna need an instrument that makes you want to learn to play it. It's much harder to make a cheap bass sound good. An advanced player can make a cheap bass sound good. A beginner needs the BASS to sound good so they will be obsessed with it enough to play it enough and get good. So, if you are serious about wanting to learn the bass, this is a great choice for beginners. At this price, you better be sure, because if you end up deciding you're not interested enough to commit... Well, you'll have to sell it for maybe $400. ... show more

  • I must have gotten a bad one. I returned it.
Style: 500 Series Size: 5-String Color: Translucent White
I really wanted to like this bass but ultimately I returned it. Here is a quick summary of why: 1: the guitar was not set up properly and even when I had an expert luthier try to fix it he could not get the G string to intonate. 2: based in the serial number this guitar was sitting in a warehouse for nearly a year. Which leads to 3: because the guitar was sitting for so long the neck completely dried out causing the frets to have several problems 4: the four washers for the neck bolts were rusty 5: the finish was poorly applied It’s honestly uncharacteristic of Yamaha which normally makes quality instruments. My theory is that I just got a bad one, possibly due to just sitting for so long. I ended up getting a Sterling by Music Man ray25 classic and I find it to be a much better instrument. ... show more
