I'm not a pro wood carver but a pro carpenter. I wanted to get a set to dabble in carving and I think it works out really well for a first set. The mallet and handles of the chisels are not the most comfortable and the steel seems to dull quicker than I'd expect on harder woods like oak or hard maple but worked fine for soft maple poplar and pine. You get a nice array of shapes and sizes and I have enjoyed using them overall.

Well made chisels with comfortable handles. Very sharp right out of the box. Nice curls coming of the wood on the chisels I've used so far. Each cutting edge is protected by a rubber guard. Nice canvas roller for storage. Includes a nice hammer included but not needed for most chisel work.

The materials are excellent, so the tools are extremely sharp and sturdy. They come is a convenient carrying case, and you get a really good selection of implements. My skill level is novice/intermediate, and I was looking to upgrade my beginner tools, so this is the perfect kit for me. Definitely gift worthy.

This is a nice set of carving tools--note I say nice, not good, certainly not great, but nice. They will be especially nice for beginners who will later supplement their set with high quality tools in the size and shapes they use most. It is also a nice set of tools for those with higher quality, but smaller set of tools. This way you can have on hand lesser used shapes on hand to supplement your harder working tools. A casual look finds these tools to be impressive. They are well polished, sharper than most edges purchased off the shelf, and have attractive light colored wooden handles. A much closer look reveals edges that still need honing for delicate work, and grinds that are often center and therefore asymmetrical. One has no idea how deep the tang without talking the blades out, but a magnet suggests the tank is not all that long. There is no true ferrule, just a "bump stop" where the blade stops when the tang has fully entered the wood. This makes a weak interface with the wood, compared to a socketed chisel, of a handle with a metal ferrule. End result, they handles are going to eventually split. The handles are covered with what looks to be a polyurethane finish. Nice for keeping them clean, not so nice for extended use in the hand. I'm sure that some will soon sand off the finish to allow a smoother, more absorbent grip. I could go on (we haven't even gotten to edge retention), but you already have the idea. Nice tools for occasional use, but not the rival of, or replacement for the great tools that come from well established european brands.

I planned to retire in a few months and do a lot of extended camping. I wanted to learn wood carving when I had time instead of sitting bored in the woods. I think I should have ordered a small beginner’s set to learn with though. This set is truly beautiful and high quality and I am overwhelmed by it. It has no instructions, of course. I have been saving various YouTube videos on carving technique and am looking forward to trying them. Unfortunately, I had to return to work full-time for another year and don’t have time right now to pursue this interest. I do still intend to and will write an update once I have had a chance to really work with these tools. The set is exactly as pictured in the listing and would be a fabulous gift for a skilled wood worker! The price seems very fair compared to the cost of basic beginner’s tools. I have very small female hands (wear a small in adult gloves). These tools are not heavy or awkward for me at all, but they do have sufficient weight to perform well.

The small mallet cracked in the first day of use. I taped it up and have been using these for three weeks. Today on of the chisels snapped. Quality is not where it should be for the price. Buyer beware.
