    • Really iPad compatible with footswitch control.
Just picked up my replacement one. And I am loving it. I screwed it on a mic stand I had and it's sturdy. Seems very responsive to light touches. And catches all my dinamics as fast as I roll the snare, toms and symbols. So far no delay or latency. I hooked up a piano sustain pedal I had to the back of the xjam, went into the app and easily configured it to kick the bass drum. Now I play it like a real drum machine, kicking bass drum, doubles and trippe's faster than my big electric drum set. The footswitch input seems extremely responsive to my kicks. I think xjam is pretty damn good so far.. It's really small but thats what I was looking for to take places with my iPad or combo to my boss drum machines. I midi connected it to my boss dr 880. And via the iPad editor app, configured it where I wanted my pads to sound off and with my dr 880 witch has phrases I had in it, along with the foot pedal connected for kick drum. With the dr 880 real drum sounds inside it. Wow, I was playing this little thing but sounding BIG. Oh, and I was worried for awhile before it arrived would I need a Mac or Windows computer to get the app to configure the xjam. But no...It is entirely true. All you need is an iPad. Not (I Phone.) But iPad. The app downloaded fast and configuratiin was only like 4 button pushes. Extremely easy for those like me who are not computer savvy. Once I did it. I pushed "save to xjam" then unplugged it from the iPad and midi connected it to my drum machine. All my configurations are now locked into the xjam and I can switch from and to my 5 different drum machines anytime. Most all drum machines kick drum is midi note 36. So it's easy and not a lot of cords all tangled around. So it is compatible to iPad for sure. And I'm sure for Mac and windows if it works with just an iPad. I think I am very pleased with this. The price is well worth it so far I feel. Even the Akia studio pro can't plug in a kick pedal. Not without a host or through a computer. Plus IOS doesn't have good configuration apps for the akia studio like this one being as easy and simple. And lastly the appearance is nice. It feels rugged and sturdy, even the bottom screw in hole to my mic stand, it feels sturdy. It's quiet. Oh one more thing. I hate midi pad controllers that have that boxy/hollow sound when hitting the pads. If your headphones are not on your head and you play other pad controllers. It sounds loud like hitting a little box. But not the xjam. This little thing is quiet. So no one can even tell you are playing anything except you through your headphones. This review is just my opinion of the xjam pad controller. May not be for everyone. But if you want easy iPad app configuration, footpedal configuration, extream dinamics, quietness, touch response, volosity settings, portability, all for a decent price. I think it's worth taking a chance with. Just what I needed. I'ma use it on my lunch breaks at work or down times at work. So quiet and small no one will even know the better in my cubicle. Lol. Not unless they see this review and then start coming around looking to see if I am working or just playing the xjam. So far I haven't used any iOS daws with it, like garage band or band lab or fl studio moble. But if it works this good with my old Boss dr 3, as it does, because I just finished playing it with that. So I am pretty much not worried the iOS daw apps will work too just as good. Because this controller is said to be made for iPads first. Now, I can kick the bass pedal for kick drum in the iOS daws. Not needing a midi host with all kinds of wires tangled up. I can just hook to iPad, run my footswitch to the xjam, configure it for kick drum, or whatever I choose. And play drums almost for real in the daw's. Something else I've been hoping to find. Amazon is pretty good with returns if it doesn't fit your style of wants. Just be careful with it and don't scratch it up. If you don't like it. Ask Amazon to return. But for me, I think I am keeping this one for sure. Its not as expensive as most midi pad controllers, and it does more than most of them can. Easily. True Ipad computable app. True Ipad configuration. Unlike many pad controllers that once you get it, come to find out you still need a real computer to configure things. I always never liked that part. But not the Xjam. It's true, and easily complete with iPad. Oh well.. I am finished talking because I'm putting back on my headphones to jam with my new Xjam pad controller. ... show more

    • Amazing Pads for Finger Drumming, Seriously Underrated
Not sure why this controller doesn’t have more reviews. I found it through a T.J. Guardino video a little over a year ago and have been using it pretty consistently ever since. The pads on this thing are amazing, especially for finger drumming. I own an MPC Live 2 and an SP404MK2, and I’m actually replacing my Ableton Move with this controller for my current setup. The pads feel responsive, the velocity sensitivity is great, and the controller itself is super thin and easy to keep on a desk or throw in a bag. If you’re looking for an affordable MIDI controller mainly for finger drumming, I highly recommend checking this one out. Really underrated controller. ... show more

