  • Great knives
Wusthof knives are really great knives. I've had my basic set for almost 20 years and still use them daily. I grabbed this set because I used to have an inexpensive chopping knife like the big one that I got in Chinatown in San Francisco. Great knife but rusted. Now I have the same shape but a much better quality. It has a great weight and is really nicely balanced. It is also very sharp. It made me realize I need to sharpen my older knives again. The two other knives are smaller versions of knives that are already in my set. However I like the smaller sizes, especially the middle sized one with the wavy areas. It doesn't get stuck on food like potatoes that normally stick to the knife when chopping. The smaller sizes are easier to use without being too small. Just overall a great set of knives. Only negative is if you buy this as a gift, the chopper knife is nicely packaged in its own little box. The other two come with cardboard sleeves in a plastic bag. See picture. It doesn't seem to be an actual "set" but a selection of knives in a larger box. No big deal really, other than if it is a gift. ... show more

  • Three Knives to Rule them All
In my younger years, not much thought was spared towards kitchen utensils such as knives. I simply bought whatever was on sale or was reasonably-priced from the big box stores. These knives were apt to break at the handle sometimes, were dull and often needed sharpening which I never did, and some even rusted in spots. But I have always had a fascination with knives, and I am a collector of pocket knives. As I grew older, and could afford more expensive knives, my knowledge became broader. My most precious acquisition - before now - was a knife set made of Damascus steel. This Wusthof Classic 3-Piece Asian Knife Set is in a class of its own. I have never owned any Asian-style knives, and hence I am reviewing this from the perspective of a new entrant in that arena. Each knife sets its own distinct style, and but for the handles which are identical, might not have even appeared to be in the same set. The largest of them is in the style of a chef’s knife, but most unusually, it is squared off and has no point at the top. It is delightfully and deliberately top heavy. The other two knives are much smaller, and quite close in size. The larger one, described as a “5” Hollow-Edge Santoku” is a first for me. It has rounded divots close to the edge. It has proved to excellent at dicing vegetables and the oval divots seem to prevent food from clinging to the blade. The third and last is closer to a conventional knife, though wider at the stem than the norm. This knife seems to be more of a jack of all trades; in the pictures I show how cleanly it sliced through steak. There was no sawing motion necessary. Just one smooth, downward pressure, and the steak was sliced open cleanly. There are no drag marks at each end of the steak; the sliced edges are smooth as butter. Each knife is made of “high carbon stainless steel,” which from research is imbued with bonded strength, long-lasting edge retention and rust resistance. Other stainless steel are softer. Each of these knives cannot be snapped in two; they are that tough. Each knife is a full tang; the steel flows all the way through the handle. The pitchfork symbol, which is the Wusthof icon is etched in standout red on each handle. The handles are a dark brown and look like wood, but feel far more durable. Wusthof indicates that they are made of polyoxymethylene which from research is described as a “high-performance engineering thermoplastic.” It is when these knives are deployed in the kitchen that the craftsmanship and superior materials come into play. They cut through food with a smoothness that cheaper blades could never aspire to. Moreover, this set of three is self-sufficient; I cannot think of any kitchen task requiring a knife that this set could not accomplish. This knife set would make an excellent gift, or even an heirloom to be passed down to kin. For this reason, the lack of a case for these beauties seems quite the omission. ... show more

  • Professional-Level Knives That Actually Feel Worth the Money
As a full-time coffee shop owner, I’m around prep work constantly, and these instantly felt like a major step above the typical “premium” knife sets. The balance, edge retention, and overall control are incredible. The Santoku especially glides through vegetables, fruit, and proteins with almost no resistance. These are not lightweight department store knives pretending to be high-end — you can feel the craftsmanship immediately. Razor sharp out of the box, comfortable in hand for long prep sessions, and they hold an edge extremely well if cared for properly. The Asian utility knife ended up surprising me the most. It’s become the one I reach for constantly during fast-paced kitchen prep because of how precise and nimble it feels. Expensive? Yes. But after using them, I completely understand why chefs stay loyal to WÜSTHOF for decades. ... show more

  • Made in Solingen translates to “ the knives to own’..
Wustof classic knives remain some of the best knives ever made. They will last a lifetime with proper care. This trio offers a 4” paring knife, a mini Santoku knife, and a large very capable cleaver style knife for chopping large quantities of meat, vegetables, and more. German made and heirloom quality knives to cover all the basics. This trip would make a great gift for the person who loves to cook and cares about using the best quality tools. ... show more
