Being treated for lung cancer has required me to be extra cautious about allergies, respiratory infections, and of course Covid 19. Having compromised lung function is a complication that can cause serious difficulties for me and side-stepping any of these potential problems has become really important. Living in Southwest Florida with its constantly blooming flowers and pine pollen usually results in both allergies and upper respiratory infections for me. And of course with Covid floating around necessary precautions must be taken by everyone. I have been taking XYZAL allergy pills each morning to help combat the potential symptoms of these three problems. They were recommended by my Nurse Practitioner wife as the "latest and greatest" in the fight against allergies. This particular drug used to be available by prescription only but is now offered OTC. Benadryl was a first-generation antihistamine and often caused drowsiness and sedation. Then came Zyrtec as a second-generation antihistamine and XYZAL as third generation. These medications are classified by how likely they are to reach the brain and cause drowsiness. Benadryl always caused me to be sleepy and I still take it at night as needed to fall asleep. However Melatonin is also very helpful. XYZAL greatly reduces the allergic reactions I normally experience without making me drowsy. Good stuff this third-generation drug! ... show more
