  • Super-portable and addictive
Color: Gray
I recently bought bought both an X4 and an X3 from XTEInk through Amazon. The X4 is the perfect size, has a USB-C port, and (in my tactile and personal opinion) has the superior side button (double rocker). The X3 is the ultimate travel reader, but it might be a touch too small and light (imho); it has a proprietary magnetic pin charger (as opposed to USB-C), and the buttons are super-quiet. Both devices have excellent buttons in terms of quiet operation and satisfying feel. Neither device has a back-light. Neither device is touchscreen. Navigation can be a little tricky at first, but it's a quick learning curve. I downloaded some epub files from gutenberg.org, and I was off to the races, as they say. Both devices are addictive. I just want to read another page and click to progress. If you're looking for something to drag you away from your phone screen, I can think of no better tech alternative (I own other ereaders). As others will tell you, I highly recommend flashing the alternative UI through Crosspoint. It too is very straightforward and quick to do. My bottom line is that I'm really, really happy with both devices, and I look forward to having a light and easy reading option with me at all times, as opposed to phone use. I highly recommend which form factor seems better suited to your hand size and needs. ... show more

  • Recommend
Color: Gray
This e-reader is lightweight, compact, and very comfortable to hold. The screen is easy on the eyes and perfect for distraction-free reading. I really like the physical page-turn buttons because they feel responsive. Battery life has been impressive, and the device is easy to carry anywhere. The storage is more than enough for plenty of books and documents. Great little e-reader for anyone who wants a simple and portable reading experience. ... show more

  • Don’t Do It….
Color: Gray
I fell for the content creators hype and instantly regretted it. The good: it’s small The bad: no backlight (full daylight reading only), totally counter intuitive or confusing user interface buttons, clunky firmware out of the box, slightly less clunky firmware with reflash to Crosspoint, lengthy “re-indexing” wait after any setting change. Did I mention NO backlight? I don’t know about you, but much of the time I want to pick up something to read I’m not going to have full daylight. This thing is unreadable unless you’ve got really good lighting. The buttons are a hot mess. There’s no indication that they are rocker buttons, but after a while you kind of figure it out. But even then they don’t make sense. I found that even after fiddling a bit AND some times having them labeled in Crosspoint I was guessing more often than not at which to press. If the stock firmware is so bad that it immediately needs to be replaced with something else, that’s a pretty good indicator that overall the product isn’t going to be worth it. In Crosspoint every time you change a setting the thing just sits there for a while “re-indexing”. I guess when you leave and re-open a book it needs to do that? Annoying. It’s only positive is, it’s small. That doesn’t make up for all the negatives. Back to Amazon it goes. ... show more

  • Wonderful little ereader - with a few exceptions
Color: Black
Will start off by getting right to it and say I absolutely think this is a great tiny ereader everyone should have, and that it's a wonderful little device. Having books *this* handy has gotten me to read even more - it's perfect for reading for a few minutes when you have a little downtime, quick 5-10 sessions. Maybe you're waiting for the bus, for pasta to cook, for your uber to show up, whatever, but it's extremely portable and easy to just have on you anywhere, so it's easier to read a bit in situations where you wouldn't normally have a book sized device on you. But to really get the full potential out of it, you need to do something first. Maybe you've seen other reviews mention Crosspoint - it's an open source firmware made for this, that is much, much better than what the x4 ships with, and my opinion should be the first thing you do - interface is much better, more customization, better formatting, wireless book transferring, etc etc. Just a much better overall experience. It's extremely simple, and for those who aren't too comfy with computers you'll be just fine too - it's just a few clicks and a minute or two, so if you do get an x4, search for Crosspoint Reader. For those who more recently have seen some mentions here and there of the company locking down some devices so you can't flash Crosspoint - relax. They have said overseas models won't be locked down, and in the event you do get a locked one, Crosspoint has an unlock tool right on their site. The device itself is small, lightweight, with a great battery life and nice sharp screen. It's a little barebones though for those looking for extra features - there's no backlight, and it's physical buttons only, no touchscreen, but for those who are used to carrying books, or older ereaders, that shouldn't really be much of an issue. Personally I prefer no touch screen on this so I don't accidentally turn a page or something lol If you're ok with a straightforward ereader without a few frills, and can spare a minute or two to make a few clicks to install Crosspoint, you have an inexpensive, lightweight and ultra portable ereader that is an amazing companion ... show more

  • Amazing little device Amazing little device
Color: Gray
I wanted something small, much more portable, and can read books without distractions and this delivers exactly those criteria. What the listing comes with: - Xteink x4 device - Two magsafe ring stickers to place on items that doesn't have magsafe (one white and one black) - A matte screen protect that you must apply yourself - A microSD - A microSD USB There are CONS compared to other eReaders on the market such as: - No backlight - No touch screen - No highlighting - No apps, must upload the book yourself Personally, even though there are quite a few CONs they do not bother me at all. The backlight isn't a big issue, as you can pair it with a magsafe phone light or read with a lamp on. I personally do not read often at night, so this issue isn't such a big deal for me. No touchscreen is more of a pro for me than a con. I like that I can wipe the screen or hold the device without worrying I might touch the screen on accident and the pages flip. I always had that issue of accidental page flipping before on other types of eReaders so I appreciate the button only navigation. I am sad about not having the ability to highlight my books, but I can live without that function. Now let's actually talk about the pros. I love the size. There is another model (xteink x3 which is smaller) and I think the x4 is the perfect size to fit in the palm of your hand. It's also practically weightless. I always have issues with other eReaders where my hands get fatigue holding the device even with added accessories like a magsafe holder, a band, and a grip but it just adds more weight to the device, so it becomes less and less comfortable to use. The buttons are a bit customizable and are super responsive. I disliked that other eReaders sometimes does not register my finger when I tap the next screen. This is my first time having an eReader with buttons and it has been a dream to use. All the buttons are placed in areas where it feels natural when you hold the device so turning pages or holding the device isn't awkward nor tiresome. The customization is minimal but very nice, especially if you plan to use a custom firmware (which I HIGHLY recommend). Big tips from experience when you purchase this device: - Have a PC/laptop it makes uploading items to the device so much easier - Download community firmware! (Crosspoint, crosspet, or Inx) I personally like crosspoint - I haven't tried other firmware but if you do get crosspoint I found that the formatting can be weird sometimes if you upload an .epub file straight from the source. Sometimes I lose the select chapter function and other things. To prevent this, in my experience, download a program called Calibre and download .pdf files of your books. Convert them in Calibre to .epub files then upload those to the device. For some reason it saves the formatting of the .pdf better with individual chapters and pages so it's easier to select them. I'm not sure if it's just user error (probably is on my part) but I find uploading books this way makes the formatting better, readable, can select chapters/pages, and the font is more legible. Honestly, I plan to buy another device just to have as a back-up. 10/10 would recommend. If you are not negotiable on any of the CONs definitely do not buy. It is set as a very minimal device and that is exactly what it delivers. Images below are with crosspoint firmware installed. ... show more

