  • Somewhat of a letdown...
Style: PlayStation 4
So I really don't want to write a bad review for the WRX series; however, there are audio and graphical issues in this game. I LOVE Kenya & Japan! But, I've had issues with audio in Monte Carlo (only)? And, there have been serious hiccups in frame rates. I'm playing on a regular PS4 (not Pro) and I know a LOT of next gen console games have been having issues (Cyberpunk 2077, YIKES!). I guess my big complaint is that I don't currently have internet on my PS4 due to pandemic cutbacks and even if there is a patch, I'm left with the day one disc as is for now! I've bought every WRC since PS2 and while this is still an upgrade from WRC 8 (I do miss Corsica though), this is the first time I've experienced technical issues with a WRC game. It's not a buyer beware review if you don't have internet like me; but, there are issues, unfortunately, for a beautiful rally game on PS4. ... show more

  • Awesome game, very hard.
Style: PlayStation 5
I really like the game. I use a true force steering wheel system with a 81' tv and game is so realistic it's stressful. The gravel roads literally make my hands numbed after a while. Not a game for beginners or folks who don't want to hit the brake. When or if i actually get good enough to compete, it will really be fun. ... show more

  • No Real Improvements
Style: PlayStation 4
I enjoyed WRC8 a good deal, so I was happy to pick up this new version of the game at a half-price sale over the holidays. All I can say is: I'm sure glad I didn't pay full price! The unfortunate truth is that the developer doesn't seem to have fixed any of the flaws of WRC8. The good news is there are at least two new countries to race in here: Kenya and Japan. But the bad news is the handling, using Dual Shock controllers, seems to have gotten worse. It's really a handful to try to keep your car on a narrow road at high speed. The problem is horrendous oversteer. I added a little more dead zone, but that didn't help much. The sensitivity was already set at the lowest setting (-5), but having nothing to lose, I decided to try something completely counterintuitive and turned the sensitivity up to the medium setting (0). To my amazement, the handling got better. I wasn't running off the road as much or crashing into roadside hazards, which the game provides in large quantity. So if you don't have a steering wheel and are having trouble with the cars' handling -- try different steering sensitivity settings. The game has replaced the perks of the previous version with a better upgrade system, enabling you to exchange experience points for better performance, rewards, etc. I was hoping the handling would improve as I beefed up my car's mechanics, but no such luck. Then there are the game's wonky physics. If you slip off-road and hit an unbreakable obstacle, your car will flip up in the air and spin seemingly weightlessly like a bouncy castle that has come loose from its moorings. Ugh! I have also encountered a sound bug: sometimes the engine sound cuts out completely, making it harder to judge your car's speed. The engine sound does return after a few minutes, but it's annoying in a game that has already been patched at least once and probably more. Finally, there is the atrocious scoring system. Regardless of how well I drive, I almost ALWAYS come in ninth on the Historic races. Similarly, I often come in first in the short rally race segments but never in the longer segments. And I always score poorly on some courses in the main career mode and well on certain others: terrible scores in Monte Carlo, for example, and top scores in Sweden. Despite these problems, I still enjoy this game -- I love rally racing games -- but competitive players will find it very frustrating. I sincerely hope that the developer will fix these flaws in WRC10. THAT might merit paying full price... PROS: * Two new countries to race in. * Weather, time-of-day effects. * Better upgrade system. CONS: * Tricky handling using Dual Shock controllers. * Wonky physics. * Broken scoring system. * Engine sound bug. ... show more

  • Free PS5 Upgrade
Style: PlayStation 4
I bought the PS4 version on sale for $12.99. When I played on my PS5, I noticed a free upgrade was available for the PS5 version of the game. Bottom line, if you own a PS5, buy the cheaper PS4 version and upgrade for free.

