  • Better than I expected
I'm using this to drill holes in polished agate, petrified wood and jade. The plastic pieces work well to prevent damage or scratching of a finished piece. I'm using diamond drills, so I keep the vice and the rock submerged in water to prevent overheating of the diamond drill. Practice with some junk first and use light pressure with a drill. Strong pressure WILL move the piece and ruin your hole because the plastic bits will squish. ... show more

  • Works, but you get what you pay for.
This is just okay. It will do basically everything I need, but definitely not in style. It feels very light and often inadequate. Keep in mind that it is "Cast Aluminium", not steel. Also, I was expecting the orange nubs to be rubber, but they are hard plastic.

  • Pretty cool little vice
Havent used fully yet. Appears all good for working on drilling holes in rocks. (My daughters want) Didnt really open and close smoothly when I first got. Little WD-40 on the screw, and slide below and now it is smooth as butter. Note: if you dont have WD 40, can use vasoline / crisco / cooking oil... not running machinery, so any type of lubricant will work. Cooking oil can get gummy over time, so only use if you have to Full disclosure, I would rather add WD 40 than have the whole part slimy with mill oil. Overall good size and wieght, reasonable price, kind of an oddball item will for sure be going on the workbench. ... show more

  • $12 vise that should cost $8
Pros: It came as advertised but I wish I paid more attention to the details--my fault. It is cast aluminum so you can find clever ways of using magnets for your projects. It fits in your pocket and weighs slightly more than the honey crisp apple I just ate. Cons: It has no weight to it. If you're going to clamp something in it and work on it you must screw this to a surface. Out of the box there were a lot of machining artifacts (shaved metal) in the grooves of the clamping screw. Out of the box I can't clamp cardboard stock in it, an example being a business card. I can modify it to close it tight enough to do the task but a vise should be able to close far enough to hold a piece of paper. Commentary: For a few dollars more you can get products that are magnitudes better and more flexible than this and far better built. I bought this on a whim while I was buying a few other hobby vises and it is a throw-away slash I-might-use-this-someday item. ... show more

  • Good, better with a little help
Potential for an almost lab grade vise, with a little more quality control. The moving jaw, had a casting sprue that was painted over, with an epoxy-like paint. The combination of the thick paint and the sprue, would not allow the jaw to close. I removed the sprue, and the overly thick paint. I then trued the jaw face, the result was an almost lab grade vise. The result can be seen in the photos. ... show more

  • Almost a 5 star rating.
The reason for a 4 star rating is because it works like its suppose to and that's great but it's not good for the smaller beads I'm not talking about seed beads. It just needs something you can change out when needed. It's good item just fell a little short of being a great item.

  • Drillers beware
I wouldn't recommend this for holding and drilling small pieces of jewelry. Tried to drill a small hole in a circular diamond shaped piece of cheap plastic bling (thank goodness) and it did not grip to the piece very well. The piece came out onto the drill bit. It's O.K, for holding cheap items but risky for expensive items. I ended up making my own grippers from wood for the bling pieces and used the screws that came with the vice to screw them on and it worked great. ... show more

  • Works well.
I really like this vise. I’m just getting into locksport (I learned there’s a name for the hobby of picking locks, and all other activities related to locks). So I don’t want to buy something expensive just to decide I don’t want to continue with this hobby. It holds a padlock lock okay, I just have to tighten it really good. The knobs that hold your item in place are a stiff plastic, and they’re not super smooth. This vise weighs less than a pound. The screw that tightens the vise doesn’t turn smoothly. I’ve never needed a vise so don’t know if that’s something worth fixing with oil or something. The bottom of the vise is smooth, and because it’s a very light metal I strongly recommend using something underneath it that is non-slip, like that gripper liner for drawers. It has a low profile, so that might make it hard to use depending on your situation. I’m using a high table and a low chair so I’m good. I’d recommend this as an entry level vise. If I keep at this hobby, I’ll upgrade to something taller and stronger. But for now this’ll do just fine. Edit- I should have mentioned that I am also lightly holding the lock to stablize it while I work. Otherwise I would be rocking the lock and vise around. ... show more