  • Singlehandedly fixed my adversion to reading books. I love this thing!
Color: Gray
TLDR: Read the pros and cons at the end... I probably havent seriously read a single book in the past 6 years. Even throughout college, I always wormed my way around reading the textbooks and class material. For me, there have always been 2 issues with books: One, they are cumbersome to carry around; two, they are overwhelming to think about. The XTEINK X4 solves both of these problems for me. The device is so small and slim (literally smaller than your hand), that putting it in your pocket adds no baggage at all. I can bring this thing anywhere, and read anywhere. Standing at a crosswalk, waiting for the walk signal? Read a quick paragraph on the X4. Sitting at work eating lunch? Bring out the X4. Hopping on the toilet and dont want to stare at the floor for the next 5-10 minutes? X4. On top of the portability, the size has a second advantage: it splits the page into digestable chunks. Gone are the days of tracking down which paragraph you left off on 2 hours ago. The device displays only a handful of sentences, so picking up where you left off is a cinch. Reading non-entertainment content (such as self help and textbooks) is more approachable too. I no longer feel overwhelmed by the sheer thickness of the book, or the length of the chapters. I can just take tiny bites, one at a time. Separate to how this device changes the reading experience, I really appreciate the fact that this device is "hackable". Unlike a device that rhymes with "jamazon bindle", XTEINK allows the community to develop custom software/firmware for the device. If you buy this item, I'd highly recommend looking for "Crosspoint Reader" on github. It really makes the device awesome to use. With all that said, here are the pros and cons of this device as I have experienced them: Pros: - Extremely portable (can even magnetically attach to some larger phones) - No subscriptions, No ads - "Hackable" - Bring your own ePub books - No touchscreen; physical buttons (gone are the days of accidentally swiping) - USB-C Port (no neeed for a new cable) - Expandable storage via micro-sd card. (You are not locked in to paying for an entirely new device if you run out of storage. - Tiny size makes tackling books feel easy. - Comes with a microsd card AND a microsd to USB-A adapter - Comes with a basic screen protector (Its glossy, so I opted to not use it) - Lanyard/wrist strap hole, if you think you need it. (Does not come with a lanyard). - Buttons are reprogrammable (to an extent) Cons: - Tiny size. If you are an avid reader, you might enjoy being able to read more words at once. - Limited accessory ecosystem. There are very few options for cases, screen protectors, and folios out there. (Check the official XTEINK website, since they have some items not listed on amazon.) - Included instructions are unclear. (You might need to look up some tutorials) - Does not include a USB-C cable. (But you probably already have one.. hopefully). - It can be unclear what the buttons do. (You'll learn very quickly, but it isnt obvious). ... show more

  • Surprisingly great little pocket reader
Color: Gray
I bought this mostly as a curiosity, but I’ve ended up liking it more than expected. The size is the big win: it fits neatly on the back of my phone, so it’s easy to keep with me without carrying a full-size e-reader around. For quick reading breaks, travel, or just having a book available without pulling out another big device, it’s genuinely convenient. The screen is also very crisp. Text looks sharp and easy to read, and the e-paper display gives it that nice low-distraction feel compared with reading on a phone screen. The physical page-turn buttons work well and are easy enough to get used to. My only real wish is that it had a touchscreen. That would make navigation feel a little more natural, especially when browsing books and system menus. That said, the controls are simple enough that it’s not a dealbreaker. Overall, this is a neat little e-reader if you want something extremely portable, distraction-free, and easy to keep with you. It’s not trying to replace a larger Kindle-style reader, but for what it is, it works really well. ... show more

  • Easy On the Go Reading Easy On the Go Reading
Color: Black
This is an awesome piece of hardware. It's extremely pocketable, lightweight, and has a laser focused purpose. I prefer e-ink displays for reading, so my phone is a no go. I bring the X4 with me everywhere, and because of that, I can get reading in when I'm out and about. The battery life is also insanely good. There are two big negatives about the X4. The first is that there is no backlight. You will need to supply your own illumination, which is probably the biggest factor of why the battery life is so good. The second issue is twofold. The X4 not in any ecosystem like Kindle. You need to load your own books onto it, and the software solution that it comes with isn't great. There is a big community of people that love this thing and there is a fan made OS called Crosspoint that is much better that I've been exclusively using. I'm tech savvy, so that last point isn't a big issue for me, but be aware that you may need to tinker for a bit to get it up and running. Once it's set up, however, it's fantastic. ... show more