  • Simply Horrible
Style: Nintendo Switch
WRC 9 is a pure racing simulator and WOW is it twitchy. The moment I started racing, the car was continuously a half second away from fishtailing and spinning out. The tiniest little error and the car would start wobbling and shaking and it was nearly impossible to straighten out unless I slow the car down significantly. What’s even more fun is that the tracks are so narrow that the margin of error is practically nil so prepare to spend a lot of time off the track and/or spinning out. The secret for me is to drive REALLY slow. I end up dead last, but I still put-up better times then when I drive the least bit aggressively. Put your blinkers on because in this racing game, it’s time to drive like granny. I made three changes in the game to help me out. I turned on the traction control, I set the difficulty to easiest, and I changed the accelerator from ZL to right stick forward. It’s always a problem in driving games on the Switch (and previous Nintendo games) because the shoulder buttons are digital, and a gas pedal would technically be analog. The right stick forward acts as a far more realistic gas pedal and actually feels more comfortable than the ZL button. Did all these changes pull me out of last place? Nope. I did better but was still way behind the second to last place driver. So, the question is, is this just an exceptionally challenging racer or is it a lousy port with broken mechanics. I’ve never driven in a real rally race, but I’m going to assume it isn’t like controlling an elephant on roller skates. If this is intended to be a realistic racer, I would have to say it fails miserably because the cars drive as if they have zero grip to the road. My time is WAY behind any other racer gaining me a loss of reputation and morale (stats in the game). After a short period of time, my morale was buried at the minimum so at least I didn’t have to watch it go down anymore. It is a negative fun factor. I’ve been playing racing games since Pole Position, so I have decades of experience and I’ve never played such a controller smashingly impossible racing game. I’d also say that I’ve put enough time into the game that if I haven’t moved out of last place at this point, I probably never will. The game gets hit a lot for the graphics, but I didn’t think they were that bad. I do like racers where you not only move horizontally around a track but also vertically up a mountain and we have those kinds of races here. There is quite a bit of detail, and I don’t recall any pop up issues. The rough, desert tracks look pretty cool, but they are so damn narrow. Again, the car is such a bear to control that it is practically impossible to stay on the track and when you have rocks and slopes all around, a wreck feels inevitable. Just a teensy bit towards the edge of the track and your car will hit a rock and flip or slide off the edge. WRC 9 has a 64 on Metacritic with a 4.8 User Score but this is on just a small number of reviews. I’ve seen low scores on other driving games including Snowrunner, which had a 75 and was one of the greatest driving games I have ever played. Gear.Club 2 received very similar scores to WRC 9, but I found the game entirely playable and quite a bit of fun. As one user wrote on Metacritic about WRC 9, the game is basically unplayable. There are nearly 800 reviews for the game on Amazon but almost all are for the Playstation which might be playable. Only two written reviews are for the Switch and of those only one put in some actual effort. This review gave the game 1 star and basically mirrored my own experience saying that the game is nigh on unplayable. This is the worst game I’ve played on the Switch, and it’s a shame because it’s clear a lot of work went into it. It could have been an enjoyable racing game, but the gameplay absolutely botched. I would battle it out for first place in Gear.Club 2. I 100 percented many of the regions in the extremely challenging Snowrunner but I don’t believe I’ll ever complete a rally in WRC 9 where I don’t come in last place. It’s literally that impossible to play. The 64 Metacritic score is WAY too high. One reviewer gave it an 80 and claimed it was a near perfect racer. Unless this guy is freakishly talented at video games, I think he’s out of his mind. Avoid this game like the plague. ... show more

  • Who needs gas???
Style: PlayStation 4
This is the first rally racing sim I have played and I enjoy it! Career mode is a lot of fun and it feels very rewarding to work your way into the WRC while managing the car, sponsorships, and crew. I played it with the controller until I was able to upgrade to a racing wheel and it made the gameplay that much more challenging and enjoyable. If you have the itch to drive and don’t want to pay $3.30/gallon (CA prices) then this game will do the trick. ... show more