    • Great hardware, setup sucked.
All I'm looking for is a reasonably responsive set of drum pads. That's all. I'm a professional pianist for many decades, so I have some sense of how striking keys/pads should elicit a reasonably consistent response. I tried AKAI LDP8 and LDP218, and the basic responsiveness of the pads was terrible -- fortissimo (really smack it) to get any response at all. Same with the Korg NanoPad2. The XJam, however, works fine. I'm not looking for perfection here -- especially at this price point. Just reasonable, and the XJAM does the job well. My only complaint is that I found the software/driver side to be fussy. Unlike other drumpads (like the AKAI and KORG), you MUST install their MIDI driver for the unit to work at all. OK, I can live with that. Meanwhile, on first install, their driver crippled my Cubase (wouldn't load at all), but when I uninstalled and reinstalled, Cubase worked again. (Cue Twilight Zone music). While I'm at it, the necessity of installing their proprietary driver was not mentioned at all in their setup instructions. Wait, they don't have setup instructions -- just "plug it in" with their implication is that it will work. Not so. Their printed documentation goes from "just plug it in" straight into minutia about the various knobs and features -- nothing about the steps an actual user would need to do to get it working. (Like "install our proprietary drivers.) I also searched online and found no videos (by the manufacturer or anyone else) on how to get my initial setup working. Maybe I'm too dense to just get it. Wouldn't be the first time! Meanwhile, at the end of the day, it IS a reasonably sensitive and very usable unit (now that I'm past the setup 'fun'). It certainly beats everything else I tried at this price point by a country mile. ... show more

    • Excellent drumpad without the nonsense
So after some installation problems, which seem to have been specific to my computer and not the fault of the Xjam itself or the editor software, I’ve had a few days to practice with it. Coming from the padKontrol, it’s quite small which took a bit to get used to. But it saves on desk space so overall it’s a plus. The pad sensitivity is remarkable. I can get audible sounds at inputs of 1 or 2. I had to dial back the headroom 2 or 3 notches on a few of the pads because I was maxxing out too easily. Once that was done, the unit has a smooth response through the velocities. I haven’t had to adjust the sensitivity at all. Being able to adjust these levels on a per pad basis is great. I just use the straight linear velocity curve so far (number 4). It is a universal, not per pad, curve. As to the rotary encoders. As others have mentioned, mine were jerky and sluggish as well. I contacted support about the initial problems I was having and asked about the encoders. Here is the reponse: "Regarding the encoders: Xjam uses the encoder as midi controller. It covers 20 signal steps within one cycle. If you turn the knob faster, it still sends out 20 midi messages also, but the step between two message is greater than 1. You might find maybe steps 0,6,12,18,…127. I admit, that relative values for Xjam’s controllers is a compromise. We are considering adding relative CC messages for the encoders, but I cannot tell yet, when this feature will be implemented. I have to discuss with the developers if this could be implemented via firmware or if this is rather a feature for a future hardware update." Support from Mike from ESI was prompt and helpful. The issues I was having worked themselves out (computer gremlins I guess). The build quality is excellent. It’s nice to have a no-nonsense controller where you aren’t paying for redundant features or libraries you’ll never use (Maschine and Aura) or redundant DAW integration with so-so pads (Atom). ... show more

I bought this after watching some YouTube videos including T.J. Guardino (great channel). I'm not planning to be an expert finger drummer but I really wanted a small expressive controller to go along with my live setup. This controller has so much going for it -- way more than I expected even. With the controls for 3 banks, there are actually a total of 18 encoders and 48 pad triggers available. Each control can be configured separately by channel, type, etc. and then you can save everything into a quickly recallable scene... and store up to 48 scenes! The pads are not just useful for drumming because they have more than velocity. You can use polyphonic aftertouch (set up by default!) -- or just normal channel aftertouch/pressure, if you set the unit that way. Or fixed velocity of course. And it has some preset velocity curves too. The pads are very sensitive, in a good way. If you're into finger drumming, you'll be able to really do some dynamics. If you're planning to use this for triggering clips or changes, you won't need to worry about the unit missing your taps. The encoders are not flimsy, they feel pretty tight and smooth when rotated, seems like they have the potential to be quite reliable. The app works great on my Mac, although it's a little ugly to look at. But the controller itself is so nice looking and functional, who cares? Very happy with this purchase. ... show more

Wanted a compact drum pad controller. Got the xjam based off review by the Quest for Groove guy. The first one I got didn’t have the greatest sensitivity so I ordered a second one to compare. Second one had better sensitivity / responsiveness that I would have been happy with but one of the pads would trigger without being pressed. Probably a worthwhile pad controller if you get a good one. Returned both and got a maschine mikro instead. ... show more

    • Awesome product. Very well built and works right out of the box without any drivers.
I was going to get the Maschine Mikro, but thought I would give the Xjam a try as it is much more compact and would fit in my gig bag. I was blown away by the quality of the item. The pads are great and very responsive. The product is solidly bulit and is of the highest quality. The top is aluminum and the rest is plastic. I am a pianist and wanted this item to serve as a means to record drum tracks. It has a MIDI out as well which I could use to connect to other equipment. I use a Macbook Pro and was able to easily use it with Logic pro without any issues. ... show more
