  • Effective Tool for Carving or Rough Shaping Wood
Style: 4-1/2'' x 7/8'' Arbor
This review is for Wood Carving Disc 4.5 Inch,Wood Stump Grinder,Angle Grinding Wheel with 7/8”Arbor for Wood Carving, Shaping, Working,Tree Stump Remover This is a standard form factor 4.5" wheel with a 7/8 center bore. It has a very rough surface that wraps around the edge. I mounted this on a pneumatic angle grinder. Because the center bore has a thinner cross section than most wheels I use, I had to flip the arbor mandrels to tightly grip the wheel. Be very sure the wheel is centered and tightly retained by the mandrels, because this wheel has some significant rotating mass. I used the wheel of a block of Douglas Fir and was able to grind away large amounts of wood quickly. This wheel make a lot of sawdust in a short time. I then tried some intricate shaping of the surface and found it to be very controllable by modulating the air valve on the grinder. It was actually kind of fun to make some patterns in the wood block. While you won't get any fine detail because of the wheels aggressive surface, you can still get remarkable results with a little practice. I did not feel that the wheel was uncontrollable at any time and never needed to touch the side handle of the grinder. A few notes: Do not grind anything but wood. Any contact with metal or stone will quickly damage the grinding surface. Very wet wood may not grind well as the wood fibers are quite stringy and do not come off cleanly. A variable speed grinder will make using this much easier and more controllable. If you are going to use this on a stump, dig out around the stump to get clearance for the grinding operation, then wash off the stump and let it dry before grinding. Keeping the soil off the wood being ground will improve the life of the tool. Overall, this is a very handy grinding wheel for wood and can achieve some remarkable results. I will be using it for rough shaping and also for cleaning up a couple of stumps on the property. ... show more

  • A new fun time to add to my creativity
Style: 4-1/2'' x 7/8'' Arbor
I recently acquired the Wood Carving Disc, and it has exceeded all my expectations! From the moment I used it, I was impressed with how effortlessly it cuts through wood. The sharpness of the disc makes detailed carving a breeze, allowing me to shape and refine with precision. The durability of the disc is outstanding; even after multiple projects, it still performs like new. It's also incredibly versatile, handling everything from rough shaping to finer detailing with ease. The design makes it easy to attach and detach from my angle grinder, saving me valuable time. One of the things I appreciate most is the control it offers. Despite its power, it doesn’t feel too aggressive, making it ideal for both beginners and experienced carvers. This tool has truly enhanced my woodworking projects, and I can’t recommend it enough! ... show more

  • Hold on tight and make small cuts
Style: 4-1/2'' x 7/8'' Arbor
I'm putting stairs on a deck and I needed to cut a notch in a railroad tie. I thought all I needed was half an inch to an inch but it ended up being 3 inches deep, about 4 inches long and 2 inches wide. The nice thing with this disc is that I could enlarge the cut very easily. Be careful of snags, if the blade bites into something tough it will try to rip the grinder out of your hands. Also be aware of chips, not quite sand blasting when they come your way but close and if they get in your eyes it will take awhile to get them out. The finished cut was clean and smooth and even though I hit the dirt a couple of times the blade didn't get jammed up, it just kept on cutting. I can see this for wood carving, with the right technique it would leave a nice pattern or it could easily be sanded smooth. (I can see it, I couldn't do it, but someone with artistic ability could go to town with this.) They advertise stump grinding but for any stump you can't pull out by hand it would take days to grind it out. ... show more

  • Rips through wood with little effort. Great for rough-shaping wood.
Style: 4-1/2'' x 7/8'' Arbor
I was a bit surprised the first time I used this medieval looking device with my angle grinder. With very little effort, it removed sharp edges off the lumber I was working with, and it did so without snagging, or otherwise misbehaving. With varying power setting on my angle grinder, it turns solid wood into dust, and to coin an overused phrase - like a knife through butter. I'm not sure I would use this grinding wheel for removing a stump unless it was a sapling, but it does aggressively, yet at the same time, controllably, make short work of wood. The current price of about 13 bucks seems about right for this wood carving disk, and it's made well for what it is. ... show more

  • Passed the test
Style: 4-1/2'' x 7/8'' Arbor
I am getting into wood sculpting so I figured I would give this carving wheel a try. It works pretty good so far. I've only carved soft wood but plan to try it on some hardwood soon. It worked well on the soft wood. It works fast and aggressively so be sure to approach your wood at a slower pace and take lighter cuts. The teeth will clog over time, but a pass with a torch or a wire brush clears it quickly. For the price it's hard to beat. ... show more

This thing really chews up the wood. Perfect for carving projects where you need to remove a lot of material.
