  • This Steady Rest Is Solid but Comes with Installation Challenges
Style: Yellow
The JAZORR L Shape Woodworking Steady Rest is undeniably robust, constructed from heavy-gauge steel components with solid welding. The durability of this steady rest is apparent in its build quality, which includes sturdy hardware handles. However, it's important to note that installation can be somewhat cumbersome. The width of the clamping plate makes it tricky to slide onto the lathe bed tracks directly from above, requiring it to be unthreaded, positioned from beneath the tracks, and then rethreaded from above. While the steady rest exhibits impressive strength, a couple of drawbacks were evident during use. Firstly, the tightening mechanism for securing the plate to the base leaves room for improvement. It relies on a threaded bolt, a nut, and a washer, and this configuration doesn't function as smoothly as desired. Additionally, the rollers' bearings displayed stiffness, which was unexpected as smoother rotation would have been preferred for optimal performance. ... show more

  • Stabilizes spindles as small as 1/4 inch
Style: Yellow
I ordered this steady rest to replace one of a similar design that had metal wheels. This unit is much better than the last one due to the non-marring wheels, increased flexibility in securing the rest to the lathe bed and lock down arms on the adjustment nuts. The wheels can be adjusted to hold a spindle as small is 1/4 inch. You need to plan ahead during the tool setup to position the lock arms so they don't interfere with your turning. Overall this steady rest works well but takes a little extra planning. ... show more

  • Pretty good steady rest...
Style: Yellow
Was packed well with plenty of bubble wrap to protect it. Was in perfect condition. It is well made with heavy duty, thick metal. Comes completely assembled. Just mount it to your lathe bed and it's ready to use. It has, what I think about too large levers. Guess it's nice to have longer lever handles to get more torque, they just tend to get in the way. They do pull out so you can move them freely, just a little work to adjust. Once set up and adjusted to the piece I've been messing with, it does hold it steady. You do need to hold the top arm down because it raises up when you tighten it up. Once snug, the wheel roll nice and easy. I personally wish it had bigger wheels, they are pretty small, but still works. I'll see how it work with more time. Overall it is pretty well built No instructions, not even a thank you note in the box, so makes you wonder if they really care about their customers. Reason for one star off. One odd thing, there is a bunch sheets of heavy duty, waterproof sandpaper, I think it's 100 grit in the box. Guess it's a nice addition, but strange if you ask me. Weird? I do like it, not perfect, but would recommend. ... show more

  • Not for large pieces.
Style: Yellow
I got this steady rest for turning spindles on my Rikon 70-1218VS wood lathe. It is made of cast iron with stainless steel fasteners and seems very heavy and solid for its compact size. The mounting plate runner that attaches the steady rest to the lathe bed is not designed specifically for my particular lathe, so I found positioning it where I wanted it on the bed to be a challenge. But once it was in the desired place, the rollers were surprisingly easy to position in support of the workpiece. The rollers do not spin freely as you would expect from a more expensive, steady rest, but a bit of lube and use will remedy that. The arms that hold the rollers have very limited adjustability, so that the rest won’t handle large work pieces. I have not had this very long, so I can’t say how it will hold up over time. In sum, this steady rest seems hardy but with limited adjustability. It is best for smaller work pieces. If you are turning spindles or small cups on a budget, it might do the trick. ... show more

  • Cool rest
Style: Yellow
This rest is lightweight but sturdy. Wheels are nice and smooth but not loose. Holds my piece in place securely. My only complaint with this rest is the handles for adjustment get in the way of each other making it kinda of a pain tightening it down.

  • Quality build, lousy design.
Style: Yellow
This lathe rest is well built with quality components. Unfortunately that is where it ends. Others might have better luck with this than me. I'm using it on a HF lathe, and mostly turning 1" (25mm) blocks (like pen blanks). I make knobs for the electric guitars I build. I thought the lathe rest would help hold things while they are spinning. -I put a square blank in the lathe to see just where it sat. First, the plate that is under the rails screws onto the bolt used to tighten and loosen the plate to move the rest. The handle is too long and it hits the vertical post in the back. Yes, I know you can lift up the handle and move it back without unscrewing, but when you are installing the plate the bolt is loose and when you pull it up, it comes free of the plate. The main plate sits across the beams like the tool rest does. It ends up blocking the tool rest so that you can't move it down the rail. Working with rather short pieces, the wheels, nice wheels by the way, get in the way of the tool rest and will not let it get close enough to the blank. This rest hinders more than it helps. I can see how it might help while turning a long spindle, but you would have to move it when the tool rest got close. Great quality, but the design doesn't work well. ... show more
